Sardis - John Harrison wins it all …….. In my years of tournament fishing I’ve discovered one simple fact, the weather will not cooperate with tournament fishing events. That was the case for MCC on Friday and Saturday. We left Jackson Fri- day morning with a temperature of 43 deg. no wind and arrived at Batesville around 6AM to a cold 25 deg. with 20mph winds out of the north. That’s COLD my friends, too cold to fish. I didn't see a boat on the water until around 10am. John Harrison was the first boat I saw Friday morning. Seems he found his ‘nest’ early that morning, caught two 16” slabs and moved on. I learned a valuable lesson, ‘watch John Harrison, see him fishing a spot and you automatically need to hit a way-point”. I know, that’s not ethical but.. John’s a great guy, you can’t find a better person, he don’t care how many boats crowd him, he’s gonna catch fish regardless. I really think he’s kin to a crappie. My interview with John revealed several things. He caught his fish fishing only 3’ deep, he used 16’ BGJP poles. He wanted his bait as far away from the boat as possible. He also turned off all his electronics, no need for a depth-finder, hit the trolling motor as little as possible. No noise, shallow fish are spooky enough, no need in letting them know you’re there. That’s a genius move. However, there are issues using the extra- long poles fishing solo. The fish are hard to land without a net-man. John endured, he says he lost at least two fish larger than the 2.95 due to not having a net-man. John has another quality that’s hard to find, humility. John doesn’t have an arrogant bone in his body. That’s more than I can say for some of my buddies. Ain't calling no names y’all know who you are. Winning doesn’t affect John in any way, all he says is ‘hey buddy, I just got lucky today’. All I can say is when John’s fishing one of his lakes, we’re fishing for 2nd place. That’s ok, I’ll take 2nd place any day. The Lord blessed you with a remarkable talent. Continued……... On another note, MCC now has members in 9 states, that’s right, nine states. We had a team join us from Decatur, IL. That’s an 8 hour drive any way you look at it. Rick Barnes and Bryan Cleland drove down again to fish the MCC Sardis event. Both had fished the Big Mama Open last fall and loved it. Rick and Bryan are great guys and good fisherman. I think the big slabs got em hooked. We also had Jackie Corman from Nicholasville, KY and Don Beasley from Lancaster, KY join us. They live almost 9 hours away. Now when I hear our members complain about driving around 3 hours, I say so what. Jackie and Don live with hollowing distance from Kentucky Lake, what is it about the MS Lakes that makes guys drive a day just to fish here? I know, the fish. Last but not least, we had Neil Hillard from Coal Creek, CO team up with Grenada guide Vick Finkley and fish the Sardis tournament. Neil says the drive from home is around 1,200 mile, that’s 21 hours pulling a boat. Wow, ain't no way I could do that. Neil, when those boys from out west hear about how you’re catching em’ slabs, I’m sure more of them will migrate this way. I met another young man Saturday, 12-year-old Beau Nichols from Star, MS. Beau is the right-guard for McLaurin Jr. High Tigers. He joined his dad Jake and Uncle Chris Criswell. I love seeing the boys and girls brave the cold and rain to fish. Teach them to fish and feed them for a life time. Beau is a good kid, yes sir and no sir is how he speaks. You can tell when a kid has that discipline, it shows in everything they do. Who knows, we may see Beau playing on Sundays one of these days. I must commend the MCC bunch, we’re on the down side of the tournament season. We’re headed to some big-fish lakes from now on out. The pre-spawn is just around the corner, and the weather will get better, hopefully. The fishing is going to get better, the fish are going to get bigger. If you’ve never experienced the thrill of walking on stage with a big bucket of slabs, getting your name called and seeing your name on that big electronic scoreboard in 1st place. You don't know what you’re missing. It’s addicting, nothing you can do can compare to that feeling. I know we’re an amateur club of weekend guys and gals that love the sport of crappie fishing. I saw something Saturday morning that struck home. Chris and Jake were having boat trouble, Mr. Charles Lindsay and Charles Jr., would not leave the landing until Chris and Jake got their boat started. Don and I did what we could to help, but Charles Jr., got the engine cranked, diagnosed the problem and away they went. Now that my friends is what MCC is all about. None of us make a living tournament fishing. We’re doing it for fun. When we can help each other we stop the presses. On the way home Don and I pulled over to relieve ourselves and 3 or 4 trucks stopped to see if we were having trouble. Now I’ve seen so-called ‘Church Folk’ keep going. So what does that tell you. Naw, you make the decision. Lake Washington is next, Last year our biggest fish came out of here. Don’t miss the action, should be off the chain. We’re planning a Friday-Nite get-to-gather like no other, buffet style all you can eat. Pre-spawn is on at Sardis!!

Another rough, cold and windy weather condition hit us at Sardis! And while everyone didn’t smack em including my partner and I there were a lot of good fish caught. Especially by our first place winner Big John Harrison with 16.29 lbs of Sardis Slabs!! MCC is really lucky to have a member like John fishing in the club. I mean he may kick our tails pretty often but we always learn some-thing from him!! Congratulations John on another MCC victory!! And way to go Carl Painter and Chaney Starnes with 13.24 lbs and second place!! Hope you fish some more with us Carl. And coming in third place was Johnny Walker and his guest Austin Byrd with 13.15 lbs.!! Great job guys especially for your first tournament Austin!! We hope you can make some more with us Austin.

Next up is beautiful Lake Washington!! We all remember the weather conditions there last year! Hey our last 2 tournaments have been pretty tough so maybe were due a fair weather day!! Rest assured there will be some heavy weights at this one as we will be in pre-spawn and possible early spawning if we have some warm weather!! Sardis was one of those tournaments that you know is coming, just don't know when. The weather both days was either super cold or super wet and cold. The crappie didn't care, they’re already wet. We tried everything in our arsenal to catch the big ones except minnows. Brad & I like to use artificial baits, It just don't seem like fishing using minnows. I know, its do or die with lures. We still prefer to try and trick them with our favorite Bobby Garland lures. Sometimes it just don't work. We get beat and beat bad. Saturday was one of those days. We just couldn't trick them on that day, but rest assured our day is coming.

Brad and I had an emergency at home, a flooded house. No way around it, we had to go, My wife is recovering from an auto accident a few months ago and she’s not able to handle things like that. I want to thank eve-ryone for chipping in and working the weigh-in. Let us know if you have any complaints, suggestions, or anything that will help us improve the process. We’re always open to suggestions. I’ve truly enjoyed being the weigh-master, it’s great when you have a great group to work with. Thanks Again. Bo Hudson

Who says Sardis doesn’t produce big fish?

When the first team weighed in Saturday and they went over 12 lbs, we all went “uh ohhhhhh”. After that, the enormous weights just kept on coming until it was our turn. Some days you’re the windshield but today we were the bug. The weather was fantastic, horrible, and then fantastic again, all within six hours. Just amazing! Larry and I pre-fished the general area John Harrison fished on Saturday, but he was all the way across the lake keeping his eyeball on us. Not that it would have mattered, he can catch fish in your bathtub in your home anytime he gets ready!

What a great weight for the day! John told me he only had 11lbs at 9:30 and was com-pletely satisfied with the weight for the day, but he started picking up huge fish every now and then after that. Glad to have you back in the fold John, and look forward to seeing you and Kent down my way next month.

Now for the good news next month is setting up to be huge! The water level is topped out and the spawning area has doubled to the fish this spring. That’s fantastic news for the future generations of crappie and crappie fishermen.

Due to the fact that we will impact the lake at prime spawn time, we are going to have some kind of live tank to get the huge females back in the lake as soon and healthy as we

can. I’m not asking you to return all of your fish to the lake, but would ask that you allow us to put back the females ready to spawn. We may even have a cooler full of males and might trade you two for one for your females full of eggs. We are set to catch a huge number of fish and we encourage everyone to release the females and keep the males for the freezer. You might think this is silly but one mature female can mean thousands of fry for the lake. I’m not telling you what to do, I’m asking for your help in this endeavor.

We have a buffet and early registration set for 6:00 March 1 at Roy’s Store. Pam will be open the next morning for breakfast and registration Saturday, March 2. I’m excited and let’s hope the weather is fair. If so, this could be a record setting tournament!

Stay safe and see you there,

More to come…………..

Wildcat Trolling By Bernard Williams, Magnolia Crappie Club

I love to troll; I think any other type of fishing is boring unless you are tearing them up. I started pulling crankbaits and long lining jigs a few years ago and found this to be a very effective way to catch fish. This method works best when water temperature is above 50 degrees.

The method works will with any type of trolling, from spider-rigging, long lining jigs to pulling crankbaits. The expert trollers will never tell this so listen closely. My method in-volves making large looping turns that crisscross each other. What happens when you make turns is the outside baits pick up and the inside baits fall and vise-versa.

Since crappie are predator fish, they will attack anything that tries to get away or looks crippled. It’s the same principle as a bully uses, if you run you get beat up. It’s the same concept with crappie. When they see that jig or crankbait slow down or speed up their basic instinct is to attack. So there you have it, the turns are the key.

The wildcat method got its name from me looking back at the GPS route and seeing that I had made a bunch of turns, my partner said that looks wild, and there you have it. Foot-ball has its wildcat, why not crappie fishing. This works so well because you can do this on a river channel or a flat. The key to this method is to overlap your turns when working a certain area.

We use the wildcat very effective on the River Lakes, Bar-nett, Grenada, and Sardis, during the pre-spawn, spawn, sum-mer, and fall. We use this technique during the spawn for no other reason than to just fine the location of the big sows, and then spider-rig them.

Speed is another critical factor; sometimes we simply turn the trolling motor off for a few seconds and back on or speed up and slow back down. I’ll try anything to give that jig or crankbait an erratic move. This triggers what we call “Reaction Strikes”. The crappie might not be feeding but something coming alone and stop or speed up in front of them they can resist.

• Tip: I use a Minn-Kota trolling motor with the I-Pilot. While most fishermen use the re-mote, I use the foot control to control my speed. I have more control over the speed with the foot control than I do with the remote. Don’t get me wrong, I still attach the remote to my belt for times when I need it, but for my speed adjustments, I use the roller control on the foot control. It is truly variable control. I can go from 30% to 100% and back to 20% much faster with the roller than the remote.

This technique can be used with any method of trolling, from spider-rigging to long-lining to cranking. It can be utilized any season of the year. The key to making it produc-tive is to let the fish tell you the speed they prefer. BW

Sick & Shut-In Members MCC would like to wish James Hamlin, one of our members a speedy recovery. James started with a winter cold, and ended up in the hospital with double pneumonia. We hear that-James is recovering slowly. We all pray that he gets well soon. We need you back out there with us, but not too soon. We’ll keep you up to date on all things going on with MCC. Another one of our members, Robbie Nevin would like to thank everyone for all their pray-ers and calls during his illness. Robbie was able to fish with us at Sardis and is progressing well. Glad to see you back in the boat with David. Y’all did good. Mrs. Jane Rogers would like to thank all MCC members and friends for everything they did during her illness. From what her husband Rabbit says, she’s almost back to herself. Take it easy Ms Jane, let us know if Rabbit get’s on your nerves. He really means well. Just don't pay him any attention like we do. You done spoiled him I guess. Mrs. Amanda Tomasich wants all MCC members to know she really appreciated the calls and prayers during her illness. She is recovering well and should be back on the lake when the weather breaks. Please let us know when we have a Member or Sponsor that’s sick, we’ll get the word out. You were here for us, we will be in your corner when you need us. The MCC Members

MCC is forming a charitable corporation that will be a separate arm of MCC. This organization will have a 501-C3 Federal Charity Status. It will allow MCC to solicit full charitable donations from major companies and individuals. These monies WILL NOT be used for any MCC Tour-nament Payouts. The organization will have a sep-arate board of directors, made up of MCC mem-bers. We will use these funds for events like Wounded-Warriors, Take-A-Kid-Fishing, and Disaster Assistance Events. We need your help, we’re having a Naming Contest to give this organization its own identity. You have until March. 2, 2013 to submit your en-try. The name selection will be chosen by the MCC Board of Directors at the Sardis Tourna-ment. MCC is in the process of putting together a prize package that will include tackle, clothing and money.
