0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) wasadopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on12 October 1988, after the draft finalized by theFurniture Sectional Committee had beenapproved by the Civil Engineering DivisionCouncil.0.2 Wooden folding chair is an item of dailyhousehold use specially for outdoor areas, andalso during public and private functions wherelarge gatherings are to be catered for shortperiods.0.2.1 The popularity of this item of furniturefurther increases due to the fact that largequantities of such chairs can be stored andtransported with comparative ease.0.3 This standard was first published in 1972.In this revision, the tests for strength andstability of chair and also finished surface havebeen included. The revised standard alsomakes reference to the recent Indian Standardsfor various types of materials allowed in thestandard.0.4 This standard contains clause 3.3 whichcalls for agreement between the manufacturerand the purchaser and clause 2.5 whichpermits the purchaser to use his option forselection to suit his requirements.

0.5 A scheme of labelling environment friendlyproducts to be known as ECO Mark is beingintroduced at the instance of the Ministry ofEnvironment and Forests (MEF), Governmentof India. The ECO Mark shall be administeredby the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) underthe BIS Act, 1986 as per the Resolution No. 71dated 21 February 1991 published in theGazette of the Government of India. For aproduct to be eligible for ECO Mark, it shallalso carry the Standard Mark of the BIS,besides meeting additional optionalenvironment friendly requirements.0.6 This edition 2.2 incorporates AmendmentNo. 1 (September 1993) and Amendment No. 2(January 1997). Side bar indicates modificationof the text as the result of incorporation of theamendments.0.7 For the purpose of deciding whether aparticular requirement of this standard iscomplied with, the final value, observed orcalculated, expressing the result of a test, shallbe rounded off in accordance with IS : 2-1960*.The number of significant places retained inthe rounded off value should be the same asthat of the specified value in this standard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard covers the requirements formaterials, dimensions and manufacture andfinish of wooden folding chairs.

2. MATERIALS

2.1 Timber — Any species of timber specifiedin IS : 13622-1993 ‘Indian timber for furnituresand cabinets — Classification’ shall be used inthe manufacture of chairs.2.1.1 For ECO Mark, only species of timber asspecified in IS : 13622-1993 from sources otherthan natural forests such as timber fromindustrial and social forestry plantations,shade trees from tea and coffee estates, etc,shall be used for the manufacture of chairs.

2.2 Adhesives — Adhesives used for joinerywork shall conform to IS : 848-1974*,IS : 849-1957† and IS : 4835-1979‡.2.3 Wood Screws — Wood screws used forjoinery work shall be slotted countersunk headand shall conform to IS : 451-1972§.2.4 Plywood — Plywood used shall conform toIS : 303-1989 ‘Specification for plywood forgeneral purposes ( third revision )’.

2.4.1 For ECO Mark the plywood shall conformto the requirements specified in IS : 303-1989for ECO Mark purposes.2.5 Medium Density Fibreboards (MDF)

MDF used for the manufacture of folding chairsshall conform to IS : 12406-1988 ‘Specificationfor medium density fibreboard for generalpurposes’.For ECO Mark, the medium density fibreboardshall conform to the requirements specified inIS : 12406-1988 for ECO Mark purposes.2.6 Decorative Plastic Laminates — Decorative plastic laminates used for the surface of the seat or the back shall conform to IS : 2046-1969* and shall be of a design and finish as specified by the purchaser.

2.6.1 Rexin and PVC or other plastic clothrequired for the upholstery shall conform to therelevant Indian Standards. Where nospecification exists, it shall be approved by thepurchaser.

3. DIMENSIONS, TOLERANCES AND MANUFACTURE

3.1 The overall dimensions of wooden foldingchairs shall be as given in Fig. 1.3.2 The tolerances on dimensions of the chairand its components shall be as given below:

3.3 The design and constructional details maybe as mutually agreed to between themanufacturer and the purchaser.

4. FINISH

4.1 For finishing, the surface shall be waxed,french polished, varnished or painted. Themethod of application of finish shall conform toIS : 2338 (Part 1)-1967*. Clear lacquer paint,melamine resin based paints or polyurethanepaints, when used, shall be applied according tothe manufacturer’s instructions.

5 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ECO MARK

5.1 General Requirements

5.1.1 The product shall conform to therequirements of quality and performance asspecified in the standard.5.1.2 The manufacturer shall produce to BISenvironmental consent clearance from theconcerned State Pollution Control Board as perthe provisions of the Water ( Prevention andControl of Pollution ) Act, 1974 and Air( Prevention and Control of Pollution ) Act,1981 alongwith the authorization, if requiredunder the Environment ( Protection ) Act, 1986,while applying for ECO Mark.5.2 Specific Requirements

The product shall conform to the specificrequirements given for ECO Mark underrelevant clauses of this standard.

NOTE — The manufacturer shall provide documentaryevidence by way of certificate or declaration to thiseffect to the Bureau of Indian Standards while applyingfor ECO Mark.

6. TESTS AND SAMPLING

6.1 The physical tests, visual examination andscale of sampling shall be as specified inAppendix A.

7. MARKING7.1 All wooden folding chairs shall be markedwith a suitable mark identifying themanufacturer.7.1.1 The wooden folding chairs may also bemarked with the Standard Mark.

NOTE — The use of Standard Mark is governed by theprovisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act 1986and Rules and Regulations made thereunder. TheStandard Mark on products covered by an IndianStandard conveys the assurance that they have been

produced to comply with the requirements of thatstandard under a well defined system of inspection,testing and quality control which is devised andsupervised by BIS and operated by the producer.Standard marked products are also continuouslychecked by BIS for conformity to that standard as afurther safeguard. Details of conditions under which alicence for the use of the Standard Mark may be grantedto manufacturers or producers may be obtained fromthe Bureau of Indian Standards.

7.2 The criteria for which the product has beenlabelled as ECO Mark.

TESTS AND SAMPLING

A-1. PHYSICAL TESTSA-1.1 Joint and Surface SmoothnessTest — By passing fingers lightly up and downon various wooden parts, there shall be nofeeling of appreciable waviness or any fibrespricking into the fingers. No projection of anydowel pins or nails at the joints shall be felt bythe fingers. The joints shall be tight and wellmade.A-1.2 Humidity Variation TestA-1.2.1 The chair before being polished orpainted shall be placed in a moist enclosure forseven days at a temperature of 20°C andrelative humidity 85 percent. It will then beremoved to a dry enclosure for seven days at atemperature of 40°C and relative humidity 30percent.A-1.2.2 The test sample shall not showdistortions, loosening of materials/joints,oxidation and other defects.

A-2. STRENGTH AND STABILITY TESTSA-2.1 General — Design of wooden foldingchair shall be consistent with the accepteddesign and the same shall appear to besymmetrical with reference to its central axisand there shall be no sharp edges causinginconvenience in the normal handling and theuse of a chair.A-2.2 Strength Requirements — The foldingchairs when tested in accordance with IS : 5416(Part 1)-1988* at the appropriate leveldepending on usage of chairs shall show no signof defects.A-2.3 Stability Requirements — The foldingchairs when tested in accordance with IS : 5416(Part 2)-1988† at the appropriate leveldepending on its usage shall not show any signof defects.A-2.4 Resistance of the Surface to DryHeat — The finished surface of test samplesshall be tested for resistance to dry heat in

accordance with IS : 5807 (Part 1)-1975*. Theminimum qualifying average ratings shallconform to 7 of IS : 5807 (Part 1)-1975*.A-2.5 Resistance of the Surface to WetHeat — The finished surface of test sampleshall be tested for resistance to hot water asgiven in IS : 5807 (Part 2)-1975†. The minimumqualifying average ratings shall conform to 7 ofIS : 5807 (Part 2)-1975†.A-2.6 Resistance of Surface to Marking byLiquids — The finish surface of the testsample shall be tested for resistance to markingby liquids in accordance with IS : 5807 (Part4)-1975†. The minimum qualifying averagerating shall comform to 8 of IS : 5807 (Part4)-1975‡.A-2.7 Resistance of Surface to MechanicalDamage — The finish surface of test sampleshall be tested for impact, cross-cut and scrapetests in accordance with IS : 5807 (Part6)-1978§. The rating shall conform to 5.3 ofIS : 5807 (Part 6)-1978§.A-3. TEST SAMPLEA-3.1 The samples shall be drawn at randomfrom a lot in accordance with Table 1.
