66th Annual Conference

Keynote AddressDavid RocheDavid Roche is an inspirational humourist, keynote speaker and performer who has transformed the challenges and gifts of living with a facial difference into a compelling message that uplifts and delights audiences around the world.

“When I walk on stage, I encourage the audience to ask, 'What happened to your face?'I then explain that I was born with a severe facial difference. On the left side of my face isan extensive vascular malformation, a benign growth consisting of blood vessels. As an infant and child I underwent many facial surgeries and heavy radiation therapy, which left radiation burns on my temple and eyelid."

"Yet my face is a gift, because my shadow side – my difficulty and challenge – is on the outside, where I have been forced to deal with it."

- David Roche

Live Entertainment Jeff Poolton

Jeff came upon his love of singing at the age of seven, when he joined his mother at the piano and began to sing along with the songs she played. Since then, he trained for nearly 15 years, eventually achieving his grade 10 vocal certification through the Royal Conservatory of Music. Jeff has over 25 years of performance experience. Music has proven to be a great source of comfort and confidence, while facing the challenges of his life with cerebral palsy. These challenges, along with his desire to thank those that inspired him on his journey, led to the creation of his new pop album “Welcome to My World”. The collection of original songs is chronologically organized, as Jeff sings his way through the highlights of his life.

Now 37, Jeff is a passionate supporter of many organizations that assist people with disabilities. His hope is that through his music people will see the world a little differently.

The Keys to LifePart of the OFCP’s vision is to improve the quality of life for people who have cerebral palsy. With that aim in mind, this year’s conference focuses on four key themes that have a significant impact on our collective and individual experiences. Let's share how mental health and relationships enrich and complicate our lives; how representations of disability frame our collective identity and how government legislation impacts disability justice.

As always, the OFCP conference is ripe with opportunities to share and celebrate our successes as people with cerebral palsy. Check out the 2nd annual gallery of accomplishments, watch digital shorts about fellow members, celebrate at the awards banquet and dance, learn from your peers and come “home” to relax and unwind amongst friends. All are welcome to relish the Keys to Life.

Healthy MindsAbilityOnlinePresented by Sarah Evans and Michelle McClure

Healthy Minds is a youth led initiative which focuses on mental health and its impact on disability. The initiative seeks to empower people with disabilities with information, strategies for coping, role models and inspiration. Presenters Michelle McClure, Executive Director of AbilityOnline and Sarah Evans, Chair of the Healthy Minds Youth Advisory Committee, will guide the audience through the resources available at Ability Online.

This one hour presentation will include knowledge and skill acquisition opportunities as well as consultation from the audience on how the initiative can further develop. Sarah will share her personal experiences with the intent of starting candid discussion about mental health and disability.

Making the AODA work for youOntario Accessibility Standards Advisory CouncilPresented by John Hendry

John Hendry has been an elected public school trustee for more than twenty-seven years. During his term as a trustee he has also been a member of the Special Education Advisory Committee. John has been appointed to sit on the Accessibility Standards Council in the Province of Ontario. The Province will be the first jurisdiction in the world to legislate accessibility.

In 2005 the Province of Ontario enacted the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The act has received attention around the world and has been noted in the United Nations Newsletter on Disabilities. However, under the AODA, accessibility takes on the form of a “complaints-based system” whereby businesses are not required to be accessible unless there is a complaint made by an individual.

This presentation will use the concrete examples to unpack the impact of the AODA’s five accessibility standards on persons with disabilities such as cerebral palsy. It will include opportunities for the attendees to cite specific accessibility issues. Participants will gain a good understanding of the legislation and potential benefit to persons with disabilities. The presentation will conclude with opportunities for feedback and discussion.

Project Re•VisionPresented by Dr. Carla Rice, Eliza Chandler and Dr. Kirsty Liddiard

Project Re•Vision is a CIHR-funded project that puts on digital storytelling workshops around Ontario for folks who are interested in exploring issues around disability and healthcare provision with a desire to dismantle stereotypes. Digital stories made in Project Re•Vision’s workshops are about disabilities and differences. Viewers are asked to reflect on their responses to physical or mental difference.

This special presentation will explore how people with disabilities have been historically and contemporarily represented in dominant culture, emphasizing how such representations effect how we are treated. Storytellers from project Re•Vision often describe their work as providing a counter-narrative to dominant representations of disability and physical difference. We will conclude our presentation by sharing how you can become involved in our project.

Disability and RelationshipsThe Rose Centre for Young Adults with DisabilitiesPresented by Tim Rose and Natalie Sanborn

The Rose Centre for Young Adults with Disabilities is a Toronto based organization that recognizes the differences in social opportunities between young adults with disabilities and their peers. Our primary goal is to support young adults with disabilities in the areas of sexual expression, dating, and building healthy relationships. Our secondary goal is to raise awareness within the general population on issues surrounding disability and social relationships. To realize these goals we provide a safe space, hold inclusive events, and engage in other activities that empower young adults with disabilities to maximize their potential.

Our presentation will use the personal story of Tim Rose & Natalie Sanborn to examine disability and relationships. We’ll take a fun and informal look at the ups, downs and twists of disability and positive relationships. Have questions? Bring them. Have thoughts? Share them. Have interest? Come and join us. All are welcome.
