6TH GRADE ACTIVITY: ORAL PRESENTATION OF THE INFORMATION COLLECTED ABOUT

VOLCANOES

TEAM WORK OF SEVEN CHILDREN

MATERIAL:THE MODEL OF A VOLCANO COSTUMES A VIDEO CAMERA POWERPOINT USED AS BACKGROUND

WARM UP: READING COMPREHENSION ABOUT A REAL CASE ”THE CITY OF POMPEII WAS DESTROYED BY THE ERUPTION OF A VOLCANO”

• PROCESS:• THE CHILDREN GATHERED INFORMATION ABOUT VOLCANOES AND

MOUNT SAINT HELENS.• THEY SELECTED THE MATERIAL THEY FOUND SUITABLE FOR THE

SUBJECT.• THEY DIVIDED THE INFORMATION SO THAT EVERY STUDENT COULD

PREPARE A SECTION.• A GROUP MADE A MODEL OF A VOLCANO USING A PLASTIC BOTTLE

AND NEWSPAPER AND IT WAS DIVISED IN SUCH A WAY AS TO SHOW THE ERUPTION OF A VOLCANO.

• AFTER A DISCUSSION THE STUDENTS DECIDED WHAT THE PRESENTATION WAS GOING TO BE LIKE

PRESENTATION:AN ECCENTRIC PROFESSOR WAS GOING TO TALK ABOUT VOLCANOES AND SHOW THE REAL CASE OF THE ERUPTION OF MOUNT SAINT HELENS .THE CHILDREN DECIDED ON THEIR COSTUMES FOR THE PRESENTATION AS THEY CREATED FUNNY CHARACTERS EG. DR.NUTS,DR.LAVA,DR. KAN-DO ETC.THE VIDEO WAS FILMED BY THE CHIDREN THEMSELVES. THEY ENJOYED A LOT AS THEY COULD USE THEIR CRITERIA TO DECIDE WHICH SHOTS WERE GOOD AND WHICH HAD TO BE FILMED AGAIN WHEN THEY REALIZED THAT EITHER THE BACKGROUND OR ANY OTHER DETAIL WOULD SPOIL THE FINAL PRODUCT

Lesson PlanLesson Plan

Lesson Phase/Activity Exercises PurposeWarm up The teacher tells the students: If I had a lot of

money, I would buy a house in Miami. What about you?

• To first introduce students to an imaginary situation.

Listening Comprehension and Oral Comprehension Questions

More 3. Unit 9. Students listen to the lesson. The same includes 2nd conditional structures. The teacher asks comprehension questions.

• To introduce the 2nd conditional structure in context.

Whole class guess work The teacher elicits from students the new structure and copies it on board. Its usage is also elicited. Now that the structure has been inferred, the teacher provides an example on board within a meaningful context.

• To introduce the second conditional with examples on the board using inductive approach.

Role Playing (oral production) Simulation and Problem solving

Students go to the front in pairs to role play unreal situations provided by the teacher.

• To make them produce orally.• Students become aware of the new structure usage in real life.

Cross-curricular activity: Using Maths in Science, Using 2nd conditional structures within a Science context. Problem solving

This exercise is explained in class. Students learn that the gravity on each planet is different. The activity consists of calculating (for example) how much they would weigh on Mercury if they weighed 60 kilos on Earth. They complete the photocopy and write 2 examples in their folders.

• Students practise unreal situational structures while learning/reviewing a Science subject.

Evaluation (Individual work): Written production (application) with different situations. Problem solving.

The students read different situations, which are all related to a same subject: “Are you a good citizen?” They have to write what they would do in each situation.

• Students apply the new structure within a provided context.• The teacher evaluates if the structure has been properly understood.

Evaluation (Homework) Students will write about their dreams. The teacher provides a photocopy with some bubbles as a guidance.

• Students practise the new structure• The teacher evaluates the students´understanding.

Cross Curricular Activity:This exercise is explained in class.Students practise unreal situational structures while learning a Science subject. The strategy problem solving is used in this exercise.

Students learn that the gravity on each planet is different .The activity consists of calculating (for example) how much they would weigh on Mercury if they weighed 60 kilos on Earth.

ARE YOU A GOOD CITIZEN? Unreal situations.

What would you do if you were in the street and you saw two people fighting?

What would you do if a shop assistant in a department store gave you too much change?

What would you do if you were sitting on a crowded bus and an elderly woman got on?

What would you do if you wanted a noisy party in your flat?

What would you do if you found a homeless woman sleeping in the entrance to your flat?

You are waiting to buy a phone card. The young man who is in front of you leaves the shop and walks down the road. When you look down, you see he has dropped a new phone card. What would you do?

Conclusion:

Students have learnt how to talk and write about unreal or not probable situations, .

Intelligences:

√ Sintética Creativa√ Emocional√ Lógica matemática√ Linguistica

Strategies:

→ Simulation: Students role played an imaginary situation (Oral production)

→ Problem solving: Students had to use critical thinking in order to solve the problems in the situations provided (cross- curricular activity, individual work and oral production).

→ Decision making

Competences:

√ Saber ser persona (Are you a good citizen?)√ Saber conocer (Analizar y resolver situaciones problematicas aplicando lo aprendido)√ Saber hacer (Interpretar y poner en práctica las consignas de trabajo, manejando un grado de autonomía correspondiente para su edad).
