General Information
Grading
Grades will be assessed based on a rubric for each report. The rubrics will be attached to your
final copy after grading. I have included sample rubrics at the end of this packet. Short form
book reports will count as a single assignment, while all other forms will count as a double
assignment.
Guidelines
1. All books must be approved by Mrs. Gunter. There will be a due date for each book approval.
Feel free to have the book approved before the due date in order to get an early start on your
next report. However, if you miss the approval dead line, you will lose points for the overall
project.
2. The book must be new to you.
3. With the exemption of the poetry report, you must read the book from cover to cover. For
the poetry report, you will be directed to read sections from several different books of poetry
to add up to 75 pages total.
4. Remember to follow the unique instructions for each report carefully. Refer to the rubric,
since it will be the basis of your grade, to be sure that you have met each requirement.

Purpose: The purpose of this report is to expose you to a variety of poets and styles of poetry.
For this report, you will read 75 pages of poetry by a variety of authors. An anthology of

1. Read 75 or more pages of different kinds of poems (long, short, and medium length).
Read serious, silly, historical (such as Paul Revere’s Ride), prose, etc.
2. Chose a poem of 10-20 lines that you liked best. You will focus on this selection for most
of your report.
3. Write a one page paper including the following:
The poem that you chose, copied word for word in proper lines and stanzas
(remember to use quotation marks).
What the author was trying to say (Use a minimum of 5 good sentences.)
The mood of the author (Use a minimum of 2 good sentences.)
Reason you chose this poem (Use a minimum of 2 good sentences.)
4. Draw an illustration to go with your poem
5. Extra Credit: Memorize your poem selection and recite to me for up to 10 points extra

Historical Fiction Google Slides Report
Pick a book that is based on a historical person or event. The story should be
fictional, but have a strong historical emphasis. You will need to be able to honestly
tell me that you read the entire book.
We will be learning how to create a Google Slides presentation in class. By the time you design this
report, you should already know how to add slide backgrounds, animations, slide transitions, and pictures.
Your presentation should reflect your own creative style. I am expecting careful, thorough design; but
I will let you decide how you want to present your information.
Design Rules:
- Include one or more pictures per slide
- Make each picture enter with an animation and each slide with a transition
- Include 3-6 lines of information per slide with complete sentences (no more than 6)
- Introduce each line of text separately with entry animations
- Choose a background for each slide. You may make every slide the same, or vary the
background for each slide.
Content Rules:
- Choose 3 main character(s) and discuss their characteristics and personalities (3 slides - 1
slide for each character)
- Explain the plot of the story (1-3 slides)
- Introduce the Setting/Time period (1-2 slides)
- Research the historical characters/events in the book – what were they famous for? (2-5
slides)
- Tell about your favorite part of book and why you like it. (1-2 slides)
- Use accurate punctuation, capitalization, spelling and grammar.
Note: In order to earn an A on this report, be sure to do at least 10 slides. If you
choose to do the minimum number of slides per category you will not receive an A.
Presentation Rules:
- Present your information to the class using your Google Slides presentation. To get full
presentation points, speak with a strong voice, stand with good posture, and look up at your
audience.
Your final Google Slides presentation must be submitted as a digital file to our 6th grade Google Classroom page.

I have completely read this entire book and completed this diorama myself:
- Science Diorama Book Report
Pick a book on a science topic of biology (living sciences) or earth science
(geology, astronomy, planets, etc.) of at least 75 pages. After reading the entire book, start
working on the following project which will be due in March.
Diorama: You will create a “shoebox” display of something you learned in the book. Scenes
from a jungle, ocean, mountains, outer space, etc. can be created using various craft supplies.
Sand can be sprinkled on a glue base to create trails. A mountain can be formed from crumpled
and painted craft paper. Be imaginative and creative and let us see what you are capable of!
Cover the outside of your shoe box with colored or patterned paper. I should not see
any part of the original shoe box. (Wrap it like a present).
Cover the inside of your shoe box with a background to match the theme of your
diorama. Be sure to cover the inside of the shoe box lid with paper to serve as the
“floor” for your diorama display.
Create diorama scene/display.
Attach 4x6 index cards (at least 4) to the top and sides of the shoe box. If they hang
off a bit, it’s OK. On the cards, include interesting and explanatory information from your
book about what you learned. Use complete sentences, do not skip lines, and fill the cards
completely. Use cursive and black ink. Number them in the order that they should be
read.
Attach the completed signature card to the BACK of your project box to show that you
have completely read the entire book.
Your book report will be graded according to the attached sample rubric, so make sure that you
watch your spelling, punctuation, neatness, and attention to detail.
