6th Grade Language Arts and Reading block Syllabus General info for Mr. Baggaley’s Class Welcome to my class! A wise 6 year old once said, “My teacher thought I was smarter than I was- so I was!” I completely believe this statement! I am ecstatic to be able to share this year with you! We will learn and grow together as we travel through this school year! Scan this code at the top of the page to go to my website for more information about Mr. Baggaley, class, and find out how to complete your first assignment online! We will be teaching the standards of the Utah Core Curriculum for English/Language Arts and Reading. This includes a variety of writing and reporting activities, and reading both fiction and nonfiction literature. In addition, every 6th grader is required to read 30 books during the whole school year as part of their reading grade. So, make it a goal to read at least 20 minutes every day! Evaluation: Student's grades for each separate subject area will be determined on the point/percentage system and will consist of individual and group assignments, homework, quizzes, and tests. You may check your grades at any time by accessing your account on PowerSchool. Late Work Policy: When a student is absent it is his/her responsibility to ask for the work that was missed. I have a binder with all assignments in it. He/she will need to pick up the missed assignments on returning to class. I will give one week to make-up this work for full credit, but anything later than that will be marked as a missing assignment and not given any credit until turned in. Study Hall and After-school tutoring will be available to assist students with his/her assignments. Please use this time for extra help and follow-up on work when a student is absent. I can be reached 30 minutes before or after school at 563-6229, or by email at [email protected] if you have any questions. I will use the missing assignments report that is handed out each Monday in Study Hall instead of the traditional grade print out to communicate between us. This keeps you updated on your child's grade so there are no surprises! :D Supplies: Please bring these materials each day to class, no later than Monday, August 25th: A zippered binder Composition Notebook A zippered pouch (this fits in your binder to carry the rest of the supplies) Colored pencils Lined paper Large glue stick Small scissors Several pencils Pink pearl eraser Fun, colored pen *Please Note: If your child is in my class for the English Language Arts/Reading block AND Social Studies, you only need one set of supplies to be used for both classes. :) Other teachers have a similar list. The highlighted items on the list are things that may differ from other teachers’ lists.

Citizenship: When students come to middle school they are given a CITIZENSHIP grade from each teacher, in addition to their academic grades. At the beginning of each term, each student will receive a perfect citizenship grade, which is an "H." Violation of the classroom rules will be documented on Class Dojo and the “H” will be bumped down, effecting the student's citizenship grade. After 3 TARDIES, the citizenship grade will be bumped down as well. Here’s the breakdown:

0 Infractions = H for Honor 4-6 Infractions= N for Needs Improvement

1-3 Infractions = S for Satisfactory 7+ Infractions = U for Unsatisfactory

Classroom Norms and Expectations: 1. BE KIND! :D 2. Come to class prepared with ALL materials and homework. 3. Be in your seat when the bell rings, with no food, gum, electronics, toys, etc. 4. Be positive and treat ALL members of the class , and the teacher, with respect. 5. Follow directions the first time without questioning or whining. 6. Work on class assignments the entire period and be on-task until instructed to clean up. 7. Use the 4 minute passing time between classes to go to your locker, use the bathroom, and get a drink.
