6 th graders Map the World! using ArcGIS Online These three ArcGIS Online lessons were prepared for two 6 th grade Social Studies classes in Spring 2017. The school has a free ArcGIS Online account and the following were set up prior to the first lesson. 60 Individual student & teacher accounts ArcGIS Online Group created called 6 th grade Social Studies (all students and teacher added as members) o Storymaps and maps and data added to this group based on teacher’s lesson plan 2 nd and 3 rd Groups created (1 for each class), students added as members to their class group so they can share their individual maps with the whole class Each lesson took approximately 45 minutes and the students used Chromebooks with wifi to access ArcGIS Online. These three ArcGIS Online lessons were prepared for two 6th grade Social Studies classes in Spring 2017. The school has a free ArcGIS Online account and the following were set up prior to the first lesson.

Map Lesson 1 goals: • Sign in with your account • Look at 2 Groups and view a storymap • Create and save and share your own Map 1 with Group TASK DONE Part 1: Getting Started Open Safari or Chrome and open this website http://tinyurl.com/[shortcut to school site] (full URL is https://[schoolname]s.maps.arcgis.com)

Sign into the ArcGIS Online using your student account username= [school initials+first initial+lastname] password = [same password for all student accounts]

Part 2: Group sites for your class Click on Groups tab at top Click on 6th grade Social Studies group to see maps to explore Click on Nuclear Detonations since 1945 and View button Zoom out to see entire world and read the Map Legend Click on Play button to play time series, click on map points for more information about each detonation

Answer questions on page 2 Part 3: Make your own map Click on Maps tab at top Click in Search bar at far right, type in [School name] Zoom in/out, Pan map around neighborhood & city Click on Basemap button and change basemap to Imagery, USA Topo, OpenStreetMap, and Imagery with Labels

Click on Add Data then Add Map Notes to set point on school Rename point and change symbol Save your map with title= Map 1 – [Name] and tags (Your map is saved to My Content section)

Part 4: Sharing your map Click on Share button and Share map with 6th graders Group Click on Groups tab and open 6th graders Group to see your map *Bonus questions on page 2*

Map Lesson 2 goals: • View a Storymap about India’s history and a Map Journal about Pakistan • Create a map with locations, photos, and links about Iqbal Masih, save and share Map with Group TASK DONE Part 1: Getting Started Open Safari or Chrome, open this website and sign in with your account http://tinyurl.com/[shortcut to school site]

Part 2: Explore maps related to India & Pakistan Click on Groups tab at top, choose 6th grade Social Studies group Click on History of India Storymap, click on map areas, answer questions Click on The Most Beautiful Places to visit in Pakistan map, click on map points and photos, answer questions on p.2

Part 3: Make your own map Click on Maps tab at top, and search for Muridke, Pakistan Change Basemap to Imagery with labels and Zoom in Click on Add to Map Notes, click on point and change Title to Iqbal’s Hometown and change symbol to Basic - white flag

Save your map with title= Map 2 – Iqbal’s life and legacy and type tags Open a new tab and Google search for Iqbal Masih, click on his photo from moralheroes.org website and copy link address (should be a JPG)

Back in the map, click on 1st point and Edit and paste URL in Image URL Click on Pakistan point to see Iqbal’s photo in popup In Google tab, click on Wikipedia page about Iqbal and add 3 map notes of locations of places he visited, schools/monuments named for him -Copy and paste the Wikipedia URL into each popup

Zoom out to see all your map points, Click on Bookmarks and type “Iqbal’s life and legacy”

BONUS: Open a new tab and go to goodweave.org website, Add Map Notes of the organization’s locations in Afghanistan and worlwide

Part 4: Saving and Sharing your map Save and Share your map with 6th graders Group Click on Groups tab and open 6th graders map the world Group to see your classmates’ maps

Click on My Content to see the list of your maps

Part 2: Explore Chicago maps, different map styles Open a new tab in Chrome and go to this website to view a map of the CTA L train system map http://www.transitchicago.com/assets/1/maps/ctatrainmap.png

Open a new tab in Chrome and go to this website to view a map of Chicago’s L train map created in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright http://www.tubemapcentral.com/pod/chicago_flw.jpg

Compare the style of the FLW map to the original transit map and answer the questions on the back page

Part 3: Make your own map with different map styles Click on Home tab and type kowalsky in Search and click on MAPBOX (Katie KowalskY style) (remember to uncheck the box to only search your school’s account)

In Search box in top right corner, type [Your School] to zoom to the school and click Add to Map Notes to edit the symbol

Zoom out to see the whole city and then the whole US Click Save As and type Map 3 – My Chicago and add tags: Chicago, Styles, Fun

Click on Add – Search for Layers and Find: watercolor In: ArcGIS Online and click GO. Next to StamenWatercolor/OSM click Add and Done
