The Day of Small Things
There is a story of an Atlantic passenger lying in his bunk in a storm, deathly sick--seasick. A cry of "Man over-board" was heard. The passenger thought, "God help the poor fellow--there is nothing I can do." Then he thought at least he could put his lantern in the port-hole, which he did. The man was rescued, and recounting the story next day he said, "I was going down in the darkness for the last time when someone put a light in a port-hole. It shone on my hand, and a sailor in a lifeboat grabbed it and pulled me in." Weakness is no excuse for our not putting forth all the little strength we have, and who can tell how God will
use it?
When the prophet Zechariah spoke of the promise from God that Zerubbabel would complete the work of rebuilding the temple, he asked the people, “For who has despised the day of small things?” (Zech. 4:10). The prophet Haggai had spoke of this when he wrote, “Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? In comparison with it, is this not in your eyes as nothing?” (Hag. 2:3). There were those older individuals who wept when they saw the temple of Zerubbabel. They had seen the beautiful temple built by Solomon and by comparison this temple was as nothing. However, small things can be great when given over to the use of God. In Acts 9:36-41 we read the story of a disciple by the name of Tabitha (Dorcas). Dorcas had died and her body was washed and laid in the upper room while the disciples sent for Peter. When Peter arrived we are told, “Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them” Acts 9:39). The Greek Lan-guage indicates that the clothes those widows were wear-ing were the very clothes that Dorcas had made for them. She had used a sewing needle to make clothing for the widows. A needle is a small thing and perhaps some would consider it as nothing. Yet Dorcas used that needle for doing good to the glory of God. The text describes Dorcas saying, “This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did: (Acts 9:36b). David was a young man armed only with a sling and five smooth stones, yet used in God’s service to battle the one who had defied the Lord, the God of the armies of Israel, that sling became a weapon of deliverance. Goliath had been the reason why all the men of Israel “when they saw the man, fled from him and were dreadfully afraid” (I Sam. 17:24b). When Moses was sent to deliver Israel from Egyp-tian bondage, he had nothing in his hand but a staff. Yet in obedience to God, Moses used that staff and by it God did great miracles to force the powerful Pharaoh to set Israel free. So many times I have heard God’s people say that they have no talent to use in service to God, however, we all have some talent and that talent if used for God’s glory can be used by God to accomplish great things for God!
BELIZE It is time to sign up for Belize. The cost this year will be 581.85. We have a tenta-tive date of April 8-15. There is a sign up sheet in the foyer. We are requiring a 100.00 non-refundable deposit this year because of the high cost of changing air-line tickets.
