2nd Annual Memorial Mass

We cordially invite you and your families to Kearney Burnaby Chapel’s Memorial Mass. Please join the team of Kearney Burnaby Chapel in honouring our loved ones who have passed on this year at this special Mass, that will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Church: 525 Slocan Street, Vancouver, on Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at 6:30p.m. OR St. Helen’s Church: 3860 Triumph Street, Burnaby, on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. Please RSVP to our office: 604-299-6889 or email us at [email protected], as we will be offering refreshments in the Parish hall.

Gold Mass for Scientists with Archbishop Miller

A Gold Mass for scientists will be celebrated at St. Mark’s Church, UBC, on Friday, November 15, at 5:30 pm with Archbishop J. Michael Miller, CSB, as celebrant. The Gold Mass began as an initiative of the U.S.-based Society of Catholic Scientists which exists to “witness to the harmony between the vocation of scientist and the life of faith.” This

Mass follows in the tradition of special Masses for members of a particular profession. The colour gold reflects the colour of the hoods worn by those graduating with a Ph.D. in science and because St. Albert the Great was an alchemist who worked to turn base metals into gold. Light refreshments will be served after Mass. All are welcome to attend.

Vocation Live-In at Seminary of Christ the King

On the weekend of Nov. 15 – 17, there will be a Vocation Live-In for boys or young men interested in the priesthood or the consecrated life, at the Seminary of Christ the King, Mission. For more information call 604-826-8975

Marriage Mentorship Workshop

Do you want to see more fruitful marriages in your parish? Come to this one-day workshop to find out how you can begin a marriage mentorship program for couples in your parish who are preparing for marriage or are newly married. Ryan and Mary Rose Verret, founders of the Witness to Love program, will be here to share how and why this program was developed and to present the resources available and how to start and effectively use the program at your parish. This one-day workshop is being offered twice – on both Friday, November 29, and Saturday, November 30. For more information visit www.rcav.org/event/marriage-mentorship.

Agape Street Ministry Halloween Candy Appeal

It’s that time of year again and Agape Street Ministry would like to invite you to share some of your Halloween candy with us. Each year we have thousands of street encounters where we greet the women and gift each one with a little bag of assorted candies with a prayer card inside. Without your help we cannot share Jesus’ message of love, hope and acceptance. Thank you so very much for your support. Call for pick up: 604-215-4115

Stewardship Reflections

“…for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the

one who humbles himself will be exalted.” (Luke 18:14)

Pride and ego are the root causes of most of our sins. Thinking your time is so valuable, your talent is better than anyone else and your money gives you status is

another way of making those things “gods” before God. Remember all those gifts were God-given. Instead we should be humbled by God’s abundant generosity and

our hearts should overflow with gratitude.

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

This coming week we celebrate All-Hallows Eve, which is really what Halloween is, but no longer

recognized as such. It is the celebration of the night before the Solemnity of All Saints, which is a beautiful

feast, actually a Solemnity, wherein the Church recognizes all of the saints who are in heaven…the vast

majority of whose names we do not know. The only ones we know, with the certainty of faith, who are in

heaven are the canonized saints. We know this because the Church acknowledges this by the process of

Canonization, that their lives have been found worthy to merit eternal life. God has validated the Church’s

declaration by way of miracles. The Church does not put anyone in heaven. The process of Canonization,

which is an infallible act of the Pope, acknowledges that this soul is in heaven by God’s mercy, love and grace.

There are other souls in heaven we do not know about and so they all – collectively – have this Feast Day of the

Church year. This Solemnity is not something they benefit from as they are already in heaven. We, you and I,

benefit from it because we celebrate God’s mighty power, love and mercy in helping them reach heaven and we

recall to mind that God will help us as well if we cooperate with him. There are two Masses on All Saints and I

strongly encourage you to attend one if you can: 8am and 7pm!

The next day, November 2nd, is when we celebrate the Feast of All Souls day. This is both a beautiful

feast and one that is recalled with sorrow in varying degrees. It evokes sorrow because we miss our loved ones.

This is totally human, but it is a beautiful feast because when we commemorate the Holy Souls we are recalling

God’s merciful love. If in the past there was an overemphasis on the possibility of damnation it seems that today

there is an overemphasis that everyone goes to heaven. The truth of the Church is that only by God’s grace do

we not go to hell and only by God’s grace can we go to heaven. We, of course, must cooperate and strive to be

holy, follow the Commandments, believe the Creed, receive the Sacraments and Pray. Even by doing all of

these things we still struggle with our faults, our defects, our foibles and our sins. I hope and pray that we have

told God in confession that we are sorry and we’ll try to make amends. If we do not make sufficient amends

and/or we do not try to turn away from sin we may avoid hell, but we are not ready for heaven. God who is all-

merciful has created the state of purgatory in order that our imperfections, our forgiven sins for which we have

not done sufficient penance, or tried to be truly detached from. The Book of Revelation teaches us: “But

nothing unclean shall enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood, but only those who are

written in the Lamb’s book of life.” (21:27)

Taking into account the above, this is why we pray for the souls of the faithful departed. No one knows

with certitude if their loved one is in heaven, and so we pray, in faith and hope, that if they are in purgatory our

prayers will help them, and if they are in heaven, God will use our prayers for someone else. Besides, when we

pray for the souls of the departed it is always important to remember that we can’t “force God” or “require

God” to apply our prayers for our intentions. We ask – beseech – God to do so. It is always important to

remember this. Offer suffrages for the Holy Souls, pray for them and befriend them. They will be so grateful

that you did not forget them and they will remember you when they see God face-to-face

What if today was your last day on earth?

Ask yourself the following questions, because you never know when it will be too late.

I’ll never forget the last time I saw my Nana alive. My parents and siblings and I were in Arizona, spending time with her and my Grandpa in their home. She had ALS, and it had progressed such that she could no longer talk, eat, or walk on her own.

I was brushing my teeth at the bathroom sink on the last day of our visit. As my Grandpa wheeled her past the bathroom, I came out, toothbrush in hand, and said goodnight again. She smiled big, her mouth filling with saliva bubbles she could not easily swallow, and gave me a tiny nod and wave. A few hours later, I saw the flashing red and white lights of the ambulance through the window of the bedroom I was sleeping in. We got out of bed to say goodbye to her body one last time before they wheeled her away.

Seeing her lying there on her bed, but no longer with us, was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Just a few hours before she was smiling at me, alive. Now, she was gone.

The anniversary of her death is coming up, and it reminds me to take a second to look at my life every year. We are not guaranteed any amount of time on this earth. As Jesus says, you do not know the day nor the hour, so stay awake (Matthew 25:13).

How can we stay awake to what’s important in life?

Take a minute today to think about your death. Not in a morbid or pitiful way, but in an honest, concrete way. You will die. And you don’t know when. So, consider the following questions. If today was your last day on earth, would you be ready to die?

First, here are practical things to focus on for the good of your body: 1. What do you want your funeral to be like? Think about if you want certain hymns sung or an open casket for visitation. 2. Where do you want to be buried? If you have a preference of cemetery or who you want to be buried next to, think about that. 3. Does someone you know and trust know the answers to the previous questions so that they can take care of things for you?

Next, here are practical things to focus on for the good of your soul: 4. When was the last time you went to confession? Might as well find a time to go this weekend. 5. Who do you still need to forgive? Now is the time to try to repair relationship; don’t wait another decade. 6. How much time do you spend on small or petty frustrations throughout the day? If you have a habit of getting too worked up about life’s minor annoyances, put them into perspective today.

There is no time like the present to consider the bigger picture of your life: 7. Are you living the way you want to be remembered? 8. What do you spend your time on every day? 9. What do you wish were different about your life right now?

All of the Halloween decorations starting at us in stores right now makes for a perfect time to do some self-reflection. Memento mori is a Latin phrase that means remember death. That fake skeleton hanging from the window in your neighbor’s house can be a subtle reminder to memento mori. Take stock of your life this week. What you do while you’re alive matters, so make the most of it.
