PROJECT GUIDE
A Guide to Developing a Successful Project
WHAT IS THIS EXPO ABOUT?
The Afrikaans Expo is an exposition where learners have a chance to showcase their projects
about creativity and design. Learners will all participate in different categories. During the Expo
learners can discuss their work with teachers, learners, parents and other interested people.
Demonstrations and talks will take place throughout the Expo.
WHAT IS A CREATIVE PROJECT?
Projects for the Expo should focus on more than just the final product. Take a look at the
following ideas on how to make the projects more creative and interesting.
FIRST IMPRESSION!!!
Indicate the Topic/Theme/Title
Collections
Other Computer Programmes
Flyers
Business Cards
Newspaper & Magazine Articles
A Report (Afrikaans)
Advertisements
You must be able to do a good and thorough job! This means that it should be your own idea
and not someone else’s idea. You may repeat or translate words from a well known lyric or book.
Your idea for a project should be an original one. The best Expo projects are not always
complicated, but they are imaginative and well executed.
EVALUATE PRIOR TO THE EXHIBITION
Review………. How well does it work?
Revise ………. What should I change?
Redo ………… Try an improved plan.
7
FINISHING ON TIME
Start as soon as you can. Do this by drawing up a timetable. Since you already know the date of
your Expo, you can now work backwards from this date, thereby allowing ample time for each
task. Projects done in a rush are usually unsuccessful. Set aside time each week to work on
your project. Things often don't go as planned. Allow enough time to improve your design or
revise your method of presentation.
REPORT: WRITING A REPORT (Compulsory)
You need to write a report about your project. The report will give the judges and other
interested people more information about your project. The judges will look at your poster or
display at the Expo, and this report will help them to decide which projects are the best.
Your report need not be very long, but it should be set out in a way that is easy to read. Break
up the writing by using paragraphs, headings and subheadings. Also use lists, tables or graphs to
present your information. It must be done in Afrikaans. A typed report always looks good.
Your report should contain:
1. A summary of your topic. This is the information you have about the project.
2. A clear aim, which explains what you plan to achieve with your project.
3. A description of the method you chose to expose your project to the public.
4. Descriptions of things you tried out, but which did not work so well. Explain which other
methods you tried.
5. Your ideas.
6. A bibliography with a list of the books, magazine articles, internet sites, CD’s or DVD’s
where you obtained important information.
7. An acknowledgements section. This is a list of the people who worked on the project as
well as a description of each member’s contribution.
You may add a few extra things to your report to show people how your project developed. For
example, pages from a diary of your activities, rough sketches of your first working drawings or
your original data sheets.
8
EXHIBITS: SHOWING YOUR WORK (Compulsory)
Your exhibit will show visitors to the Expo what your project was about. It is a display of
your work.
An exhibit is usually made up of a poster together with any special apparatus you used.
Keep the information on your display short, easy to understand and interesting.
People who know nothing about your topic should understand what you did, just by
looking at your exhibit!
Your report is also part of your exhibit, so that people can read more about your project.
IMPORTANT….THERE ARE TO BE NO GRAMMAR OR SPELLING MISTAKES!!!
Each exhibit at the Expo is given space on a desk of approximately 1,0 x 0,5m.
You may use a project board/pin board (available at CNA/Waltons) in order to create a
place to pin information on.
Look at the drawing below to see how to make most of the space available.
If you make your poster with three sides you will be able to display more information.
Gr.10-11: Your presentation must be completed and copied to a DVD or CD.
EXHIBITS: POSTER (Compulsory)
A poster is an important part of your exhibit. Your poster should be easy to read and understand.
It should explain what you did and how you did it. Make your poster colourful and interesting.
You want visitors at the Expo to stop and read about what you did. However, do not put too
much information on your poster. Anyone wanting further information can read your report.
9
EXHIBITS: EXTRA ADVICE
1. Bring your own drawing pins, staples, prestik, velgro, masking tape and whatever else is
necessary to put up your display.
2. Bring your own extension cord (extra-long) and two-way adaptors if you have a model or
apparatus that needs electricity to work.
3. Practice putting up your display to see that everything fits together properly. Remember to
bring along all the pieces for your exhibit, especially your report.
4. You will need to stand next to your exhibit for most of the time, in order to answer any
questions from visitors at the Expo. Please show enthusiasm for your project.
PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is defined as the submission or presentation of work, in any form, which is not one’s
own without acknowledgement of the source(s). It is an attempt to deceive the reader that the
work or ideas presented are your own, whereas, in fact they are the words/ideas of others.
A simple rule should be used when deciding if it is necessary to acknowledge sources. If you
obtain information from an outside source, that source must be acknowledged. Another rule to
follow is that any direct (verbatim) quotation must be placed in quotation marks and your wording
should clearly indicate that the item is not your own work and the source immediately cited.
Work referred to from Internet sources must also be acknowledged as above, with the web
address (URL) of the source included.
CHOOSING THE BEST PROJECTS
All participants who complete their projects and show their work at the Expo should feel proud.
Being part of the Expo is an achievement. For this reason, all the participants will get a certificate
to acknowledge that they took part. Judges will also decide on the best projects in each category.
When planning your project and preparing your exhibit, think about the following:
Does the display clearly show what the project is about?
Is this an original idea?
Was a proper method of presentation followed?
Do the participants understand their projects’ content well?
Was a lot of work needed to do the project?
10
The judges will probably want to talk to you to find out more about your project. Don’t be
nervous about discussing your work with the judges. They are interested in knowing what you
did. Please remember to respond ONLY IN AFRIKAANS.
BEHAVIOUR AT EXPO
As a participant at the EXPO, you are an ambassador for the school and your behaviour and
choice of content for your project should reflect this.
