PENDUKA

Matriculants vacate to Penduka

Entrepreneurship is not only about getting profits,

but giving aid to those around. This informs learns

more about innovation. In other words, people who

are interested in entrepreneurship come up with new

ideas through creating and designing. On the 10-14

of June 2019, the matriculants in the commerce

department undertook an expedition to Penduka

which brings hope and self- confidence to many.

This place is situated in Katutura, which is the biggest

township of Windhoek.

“The purpose of this expedition is to involve

matriculants with the society and the benefits that

come along with entrepreneurship to cultures. This

expedition is not only to have fun but it is also

contributing 50% to the end of year marks’’ said

Uncle Robert Siyanga a Grade 12, entrepreneurship

teacher.

A lot of activities were conducted during their

expedition:

Pottery: Learners were able to make their own pots

using paint to decorate the cups or pots they made.

Confectionery: Learners enjoyed baking bread. In an

interview with Lee-zaine Uaka one of the attendees

reiterated that “social entrepreneurship has to do

with asking questions about society and the people.

It is all about conceptualisation of the fundamentals

of the society and its management. Activities done

required entrepreneurship skills to perform them.”

Ultimately it is social entrepreneurship that involves

employer and employees’ relationship, planning

and operating a business.

DAY OF THE AFRICAN CHILD

The Day of the African Child 2019 commemorated under the Theme: Humanitarian Action in Africa –

Children’s Rights First. Like many other events at Amazing Kids, this day proves to be one filled with

excitement, curiosity, education and exhibition. A day in which the learners reflect upon the challenges

of the child in the African context, their victories and successes. They get to dress up in the different

cultures represented in Africa, taste the traditional dishes, recite cultural poems and perform cultural art

and dances. It is an opportunity to appreciate differences in language, colour, ethnicity and traditional

norms and practices. WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT BUT EQUAL!

NADEET Objectives: Understand the difference between sustainable and unsustainable life; know the physical and environmental adaptation of biotic and non-biotic.

Aim: Learners should be able to live a sustainable life, save energy and our natural resources.

Accompanying teachers: Mrs. Mridula Pathi and Mr. Siegfried Katjizeu

The Grade 6 learners departed at 09h30 on the 17th of June 2019 to NaDEET. We arrived on the 17th of June 2019 at 16:45 at NaDEET Centre. The welcoming was awesome and learners were divided into groups of different colors according to the cabins they were sleeping. They had to do house chores, like cooking and cleaning up after eating. Food was cooked on solar cookers using energy from the sun. Learners really had fun because they were learning how to use solar energy and how to sustain our environment. The activities lined up for the learners were very educative because for most of them it was first-hand experience.

Learners had to do the following:

• Weather reading • Dune walks and star watch • Animal studies • Drama on sustainability • Water conservation and reading • Keeping the environment clean and natural

Learners were taught how Re-use, Recycle and Reduce, 3R’s were practiced throughout our stay at NaDEET. The conservation of water was very important because of the scarcity of water in the desert, learners needed to adapt to the situation of using long drop toilets and showering using one bucket of water. This was a skill they needed to bring to the city as part of saving water at home.

The learners had a lot of fun during their free time, the boys would play soccer just to relax their mind and the girls enjoyed playing volleyball or just lazing around. The best experience of the Centre is the study of the Galaxy and the planets, the learners got a chance to study stars at night on top of sand dunes. This was a very educational experience for learners and for the teachers as well.

Conclusion: From the Grade 6 desk, we would like to thank God for the travel mercies and protection. Lastly we would like to thank all parents and guardians for their positive contribution towards the NaDEET trip. It was really worth it for the learners, as it was an eye opener in terms of saving energy and our natural resources as we all depend on natural resources for our survival. Above all they were taught the importance of living a sustainable life. Let’s encourage learners to implement what they were taught; together we can protect our ozone layer…..!

TECH INNOVATION BAZAAR

On the 22-23 May 2019, a grade 9 learner from

Amazing Kids called Berhane Wheeler, went to

the tech innovation bazaar that was held at

NUST. This innovation bazaar was meant to

encourage the upcoming scientist and developers

to pitch their ideas to different companies. The

bazaar is the first of its kind in Namibia which

aims at reaching the zenith innovation within

Namibia. Wheeler had to pitch his ideas in the

dragon’s den to big Tech companies such as MTC

amongst others. This platform gave Wheeler the

chance to pitch his mobile application called THE

LAB

He went to great lengths to complete his

application thus a privilege to share his idea. The

giant tech companies sat fixated to Wheeler as he

divulged his concept to the panel that held the

veto to decide on which idea saw its way through

to winning the investment to make the idea a

reality. When contacted, Wheeler said it provides

an opportunity for youngsters to work around the

clock to achieve great technological mileage.

Above all, such opportunities are presented to

everyone for embrace, awe and amazing

innovations in their lives for the benefit of the

community.

ERONGO TOUR

The Erongo Tour which took place from the 17th to 21st of June was a resounding success! The Grade 5 learners could not get enough of the brilliant Bushmen paintings in the Spitzkoppe Mountains, the exhilarating Mola Mola boat cruises, the slithering snakes at the Snake Park, the glitz and glamour of the Kristall Galerie, the busy Aquarium and the race to the peak of the famous Dune 7, marked some of the activities the learners experienced. The movie at the Atlantic Cinema and the fun games at Longbeach were the cherry on the cake! What an awesome adventure it was.

Uncle Andrew’s Soul Food Greetings to my

WONDERFUL Parents!

“Proverbs 22:6 states, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it”.

I believe that as parents we should not be so engrossed with the artificial things of life and burdened with worry that we cannot have time to educate our children from God’s great book. Parents who think they are above the law teach their children they too can be above the law.

This means that we actually teach our little ones to take on the role of a rebel and outlaw. Let us rather teach and instil principles of greatness since our Father is the King of kings!

Let us rather teach our children to make a powerful and positive difference in the lives of others instead of being selfish. Let us invest in our children as the treasures God has entrusted to us.

God bless you!

SPELL-A-THON

Grade 7A vs Grade 7B Grade 11A vs Grade 11B

It is well known that spelling aids in reading. It helps cement the connection that is shared between sounds and letters. The 2019 competitors remarkably performed marvellously and displayed strong competitive Spirit, greater knowledge and confidence that were quite entertaining. BRAVO!

SAFETY CAMPAIGN

Pictured above: Social worker, Celeste Allies from BelEspirit (Mental health Hospital), addressing the

Grade 5 and 6’s on the harmful effects of the hubbly bubbly.

What is a hookah?

A hookah, also known as the ḡalyān,

is a single- or multi-stemmed

instrument for vaporizing and

smoking flavored cannabis, tobacco,

or sometimes opium, whose vapor

or smoke is passed through a water

basin—often glass-based—before

inhalation.

Health Risks

Health risks of smoking through a

hookah include exposure to toxic

chemicals that are not filtered out by

the water and risk of infectious

disease when hookahs are shared.

Hookah smokers inhale many

chemicals that can cause cancer,

heart disease, lung disease, and other

health problems.

Because of inhaling these chemicals,

hookah smokers are at increased risk

of many of the same health problems

as cigarette smokers.

There are several case reports in the

medical literature of hookah

smokers needing treatment in

hospital emergency rooms for

symptoms of CO poisoning

including headache, nausea,

lethargy, and fainting. This is

sometimes called “hookah

sickness.” Hookah smoking can

damage the cardiovascular system

in several ways.

Its use elevates heart rate and

blood pressure. It also impairs

baroreflex control (which helps to

control blood pressure)and cardiac

autonomic functioning (which has

many purposes, including control

of heart rate)Hookah use also

acutely harms vascular functioning,

increases inflammation, and harms

lung function and reduces the

ability to exercise.

It is safer and healthier to discard

the use of the hookah altogether.

POLAR BEARS The 21

st of June is known to be the

coldest day in winter season. At Amazing

Kids this day is not just taken for granted

but churned into an amusement day. This

day is taken to be a warrior’s day as

people who are intrepid and confident

get into chilly water and move their limbs

in order prove their bravery and prowess.

All the school grade categories got a

chance to swim. The atmosphere was

joyful, characterised by the cheering of the

supporters in the background. The

teachers were participating in their own

accord making sure nobody got an injury

or a cold. The participants were less in

high school than in the primary school

and as a result it sends out a message that

younger learners are more adventurous.

After the chilling cold swim, the

participants received more hot chocolate,

slices of cake and a certificate of bravery.

Everyone was extremely ecstatic as they

look forward to the next polar bear swim

which will take place same time, same

venue next year on the coldest day of the

year. The polar bear should not be an

event that should be dreaded, however it

should be a day seen as an opportunity to

showcase bravery, skill and talent.

The learners received medals which will

symbolize their strength and confidence.

Medals are also proffered to encourage

learners to partake in the event In future.

In essence, the weather conditions do not

determine the bravery of a person, but

the attitude of the person towards the

weather is a true measure of it.

The “Sister City” – International Art Competition is an initiative of “Sister City” - New York driven by the

Municipality of Windoek. The Competition takes place once a while where Art students from different

schools are invited to participate. The aim of the competition is to encourage learners to submit articles

in various art forms like poems, paintings, mixed media, sculptures, etc. The theme for this year was to

portray the causes of environmental and global change. Well done to the Amazing Kids learners for their

participation and achievement.
