Our Read Write Inc phonics groups are going well and children are enjoying the fun and engaging sessions. Groups will also include children from KS2 next week which will help to improve the reading skills of any children who still struggle. We are focusing on Reading as a whole school and after half term will be introducing a superb Guided Reading programme called Destination Reader which is an approach to teaching reading in KS2. The approach involves daily sessions incorporating whole class modeling prior to the children applying these skills through partner work and independent reading. The approach creates a deep understanding of texts, developing oracy around reading and increasing children‟s breadth of reading. Destination Reader also helps to build a culture of reading for pleasure and purpose. Our long term aim is to raise enough funds for a new library, a space where children can relax and develop their love of reading for pleasure and take books home. Dr Laban has been teaching children about various key figures from history in his Thursday assemblies. Yesterday he spoke of Martin Luther King with the moral being mutual respect and kindness to each other. We enjoyed hearing Ayaan and Dhaven from year 3 read to us on Tuesday. On Tuesday night I was delighted to see so many parents at the first PTFA meeting of the year! It was a hugely impressive turnout and a great opportunity to meet some of you. Although I haven‟t worked alongside the committee for long it was clear to see their passion and enthusiasm for the school and its children. I would like to say an enormous thank you to you all for your efforts and energy over the last few years. Special thanks to Kate Rice the Chair, Lucy Flinter the Secretary, Andy White the Treasurer and Kate Carvil the Vice Chair who have given so much time and energy to the cause. We are very glad to hear you will still be avid members! The new committee has been formed and we look forward to announcing their names in next week‟s newsletter. This year we would like to collect tinned goods for the Trussell Trust and Food Share to help support families in desperate need of support. From Monday we will have a table for the collection in the reception area. We will take the items over to the Leytonstone Tesco weekly and appreciate all donations, however small. A list of suitable non-perishable items is available here http://www.tesco.com/food-collection/ Today I greatly enjoyed my Tea with the Headteacher! We had a wonderful time chatting about the children‟s achievements and positive attitudes this week, it was the highlight of my week! Well done this week to XXXXXXX see picture! I hope you have a lovely weekend with your families, Verity Carter Headteacher

We are focusing on Reading as a whole school and after half term will be introducing a superb Guided Reading programme called Destination Reader which is an approach to teaching reading in KS2. This week in YRLS we have been learning about all sorts of different things!

In English we have been studying the traditional tale The Little Red Hen. We have been retelling the story to our friends using story maps, puppets and actions.

In Phonics we are still concentrating on learning our initial sounds as well as segmenting and blending.

In Maths we have been learning what the words “more” and “less” mean and we have been counting different objects as well as playing lots of number games.

George has been counting the spots on the ladybirds!

GT Football Team

On Wednesdays our girls football team opened their league games with an outstanding performance. Winning 2 games, 4-0 and losing the last, 1-0! All girls played to their best showing us some GREAT football and team skills.

Well done to Kiarnah, Demi, Amy, Iris, Hannah and Emily.

GOOD LUCK for next week.

George Tomlinson PTFA Fundraiser

Design A Christmas Card Project This year the PTFA is running the „School Christmas Cards Project‟.

This is an opportunity for you to purchase cards with your child‟s own design on them.

This week your child will have received a design a card template. Please read through the instructions on the template very carefully to avoid mistakes. Spare templates can be collected from the school office.

Over the next week please help your child / children to complete a design of their choice.

If you want to participate in the Christmas Card Project, please return all completed templates to your class teacher

by Monday 17th October or they can be posted into the Design a Christmas Card post box in the school office.

Later in October you will receive a custom produced order form (one per pupil), showing their design. This gives you a preview of what the card will look like and an opportunity to spell check the details that will be printed on it. You can then decide if you would like to purchase the cards. They will cost £5 for a pack of 12 there is no obligation for

parents to purchase cards if they decide against it.

Personalised Christmas cards are lovely for family and friends to receive.

Get creative!
