• Reasons for updating to Exchange Server 2003:– New features, such as improved remote access– Need to standardize servers to Windows Server 2003

• Upgrade process is not overly complex– Overall infrastructure is shared– Both versions may coexist without connectors

The Upgrade Process

• First step: backup server is selected for upgrade• Actions following backup:

– Close all Exchange 2000 Server utilities – Run ForestPrep– Run DomainPrep– Ensure server runs at least Exchange 2000 Service

Pack 3– Install Exchange Server 2003– Remove Exchange 2000 Server optimizations from

the registry

• Disabling Terminal services closes utilities opened by other administrators

• ForestPrep extends Active Directory schema – Run ForestPrep several days before actual upgrade

• Considerations in running DomainPrep:– Run in root domain if first Exchange 2003 server– Run once in each domain before installation

• Installing actual upgrade of Exchange Server 2003:– Run setup.exe (found in \setup\i386 directory of CD)– Most Exchange 2000 Server settings are carried over– Remove certain Registry settings after upgrade
