7.2 Best Practices

7.2.1 Describe at least two institutional best practices (as per NAAC format given in next page)

Response: Yes

Best Practice (I)

1. Title of the practice:

Promotion of High Quality Research and innovation by concerted efforts

2. Objectives of the practice:

The main objectives of the practice are to create required infrastructure and

mentors for research and to promote research culture among faculty and

students. The institute strives to support an environment of research excellence

and celebrate the achievements of researchers and research teams and also to

uplift research work to the level of patenting.

3. The context:

Mentors are identified and students and faculty are motivated through

mentoring and exposing them to new areas and challenges. Encouraging

interdisciplinary research and industry interaction. Provision of seed money and

research grant.

4. The practice:

Centre for Innovation and Institution Innovation council has been started with the objectives to

impart and encourage creativity and innovation among students and faculty. To conduct

motivational programmes and skill development programmes on innovation. To encourage

innovation by introducing awards at various levels and to create awareness about IPR and

provide guidance. The Institute created the following centres to promote research in thrust areas

like: Disaster Management, Advanced materials, Nanotechnology, Sophisticated Analytical

Instrumentation facility, crystal growth facility and advanced manufacturing equipments and

CATIA software. Additionally, Faculty have been identified as mentors and encouraged to apply

for funding, and a Workshop on Research Methodology was conducted freely every year for

research scholars. Motivational lectures on preparation of research projects, funding of projects,

creativity and innovation. The institute conducted guest lectures, workshops, research training

programmes and seminars in latest topics, and introduced Students’ Project Exhibition and Best

Project prize. MoUs were signed with national research laboratories and industries for research

collaboration and internship, Faculty of Ph.D. and Ph.D. Graduates are encouraged to attend and

present papers at national and international conferences in order to be exposed to recent and

emerging trends in their fields of interest. In order to facilitate this, the management extends

financial assistance to TA, DA and registration fees at a rate of 50 per cent. Teachers may make

use of duty leave for such participations. These provisions are also extended to students for

participation in seminars / symposia / project competitions, etc. Seed money is given to carry out

the requisite preliminary work to improve the likelihood of receiving funding.

5. Evidence of success:

1. SAIF is being utilized by several research scholars of our

universities and other academic institutions. This has helped in high

quality publications and useful research outputs. The number of

technical papers published in journals increased from 118 in 2013 to

264 in 2016.

2. Centre for disaster management has motivated students and faculty

to work in this important area. Elective course in disaster

management has been introduced in B.E. (Civil Engineering).

Search and rescue robot has been designed by ECE students and

tested in the laboratory. A project proposal has been sent to BRNS

for prototype development. An international conference and

workshop on disaster management was conducted in 2014. Value

added courses on embedded systems, biomedical instrumentation,

software testing etc. were conducted which are useful for students in

their projects.

3. The quantity and quality of PhD and paper publications improved

over the years.

4. Generally the thesis submitted by Ph.D. scholars is recommended by

examiners for viva voce examination without delay. This ensures

speedy completion of evaluation.

5. Ten technologies/products were successfully developed through

SPIHER – MSME Business Incubator with a grant of Rs. 51.552

lakhs from the Ministry of MSME. Four patents have been filed.

Proposal for scaling up of SPIHER – MSME Business Incubator has

been submitted to NitiAyog for a grant of Rs. 10 crores. The

proposal has been short listed and presentation was made in Delhi. It

is under process.
