Editor, San Manuel Miner: Guess it’s time to write another letter! This time it’s about people who spread gossip and rumors! Yes, we do have them here, as perfect as our little town is. After our Gordon’s closed, the next thing I heard was that now the Bank of the West and the Post Offi ce were closing! Well, the fi rst thing I felt was ‘Oh no. Don’t tell me. What’s next’? But then sanity took hold. Every town has a Post Offi ce, else we wouldn’t get our mail. Our mail is important, and it’s vital to our community. Someone suggested we would have to go to Mammoth for our postal services. Hmmm....that didn’t seem right either. The bank, well you never know. So, I called the bank. The very sweet lady who answered, assured me that no question was dumb. So I ventured, ‘I heard a rumor that this bank is going to close. Is that true?’

Letter to the Editor: Stop spreading rumors!

Well, she quickly assured me that ‘No, it certainly is not, and you need to tell whoever started the rumor, to quit, period.’ She said they were going to get an article in the Miner. She said they had talked to the Post Offi ce, and no, they weren’t closing either.

So, what’s my beef? It’s about people who try to scare others with their gossip. This kind of thing really scares older, poorer, sick people the most. They can’t get out of town as easily as the rest of us can. So, I say, don’t be cruel.

If you hear someone say something outlandish, ask if they’ve checked it out. If they haven’t, then check it out yourself before you spread it around. You might just save someone some anxiety. /s/ La Norma RaaumSan Manuel

By Pauly Skiba What’s the best thing about summertime reading for kids? It’s carefree! You can read just about anything you want. No assigned books or topics. No book reports. You can take as long as you want to finish a book. Or decide not to finish it. You can tack-le sports books, cuddle with animal stories, imagine new worlds, meet fictional char-acters as real as your best friends. Even better, there are tons of fresh, new books at the li-brary, and kids can check out up to a dozen at a time for

two weeks. Beginners Books (for pre-school beginning readers or for parents to read to kids), are up front and marked with red dots. About two thousand titles to choose from. Chap-ter Books (for elementary school kids) are in one sec-tion on the shelves marked with blue dots. Young Adult books (generally for eighth grade and up) are in the back of the library. Here’s where you’ll find a Harry Potter, or science adventure, or vampires. Don’t overlook the classics, like Red Badge of Courage or Jane Eyre.

Check out the DVD section, too. Who picks out all these books and keeps the selec-tion up to date? Oracle Li-brary, along with other pub-lic libraries in Pinal County and across the country, uses Junior Library Guild, a book review and collection devel-opment service whose goal is to help libraries acquire the best new children’s and young adult books. With nearly 15 percent of our li-brary’s budget dedicated to children and young adult book acquisition, the Guild services assure these dollars

are wisely spent. There’s even more incentive to keep Oracle kids in the reading mood this summer. The summer Fun Reading Program, “One World, Many Stories,” welcomes chil-dren of all ages. Every time a youngster finishes a book, the title and youngster’s name will be posted on the library wall for everyone to see. On July 30, all postings will be gathered and a draw-ing will be held for a free family pizza party. In addition, all youngsters finishing five books about a child, town, or animal from

another country, will receive a special prize certificate for a single-scoop ice cream cone. The “One World, Many Sto-ries” summer also includes a week of crafts, games, and reading adventure activities

at Oracle Community Cen-ter. It will be held July 11-15 from 10 to 11 a.m. each day, and is just for youngsters ages six through nine. Parents should register their youngsters for either or both programs at the library.

They also saw a little bit of history as this is the last sound Super-8 fi lm made in America, as developing of Super-8 fi lm was discontinued in 2010. The fi nal fi lm of the evening was Walter’s Last Stand. It was fi lmed in New York,

Dear Friends and Family, My week in Panagyurishte is coming to an end and I have just fi ve weeks left in Bulgaria. Next week, I am going to visit my friend Diana in Sofi a and become a Montessori Preschool Teacher for a week and I’m still praying about exactly what is going to happen in the weeks following that, until my orphanage relief team arrives on July 10. So, this evening I decided to battle an endless amount of steps to reach this monument that stands in the center of town and overlooks

the town of Panagyurishte like a beacon. As I trudged up to the monument step by endless step, the warm Bulgarian sun enveloping every essence of my being as I suddenly wished I had my “sea bands” handy, I recalled the last time I had reached the top of that hill. It was the evening before I was to fi nish my Peace Corps Service and say goodbye to Bulgaria . . . I sat at the top of all of those steps, out of breath and introspective. I was ready to return to my comfort zone . . . ready to once

CHANecdote #5: Step By Step My Masterpiece Awaits!again fall headfi rst into the familiarity of shopping malls, department stores, English speakers, reality T.V., and hamburgers. Yet, as I looked out at the town I had grown to love displayed before me, I felt the sadness of leaving “home” all at the same time . . . leaving the memories, the adventures, the relationships I had built, and this “new familiar” that I had embraced for two years--not sure when, if ever, I would return. Yet, at that moment, I could not see the bigger picture that God had already painted for me, one little brush stroke at a time. Today, I heaved and hoed to the top of those steps once again, reaching the monument and collapsing into a puddle of salty sweat, unadulterated heat, and wiggly limbs. I gazed once again at the little town of Panagyurishte nestled into the green valley before me, and I thanked God for leading me back here for the fourth time now to walk in the plans He has for me in Bulgaria. From this perch, I could see every clay roof, every rolling green hill, every sun-soaked avenue and magical crevice. I remember when I fi rst arrived in Bulgaria in 2001, my new home, and I knew without doubt that God was with me . . . even in Bulgaria. This week has been a week of reacquainting with the culture, refreshing the language, and pondering the greatness of God in everything that surrounds me. I have seen God in the colorful display of fl owers and ripened fruits and vegetables, the rolling green hills and trees and the soft purple wildfl owers as far as the eye can see, the comforting pounding of a refreshing Bulgarian rain, the sounding of the church bells resounding

throughout the center, the clip-clop of a horses hooves racing along the cobblestone streets, sweet red cherry juice dribbling down my chin, the smiles on the faces of a beautiful nation. I thank God for that picture that He is continuing to paint, brush stroke by glorious brush stroke, as I remember that He

comes before me, He walks with me, He guides each and every step. Step by endless step He’s with me . . . even in Bulgaria. Step by endless step He leads us, no matter where we go. Isn’t He amazing, this God who is painting our Masterpiece?!!? Love,

Chantel :-)Editor’s Note: Chantel has started a daily blog to document her time in Bulgaria. If you wish to read about her adventures, head over to this website: http://chantelsloan.wordpress.com. Chantel teaches kindergarten at Oracle Ridge Elementary School in Oracle.

The 3 - 14 loss put San Manuel in the hole as they would have to battle back from the losers bracket. San Manuel then faced Maricopa on Wednesday taking a close 12 - 13 loss knocking San

His strong fi nish in the 50 Freestyle secured the perfect day for Mikey - a great accomplishment at any meet, but to do it at the league championship is beastly. The Sea Lions Swim Team are done with competition in the Central Arizona Swim League for the season, but will swim several meets against Tucson area teams over the next couple of months. The next meet is on Wednesday night (6 p.m.) at the San Manuel Pool against Flying Fish Swim Team from Oro Valley.

The Sea Lions swim team hosted the Central Arizona League Championship Swim Meet on Saturday at the San Manuel Swimming Pool. The overall team scores were as follows:• First place - San Manuel Sea Lions with 1058 points• Second place - Coolidge Dolphins with 758 points• Third place - Parkside Piranhas with 252 points• Fourth place - Florence Sharks with 239 points• Fifth place - Globe Piranhas with 185 points• Sixth place - San Tan Valley Barracudas with 159 points• Seventh place - Copper Area Stingrays with 86 points• Eighth place - Eloy Otters with 74 points This is the fi fth consecutive year that the Sea Lions have won the League Championship Meet. In the championship meet format, each swimmer is limited to four events. The following

fi ve Sea Lion Swimmers won all four of the races that they swam: Evan Apuron, Will Newman, Mikey Garcia, Meghan Cook, and Blaine Mulholland. The team broke 16 team records during the meet. Gia Sweeney, Darien Apuron, Morgan Cook, Piper Gray, Raquel Ortiz, Arielle Gray, Amara Apuron, Meghan Cook, Maya Gort, Will Newman, and Blaine Mulholland all set new team records during the meet.
