Inside this issue:

As I am writing this, I’m looking out my window. The wind is blowing, the leaves

are flying around, no snow and it is cloudy and dreary. It looks like a typical fall

day but the calendar says it is January 8th. What is going on with Mother Na-

ture??

Jeanne Walsh, our County FLE, has a new title. She is now a HDRE which

stands for Human Development and Relationship Educator. Jeanne presented at

our special interest meeting on January 24th.

We will NOT meet for breakfast on February 14, because it would be the same

day as our Valentine party at the Courthouse. We would rather have you come

for a fun afternoon. Too much running if we have both.

It was brought up at our January HCE board meeting to drop the bakeless bake

sales. After much discussion, your board decided to keep having them this year

because we don’t know what our expenses will be with the changes made by the

State with the Extension Office. These changes are explained in an article in this

newsletter.

Hope you are busy working on your arts and craft entries for the contest at the

Spring Conference.

If anyone has a good idea for a community service project for this year, please

contact one of our Executive Board members.

Chippewa County Association Home and Community Education Executive Board Meeting Courthouse, Room 13 January 2, 2019

The meeting was called to order by Fran Sykora with

the Pledge to the Flag, followed by the Creed.

Roll call was taken by the secretary with the following

present: Fran Sykora, Alberta Koneazny, Dorothy

Kaiser, Jean Cronquest, Dolores Schryver, Helene

Anderson and Jeanne Walsh.

Secretary’s report was read and approved.

Treasurer’s report was read and approved.

Bills will be paid.

REPORTS

Jeanne Walsh handed out articles about the undated

Jenni-o recall on turkey products. She also talked

about the recovery program and the re-entry program

from jail that she is involved with. Jeanne also does a

program once a week at the courthouse Your Money,

Your Goals.

Jean Cronquest is now reading books and giving rec-

ommendations for next year’s bookworm books.

Dolores Schryver discussed the Arts and Craft con-

test for the Spring Conference which will be held

April 5, 2019 at Faith Lutheran Church.

Helene Anderson agreed to stay as Scholarship

Chairman as there will be changes to how scholar-

ships are handled in the future.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Clubs were picked for help with Salad Luncheon and

Fall Luncheon.

After the meeting, we will go over the agreement we

will have with the County Extension Office.

NEW BUSINESS

Tailgate/Valentine Party will be held February 14,

2019 at 1:00 p.m.

Date for Speaker for March’s Special Interest will be

decided later.

Next Executive Board Meeting will be February 5,

2019 at 12:30 p.m. in Room 13 of the Courthouse.

Club News & Highlights

Happy: Members attended the Spring Conference and Salad Luncheon and provided review. The annual fall

luncheon memorialized our deceased members of our organization with a candlelit vigil. Plans for the Christmas Party

are complete with product for those in need.

Longview: We had a very nice Christmas Party for our December meeting. A delicious buffet was served. We

all sang Christmas carols, played games, and secret pals exchanged gifts. We gave a cash donation to Legacy in Chip-

pewa Falls as our Christmas project.

At the January meeting we discussed guidelines that were proposed by the Chippewa County Area Extension Director.

Members were encouraged to attend the Special Interest presented by Jeanne Walsh, on January 24th at the Court-

house.

OK: J.Cronquest provided an overview of recent Bookworm readings. Officers for the OK club will stay the same for

the 2019 program year. Monthly meetings were planned. December meeting agenda was discussed and decided to

meet at Cadott Family Restaurant and do a white elephant gift exchange.

Pleasant Hour: Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire Humane Associations were happy with the donations they re-ceived from our club. Members who attended the Hobby & Craft Workshop shared their experience. Election of officers

resulted in the officers remaining the same for the 2019 program year. Program books were filled in and dues were col-

lected. This months project consists of collecting hats, scarves and mittens for those in need. A brief reading from the

AARP paper was provided on “What Drives Up the Cost of Driving?”.

At the December meeting we enjoyed each others company and told stories of Christmas in our homes as children and

as we grew older in our own homes. There was no formal meeting, no business was conducted, nor money collected.

Unlimited: December meeting was held at China Buffet with an exchange Christmas cards, treats and gifts. Secret

pals were revealed. Names for the new year of secret pals was completed. Each year we sent Christmas cards signed

“from Santa” to residents of a nursing home. The next meeting will have games and prizes to conclude the Christmas

season.

The January meeting was held with the continuation of our Christmas party. New elected leaders are Roberta Culbert,

President; Sue Ploude, Vice President; and Sharon Rowan, Treasurer. New registrations were completed and mailed.

Plans were made and a date set for the Spring Conference on April 13. Plans were made to attend the Special Interest

session on January 24th.

Happy New Year! Everyone did a wonderful job in 2018 with Cultural Arts and they were dis-

played in the Chippewa Falls Library during HCE in November. After New Years, we can work on

our Cultural Arts again for Cultural Arts on April 5th at Faith Lutheran.

HCE will once again be offering two (2) $400.00

scholarships to Chippewa County resident seniors

enrolled in their first year of college or technical col-

lege. Applications are available on the Chippewa

County UW-Extension website at

www.chippewa.uwex.edu under the Family Living

Tab. A letter with application and information has

been sent to all Chippewa County High Schools to

share with all eligible students. Applications are due

to the UW-Extension Office on or before April 1, 2019.

If you know a senior that would qualify for this oppor-

tunity, encourage them to apply.

February 2019 Special Interest

Happy New Year This article is written only by Jean because Wiggly is happily hibernating. My yearly Christmas present is that the days are slowly getting longer. I really appreciate the extra sunshine. We finished our Fall reading session appropriately with “Snowman’s Story” by Will Hillenbrand. It was beautifully illustrated, which was good, because this book had no words. This fact made the preparation challenging, because there were no words to read. Our apprehension disappeared as we discussed the book with the children, and the readers had as much fun as the children. The story was followed by some very creative art projects, and we all left our schools with smiles on our faces. We will begin our Spring reading with another book dealing with snow, but very different. It is a National Geographic book titled “Snow Leopards” written by Jill Esbaum. The children will learn about rare and beautiful Snow Leopards, their habitat, how they have adapted to a cold climate, and how they care for and teach their cubs. The photographs in the book are excellent, and add a lot to the entire reading experience. Hopefully, it will help the children to appreciate our earth and its diversity. Our second book is also an animal book. “Night Animals” by Gianna Marino. The story deals with various night animals that are afraid and hide from other night animals until a bat explains they are all night animals. The story ends with a reassuring twist and shows there really is nothing to be afraid of in the dark.

MAY SPECIAL INTEREST

The May Special Interest will be presented by Veronica Knudsen, HCE Member. She will provide a presen-tation on beekeeping complete with samples from her beehive. This presentation will take place on May 8th at 1:00 p.m. in the Extension Office.

VALENTINE’S DAY FUN

At the program planning meeting in November we decided to have another Super Bowl Party

in February, but the game is February 3rd with no time before to have a party. Your Execu-

tive Board decided to have a Valentine’s Party on February 14 instead. It will be held at 1:00 P.M. in the Ex-

tension Office, Room 13. Wear red and come to have a fun afternoon of games and sweets. See you there!

MARCH SPECIAL INTEREST

Our March Special Interest will be presented by Joseph Malual, Community Natural Resource

and Economic Development Agent from our Chippewa County Extension Office. He is from

Africa and will talk about his country and make us a food from his country. It will be held on

March 14th at 1:00 P.M. in the Extension Office. Let’s have a good crowd attending.

Spring Conference

SALAD LUNCHEON

The Longview and Unlimited clubs are responsible for our annual Salad Luncheon on April 13th at the Christ

Lutheran Church, 467 Colome Street in Chippewa Falls. When you are doing your spring house cleaning

start collecting items for the White Elephant auction. Each club is also asked to bring a Silent Auction basket

or item. In addition, each club is responsible for three salads, meat, fruit and pasta, one pan of bars and

$3.00 for buns. The proceeds from this luncheon will be used for our two scholarships.

Your board decided to give two $400 scholarships out again this year. Invite your family and friends to come

with you for a fun afternoon. The cost is $7.00 for the luncheon and that is paid at the door.

SPRING CONFERENCE

Our annual Spring Conference will be held on April 5th at the Faith Lutheran Church, 733 Woodward Avenue

in Chippewa Falls. It will start at 9:00 with coffee and goodies. Our guest speaker will be Mary Jo Hanson

who will speak to us about Foster Grandparents in our local schools. We will have lunch and our annual Arts

and Crafts contest. We can have 11 entries that will go to state.

The special category this year is “Hattie’s HCE Hat”. The category list is included in this newsletter. We

have so many talented people in HCE and I expect a good show this year. Everyone is welcome to come.

I am asking that each club send one or more representatives. The cost is $8.00. The registration blank and

your check needs to be in by March 29th to our Treasurer, Dorothy Kaiser.

Salad Luncheon

HCE Healthy Lifestyle Survey (formerly On the Move and in the Groove)

HCE Healthy Lifestyle February 17 to May 11, 2019 HCE Family and Community Life focuses on all members being active, eating healthy and using local food as a state-wide activity. This four question survey will cover 13 weeks this Spring. Complete the survey and send it to your county coordinator who can submit it using the same form, being sure to include the name, address, phone number, email address (if available) and name of county. Individual surveys may also be sent if there is no county coordinator. In 2018 34 counties participated in "HCE Healthy Lifestyle Survey". The West District had the greatest participation, 28% of the members. The Northeast District had the greatest number eating 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables at 50% of those replying. The Northwest District had the highest rate of members eating most of their diets from local food at 28%. Congratulations to all who participated! Please mail all 2019 survey results by June 15, 2019. Counties with the greatest percentages will be recognized at the WAHCE state conference in September. These results will also be used in a report given by the Wisconsin WAHCE President at the NVON Conference in July. Cultural &Textile Arts Show 2019 Guidelines for County Chairs

ALL items, including Bonus Category, must be pre-registered. Registration is due August 1, 2019. Any items NOT pre-registered will NOT be judged or displayed. Only one entry on each registration form. Send all forms together immediately after county show. A County may enter a total of 12 entries plus one Bonus Category 19. A county cannot have duplicate entries in any lettered sub-category. The County Cultural Arts Chair must include a self-addressed postcard or email address to verify receipt of registration forms. If you do not receive verification within three weeks, please call or email the WAHCE Cultural Arts Chair. IMPORTANT: All entrants MUST sign the Registration form. Please read and sign below; entries will NOT be accepted if unsigned. Entrants will not hold WAHCE responsible for any loss or damage to any item submitted for use in the WAHCE Cultural Arts Show. Entrants give permission for their photo, photos of their entry, and/or print copies of their written entry to be used by WAHCE as seen fit.
