Fifth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2015

THE VINE AND THE BRANCHES Acts 9:26-31. The disciples of Jerusalem cautiously re-ceived Saul after hearing how he encountered, embraced and proclaimed Christ. 1 John 3:18-24. The letter of Saint John calls us to be-long to the truth by believing in Christ and heeding his command to love. John 15:1-8. Jesus parable of the vine and branches em-phasizes the need to be united with him so as to fulfill our vocation to love and serve in the Church and in the world. We must understand the importance of being firmly con-nected to Jesus Christ. This unity not only makes us true children of God, but it empowers us to bear the presence of Christ in the world – to carry on his mission in our words and deeds. This lovely image of the vine and the branches, Jesus stresses the unity that exists between him and his disci-ples. Vine and branches need each other. The vine can-not bear fruit without the branches. And the branches can have no life if separated from the vine. The branches need to be pruned (by trial) in order to be fruitful (Saint Paul is a good example). The second Reading tells us what we have to do in order to be at rights with God. We have to believe in his Son, Jesus and love one another as he told us. LA VID Y LAS RAMAS Hechos 9: 26-31. Los discípulos de Jerusalén recibieron con cautela Saúl después de escuchar cómo se encontró, abrazó y proclamó Cristo. 1 Juan 3: 18-24. La carta de San Juan nos llama a perte-necer a la verdad y creer en Cristo y hacer caso a su mando del amor. Juan 15: 1-8. Jesús en la parábola de la vid y las ramas hace hincapié en la necesidad de estar unidos con él a fin de cumplir con nuestra vocación de amar y servir en la Iglesia y en el mundo. Debemos entender la importancia de estar firmemente conectados a Jesucristo. Esta unidad no sólo nos con-vierte en verdaderos hijos de Dios, sino que nos da el poder de llevar la presencia de Cristo al mundo - para llevar a cabo su misión en nuestras palabras y acciones. Esta imagen preciosa de la vid y los sarmientos. Jesús insiste en la unidad que existe entre él y sus discípulos. Vid y ramas se necesitan mutuamente. La vid no puede dar fruto sin las ramas. Y las ramas no pueden tener vida si está separado de la vid. Las ramas deben ser podadas con el fin de ser fructífero. (San Pablo es un buen ejem-plo de ello). La segunda lectura nos dice lo que tenemos que hacer para estar en derechos con Dios. Tenemos que creer en su Hijo, Jesús y amarnos unos a otros como él nos dijo.
