Darvin’s Story

Darvin Knapp grew up in Sioux Falls, S.D.,with a great amount of time being spent on hisgrandparents’ farm located in Lake and MoodyCounties of South Dakota.

In 1979, he moved to Houston, Texas, tobegin his career in the oilfields. While in Texas,he worked for Penrod Drilling, Clayton WilliamsEnergy and then in 1994 began working forChesapeake Energy, for whom he worked inCollege Station, Texas, Lafayette, La., andOklahoma City, Okla.

He remained with Chesapeake Energy untilOctober 2007, when he resigned as the vicepresident of drilling to pursue other ambitions.

Darvin and his wife of 30 years, Annette,have three children: Myranda, B.J. and Leticia;and nine grandchildren: Annabella, Marek,Kaleb, Kennedy, Addisyn, Brooklyn, Sterling,Alexander and Robert Jr.

Ken’s Story

Ken Davidson was raised in Waco, Texas.With his dad working for Kerr-McGee, thefamily transferred to New Mexico, and then againto Oklahoma City when Ken was in sixth grade.

“Even though I was born in Texas, I’m anOkie,” he says with a smile.

Ken fondly recalls the days he spent on hisgrandparents’ farm, as a child.

“Because of that experience and what Ilearned there, I have a desire to be close to theland, again,” he says. “Our careers have allowed usto do it, later on.”

Ken is a proud alumnus of Oklahoma StateUniversity. He worked for Chesapeake Energy formany years, and retired in the fall of 2005.

Ken and his wife, Jimi, have four daughters—Holly, Tara, Sara and Jordan; and two grand -daughters—Ava and Adaline.

e story of 74-51

Ken and Darvin met while workingtogether for Chesapeake Energy in CollegeStation, Texas, in 1996. A year later, they wereboth reassigned to Oklahoma City. e two havemaintained their friendship and business alliancesince.

Darvin and Ken have always possessed adesire to get back to their agricultural roots withthe purchase of a cattle operation. And in 2004,that dream became a reality with the formationof 74-51 Cattle Company.

Darvin says the ranch brings backmemories of childhood.

“I always enjoyed being on the farm withmy grandparents, and I wanted to get back towhat I had always enjoyed as a young person,” hesays. “I always wanted to acquire some cattle andget started in the cattle business.”

Ken located the property as he was drivingon Highway 74 in 2004. He noticed the “for sale”sign on the property that is now the home place—at the junction of Highways 74 and 51, nearMarshall, Okla.

ey purchased that quarter of land, inaddition to the registered Angus cows—originallyowned by Larry Sebranek—that were on theproperty.

Larry was hired to manage and feed those20–30 cows until the spring of 2006, when WillyCouch was hired as ranch manager. Steve Oliverwas hired as a herdsman a few months later.

Shortly after, 74-51 purchased 40 registeredAngus cow-calf pairs from Oklahoma ranchRolling R3 Ranch, and the growth of the ranchbegan.

Today, 74-51 consists of registered Angusand SimAngus cattle, selling about 300 bullsyearly.

In recent years, the demand for 74-51 bullshas outgrown supply, manager Willy Couch says.erefore, 74-51 relies greatly on the support ofcooperator herds across the country: those ofFenton Farms, Stigler, Okla.; Rusty MillerHerefords, orntown, Ind.; and Elmore CattleCo., Waukomis, Okla. In addition, TravisPembrook, Fairview, Okla., provides bull buyingassistance throughout the year.

“ese cooperator herds provide largevolumes of quality cattle for our customers,”Couch says.

74-51 strives to provide quality service toproducers at all levels of the production cycle aswell. e ranch recently partnered with theMason family to purchase Northwest Stockyardsnear Enid, Okla.

“We felt it was an important piece to ourplan to become an all-inclusive operation,”Darvin says. “We can go back to our customerswho are buying our cattle—offering customerappreciation sales, and offering another avenue tohelp them market their cattle.”

Ken says 74-51 strives to provide value tocustomers at all levels of production.

“Darvin and I are like T. Boone Pickens inthat we’ve learned a fool with a plan is better thana genius with no plan,” he says with a laugh. “Ourplan is to continue to improve our seedstockoperation and improve our commercial herd.And, we hope to be in all spaces within the cattlebusinesses—from a producer all the way toproviding beef to the retail market, at some pointin time.”

Darvin says he views 74-51 as a legacy hehopes to preserve for generations to come.

“I view this ranch as something we canleave behind to our kids,” Darvin says. “We hopethey’ll take as much pride in it as we do, and seethe value in it—to be out working with theirhands.”

For Ken, he feels a responsibility to be asteward of the land.

“I have learned honesty, hard work andintegrity from people in rural areas,” he says.“Being good stewards of what God has made—that being the land. It’s more than just a personalgoal; it goes back to being humbled by what Godhas created. And it helps keeps me in the placethat God wants me to be.”

Not only does 74-51 strive to care for theirland and animals, they strive to provide qualityfor customers too, Darvin says.

“When you look at the amount of timewe’ve been in the business, and the reputationwe’ve had for doing things the right way, I findgreat pride,” Darvin says. “We have a reputationfor the quality of cattle—from the sale ring to theshow ring. Everything we do is geared toward thecustomer—making them happy, and bringingthem the best value for their cattle.”

Ken agrees.

“I absolutely love it,” he says. “I love seeingthe animals and trying to raise and nurture andengineer a product that the American consumercan trust. at with our brand on it, it’s as goodas it gets—it’s second to none.”

Darvin says the 74-51 crew works hard tomaintain the trust and loyalty of their customers.

“Everything we do goes back to themanagement and the quality of service we put outthere,” he says. “At the end of the day, yourproduct is only as good as your reputation. Wewant to make sure we’re doing the right thingsout there.

“I hope they know when they purchasecattle from us—whether it be momma cows orcalves or bulls—that they leave feelingappreciated,” Darvin continues. “We hope theyfeel they’re getting a great animal for a fair andmarketable price. We’re not about takingadvantage of our customers—we want them, aswell as us, to make money.”

Ken agrees.

“When we say something, we’ll do it,” hesays. “We care about their challenges, theirfamilies, their hopes and their dreams. When ourcustomers have a problem, it’s our problem. We’regoing to be right there, shoulder to shoulder withthem.”

Above all, Darvin says, 74-51 is committedto the cattle industry and its customers.

“We don’t take anything lightly,” he says.“Just like with our oil careers—which we’ve beenin for more than 30 years—we’re in it for the longhaul.”

Willy and the crewat 74-51, along with their cooperators, have assembled a sound, functional set of bulls that excel in phenotype and in-dividual performance while maintaining a strong genetic base with numerical balance and diversity. The dispositionof this group of bulls is worth noting as well. Zach and his crew have even taken the time to halter break a good por-tion of the bulls to ensure that they are easy to handle when you get them home.

Turn in Bids Over the Phone. This is our traditional method of buying livestock. To get started, simply go online to www.superiorlivestock.com and

click on the tab titled “REGISTER FOR A BUYER NUMBER.” Select the registration form for Superior Productions and print the registration form, fill it

out and fax it to Superior Productions at (817) 378-3380 with a signature on it. You can also mail it in to the address provided on the form. Upon receipt

of this information, Superior will call you with a buyer’s number and the bid line phone number that you will use on sale day to place bids over the phone.

Click-To-Bid. This is Superior’s newest way to buy cattle! Please note that high speed internet is required—this is not for dial-up or satellite internet. Reg-

HealthBulls are current on all vaccinations. All bulls will have interstate health charts required for shipping into other sections of the United States. Any additional tests required forentry into certain states will be performed after the sale and prior to delivery at 74-51’s expense.

GuaranteeAll bulls sell fully guaranteed under current Suggested Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association, American Simmental Association or American Hereford As-sociation. In addition, 74-51 guarantees the bulls for breeding soundness through their first breeding season. 74-51 guarantees that all bulls sold are fertile and are sound breed-ers. Every bull 12 months of age and older will have a current Breeding Soundness Examination. In the event that a reproductive injury or structural soundness issue deems thebull unusable during the first six months after purchase, 74-51 will provide a suitable replacement or issue you credit toward another purchase from us in the next 74-51 sale.The salvage value of the bull will be subtracted from the full credit value upon receipt of a copy of the salvage receipt. Please contact us prior to salvaging the bull in question.

Trucking74-51 will coordinate the free delivery of bulls immediately after the sale. Pick up your bull/s at the ranch within five days of the sale and receive a $50 per bull dis-count. Please work with the staff at time of settlement to supply us with good working phone numbers to contact you. 74-51 will either deliver the bulls personally or employreputable trucking firms to assist us in the process. We will strive to make the delivery as convenient as possible and may have to ask some of you to meet the delivery truck atcentral points, such as vet clinics or auction barns in your area, as this will speed up the process. We will try to facilitate all shipments within 30 days of purchase. This son of the Denver Reserve Champion Panamajack combines what you would want in a big-time

show bull or a big-time herd bull. Lot 1 is one of the nicest fronted, best made bulls in the offering.

Willy thinks this is a bull “you could breed your cows to this spring and win your state fair with this fall.”

The dam of Lots 1–6, Lucy P061, has been one of the most consistent producers in the 74-51 herd, as is

Amongthe several hundred Angus bulls offered at Midland, Role Model was the phenotypic standout as well as being eval uatedas a top marbling and calving ease prospect. This young herd sire has an outcross pedigree that is also backed by aremarkable cow family. Role Model is big bodied, square hipped and sound with a look. This bull is a great fit for anyprogram. The sire of Lot 7, Easy Street, has quickly proven himself as the all-star calving ease bull in the 74-51 Red Dirt™ sirelineup. He was used extensively as a yearling in commercial heifer projects across the United States, not to mention hewas used on our own registered Angus heifers as well. If you polled the producers who purchase animals from 74-51, I don’t think you’d find one that would tell you that 74-51 doesn’tback up their animals 100 percent.

To sum it up: the honesty, integrity and professionalism that74-51 displays is incredible. A lot of people say they back their cattleup, but the management of 74-51 absolutely does!

with the Mason family, Ringwood, Okla., on thepurchase of Northwest Stockyards, formerlyknown as Winter Livestock of Enid, Okla, andNorthwest Cattle Feeders of Ringwood, Okla.With this purchase, the 74-51 crew desires toprovide its customers with another avenue formarketing their genetics.

Northwest Stockyards is managed by TreverMason; with brother Lance and father, Kirk,managing the cattle operation. Cousin OtisMunkers serves as vice president of operations.

e Mason family has a strong legacy of salebarn experience, beginning with their grandfatherand father, Pat Mason, who worked in the salebarn business for over 30 years.

“My dad and granddad both had a passionfor it,” Trever says. “We grew up in those alleys,and as a result have a great passion for cattle andthe livestock industry too. Once it gets in yourblood, you’re hooked.”

e Mason family began conditioning cattlein the early ’80s and to this day maintainsNorthwest Cattle Feeders, a feedlot 18 miles fromthe sale barn, available for 74-51 customers aswell.

e sale barn, with a sale-day capacity of10,000–12,000, was built by the Winter family in1993. In March 2011, the Mason family came toa mutual agreement to purchase the facility, with

the partnership of 74-51.

Trever says he views the sale barn as a chanceto continue the family legacy of sale involvement.

“We boys all have kids, and we want this tobe a family business,” he says. “My granddad’slegacy in this industry is important to me. Eachof us has different strengths—we have cattlepeople and ‘people’ people. We have what it takesto be successful, and we all have a stake in it.”

Trever says the Mason family desires to beinvolved in the community and to earn the respectand trust of their customers.

“We realize trust doesn’t come easy, andwe’re determined to earn it,” he says.

Northwest Stockyards is located in the heartof wheat pasture country and is arguably one ofthe nicest facilities in the state of Oklahoma.

Trever says he believes this combination cangreatly benefit customers of 74-51 CattleCompany.

“With seedstock producers and customerslocated all across the country, we can bring themtogether for special sales and commercial cattlemarkets, which will benefit everyone involved,” hesays. “And, during our weekly Tuesday sales, 74-51commercial cattle that are marketed through thesale will be promoted as being 74-51 seedstock.And when they start performing for buyers, theprices should reflect that.”

Willy Couch, 74-51 Cattle Companymanager, says his hope is that 74-51 customers canreap great rewards from the partnership.

“We can gather a lot of weaned calves in thefall, and help our customers get top dollar,” hesays.

74-51 Cattle Company co-owner KenDavidson says he believes this partnership canprovide additional benefits for 74-51 customers.

“We try to sell our best products—our bestbulls—to commercial producers,” he says. “Oneof the reasons we got into the NorthwestStockyards was to provide our customers a serviceand a market they can count on 52 weeks a year.”

In addition, Trever says, the Mason familyfeedyard, Northwest Cattle Feeders, can prove tobe a great resource for 74-51 customers.

“e freight is cheap, as it’s only 18 milesfrom the feedyard to the stockyards,” he says. “Wecan buy the cattle at the stockyards and conditionthem for a while at the feedyard, or in manycircumstances we can condition them prior toselling them at the stockyards, providing extrapounds, which means added value. It’s nice havingboth facilities available to our clients. It gives usan opportunity to add value on both ends of thespectrum.”
