If All Else Fails, Start with the Gut

As I learn more about optimal health, I am amazed
at how important your gut (digestive system) is to
overall health. I have come to believe that optimal
health, and many diseases, start with the gut.
Why the gut? The GI (gastrointestinal) tract uses about a
third of the blood that comes from your heart—the most of
any organ. Your gut also produces about 95% of the ―happy‖
neurotransmitter serotonin and has an intricate network of
neurons directly linked to the brain, making it the second
―smartest‖ organ of your body, behind the brain. Also, 80% of
lymph nodes in your body are located around the GI tract,
meaning the gut is vitally important to your immune system.
Your gut is also responsible for absorbing and processing es-
sential vitamins and minerals.
Many people think of the gut as the organ of digestion. How
well or poorly your body digests impacts the rest of the body:
Did you ever stop to think that many of these signs maybe be
originating from your gut? Once again your gut is vitally im-
portant to your overall health!
Poor digestion results from various causes and can lead to se-
rious inflammatory disease, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome
(IBS), Crohn’s Disease, and Ulcerative Colitits; as well as the
common disease processes of acid-reflux (heartburn) and ul-
cers that many often think of when considering the gut. A ma-
jor cause can be dysbiosis, which is when the balance between
good and bad bacterial in the gut becomes imbalanced. Your
gut has over 400 different microbial species. These microbes
are important for the digestion process and are a part of what
protects you from bad bacteria. Leaky Gut Syndrome, where
there is damage to the lining of the bowel, can result from
dysbiosis and lead to a myriad of disease states.
As you can see the results of poor gut health can be catastro-
phic to your overall health. The good news is there is hope for
those with any of the symptoms of poor digestion or those
diagnosed with these diseases. The path back to health can be
easily summarized but takes a lot of diligence. When it comes
to gut restoration, the 4R program is recommended: Remove,
Replace, Repopulate, and Repair.
Just like the blockage from a clogged pipe needs to be
removed for the pipe to flow properly again, the source of the
poor digestion needs to be identified and removed. The source
may be a pathogenic organism or allergic food. The second R
is that of Replace. Essential nutrients, such as digestive
enzymes may need to be replaced. The third element is
Repopulate: the gut needs to be repopulated with the proper
probiotics. The fourth R is that of Repair. The gut, especially
the intestinal lining needs to be repaired. One of the key sup-
plements for repairing the gut is glutamine. In addition to
probiotics, digestive enzymes, and glutamines that are part of
the 4R process; Omega 3 fatty oils and fiber are important for
maintaining good gut health.
If you want to learn more, please join us for an informative
seminar on gut health Tuesday April 28th at 7pm. I will be
going into much more detail about the gut and provide you
with the keys to gut health.

Abdominal Pain, Bloating, Constipation, Gas, Diarrhea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects
nearly 50 million Americans, or almost one in five! This challenging, painful condition begins before the age
of 35 for most people and is twice as common in women
as men. Although genetics and heredity play a part, no
one knows the exact cause of IBS.
The primary symptoms of IBS are abdominal pain and
bowel dysfunction including gas, diarrhea or consti-
pation, discomfort, bloating, and nausea. Certain be-
haviors will typically worsen IBS, including eating big
meals; taking large doses of medications; and consuming
wheat, milk products, chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol.
Stress is also an aggravator. Untreated, IBS can have
profound negative effects on the whole body.
For those impacted, medical solutions can be discourag-
ing. Few prescription drugs exist, and what is available
can have serious side effects. So, what can you do?
Chew – Proper chewing is the first step toward good di-
gestion.
Eat Right – Avoid ―trigger foods‖ and drink plenty of
water. Eliminate or reduce refined carbohydrates and
sugars.
Avoid Caffeine – Caffeine is a central nervous system
stimulant and will add stress to your whole body.
Steer Clear of Antacids – If you’re eating right, you
won’t have excess acid, so taking antacids won’t bring
relief.
Exercise – Exercise can help a myriad of problems, it
can even tone your intestines.
Take a Probiotic – The balance of good bacteria in your
body is essential for everyone (even if you don’t have
IBS). Did you know that 80% of your immune system is
located in your digestive system? Taking a probiotic sup-
plement daily will help to build the good bacteria in your
intestines. Stop in the pharmacy and ask us for more in-
formation.
Consider Iberogast – Iberogast is a liquid herbal rem-
edy that is used to treat IBS, Gastroesophageal Reflux
Disease (GERD), and Nonulcer Dyspepsia (NUD). We
have found this product improves digestion and helps
relieve symptoms like bloating, cramps, upper abdominal
pain, pressure or heaviness after eating, and heartburn.
Iberogast contains digestive stimulating substances
known as glucosinolates and cucurbitacins from clown's
mustard (Iberis amara) in a base of liquid extracts of
eight other herbs. This combination provides the maxi-
mum benefit to the entire intestinal tract and all without
any known side effects or drug interactions. And, the liq-
uid format makes it easy for the entire family to use, in-
cluding children.
Iberogast is available at Norland Avenue Pharmacy:
3.4 fluid ounces for $45.75. The
standard dosage for adults is 20
drops three times daily taken be-
fore or at meals with liquid (warm
water is recommended).
We believe Iberogast will work
for you. If this all natural
product does not meet your
expectations, bring it back
with your receipt and we will
gladly refund your money.

A Quality Choice
Biblical Health Tip…
Does the Bible Say Exercise is Worthless?
No! Here is what it says …
I Timothy 4:8 – For physical training is of some value, but
godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both
the present life and the life to come.
Physical exercise does not have eternal benefits as godly
exercises do, but physical exercise can improve the quality of
our lives here on earth.
Exercise is known to reduce high blood pressure – often a
forerunner of heart disease – and results in a bigger, stronger
heart. The more the heart or any muscle is exercised, the big-
ger and stronger it becomes. But don’t exercise beyond your
capacity, and never indulge in strenuous exercise too soon
after eating.
Nearly all types of pulmonary diseases, lung trouble, asthma,
tuberculosis and others are aggravated – if not caused – by
inactivity, lack of exercise, lack of fresh air and a lack of sun-
shine. Your body was built for activity, it wasn’t built just to
sit or lie around all day.
The sign on the wall told the simple story:
“Directions for Body Use: If left sitting too long,
will tend to sag and settle on its bottom. Shake well
daily in fresh air and sunshine.”
With aisles upon aisles of options and brands for over-the-
counter (OTC) medications and medicine cabinet sup-
plies, you might be wondering how to decide which prod-
ucts are best for your family.
