is locally grown and naturally ripened. Buying locallygrown food also helps conserve natural resources andhas a minimal effect on the environment. “Supporting local farmers markets enables us toproduce healthful food today and for generations tocome,” says registered dietitian nutritionist andAcademy spokesperson Libby Mills. Plan ahead when you shop locally. Bring a shop-ping list and purchase foods you know how to prepare. “Talk to your local farmers about less familiarfruits or vegetables,” encourages Mills. “They'll usual-ly be able to share how it's grown, what it tastes likeand several ways of preparing and serving the food.” Be sure to purchase ingredients for salads and pro-

Each year in Texas, more than half of drivers involved in deadly drunk drivingcrashes are between the ages of 17 and 34. With many college students and youngadults heading to spring break destinations in the coming weeks, the TexasDepartment of Transportation’s “Plan While You Can” campaign reminds them tomake a sober ride part of their festivities. “Enjoy spring break, but do so responsibly,” said TxDOT Executive DirectorJames Bass. “If you drink and drive, you run the very real risk of being killed ordestroying your future and the lives of others. It’s irresponsible and just not worthit.” During last year’s spring break in Texas, calculated between March 10 and 19,there were 410 crashes involving young drivers who were driving under the influ-ence of alcohol. Those crashes killed 20 people and seriously injured another 48. The “Plan While You Can” campaign includes a statewide tour featuring aninteractive dodgeball game where participants try to avoid incoming “beach balls”as virtual drinks are added to the screen. As more drinks are added, participantsexperience how drinking can slow their reaction times as on-screen avatars beginresponding more slowly to their players’ movements. The experience will visit eightTexas cities during March. While drivers under the influence of alcohol risk killing or seriously injuringthemselves or others, they also face up to $17,000 in fines and fees, jail time andloss of their driver’s license. Visit SoberRides.org to find alternatives to drinking and driving, such as: • Designating a sober driver • Calling someone for a sober ride home • Contacting a cab or ride-share service • Using mass transit • Spending the night at a safe destination

Home Care Assistance recognizes the impor-tance of providing seniors with the best quality oflife possible. They have found that seniors describequality of life as the ability to remain independentinside of their homes. Their integrated, science-based approach to supporting individual lifestylesand quality longevity, aims to achieve the independ-ence sought by seniors. Most studies on longevity have yielded fewclues to healthy aging; lifestyle and luck seem tofactor heavily into why people live into their 90sand 100s. Their genetic advantage may be that theyhave inherited fewer DNA variations that create arisk for heart disease, Alzheimer’s and other afflic-tions. More scientific research is now being done, fueled by genomics, to determine if the “secret” to along life lurks in our DNA. While research has yet to reveal what the genet-ic “secrets” to a long life might be, scientists areworking on it. Meanwhile, existing research doessupport the value of keeping both your mind andbody active with proper diet and nutrition, exercise, and other healthy habits, including staying sociallyengaged. Of course, there are no guarantees. Some of usmay be hardwired to live longer than others regard-less of what we do or don’t do, and those who aren’t,

Fireside LodgeHealthcare Center
Fireside Lodge is an icon in the healthcareindustry in Fort Worth. It is rooted in a 55-yeartradition of meeting the medical, emotional, phys-ical and intellectual needs of its residents.
Operating under the motto, “our family, takingcare of your family,” both the ownership and staffknow they are working in the resident’s home, asopposed to the resident living in their place ofwork. Senior care, Fireside’s proven specialtyover decades, is a rewarding field, and Firesidetakes great pride in being allowed to serve thesespecial members of the greater Fort Worth com-munity.
Founded by Dr. Thomas T. McGrath in 1962,the facility has been family-owned and family-operated since its inception. Fireside draws itsstrength from its longevity and the longevity of itsemployees, some who have attained 40 plus yearshere. This largely contributes to the exceptionalattention to detail and personalized care given toeach resident. Fireside is committed to providingtop-quality care at an affordable price – assuringthat residents are healthy, happy and satisfied.Fireside has been able to continue offering qualityservices such as clean facilities, organized activi-ties, large living spaces, exceptional nursing careand wholesome dining while keeping pricesattainable on a stretched budget.
