Grading Terms, Abbreviations and Values Used in Descriptions Centering and Gum
Margin width , centering and gum are graded accord ing to Scott Catalogue standards.
Extremely Fine (EF): Exceptionally large margins or near perfect centering. T he term "Gem" describes condition that is the finest possible for the issue.
Very Fine (VF) : Normal size margins for the issue and well-centered with the design a bit closer to one side.
Fine (F): Smaller than usual margins or noticeably off center. Pre-1S90 issues may have the design touched in places.
Very Good (VG): Attractive appearance, but margins or perforations cut into the design.
Good (G) or Average (Ave.): Cut into or perfs far into design and usually with sli ght fau lts. This condition is genera ll y acceptable for rarities, scarce mu ltip les or stamps used on unusual covers.

Disturbed Original Gum: Gum showing noticeable effects of humidity, climate or hinging over more than half of the gum. The significance of gum disturbance in va luing a sta mp in any of the Original Gum categories depends on the degree of disturbance, the rarity and normal gum condition of the issue and other variab les affecting quality. For example, stamps issued in tropical climates are expected to have some gum disturbance due to humidity, and such conditIon is not considered a negative factor in pricing.
Minor nicks , short edge tears, flap tears and slight reduction at one side are normal cond itions for 19th century envelopes. Folded letters should be expected to have at least one file fold. Light cleaning of covers and small mends along the edges are accepted forms of conservation. Unusual covers may have a common stamp with a slight crease or tiny tear. These flaws exist in vi rtually all 19th century covers and are not always described. They are not grounds for return.
Catalogue Values and Estimates
U nless otherwise noted , the currently avai lab le Scott Catalogue values are quoted in dollars with a decimal point. Other catalogues are often used for foreign countries or specia li zed areas and are referred to by their common name: Stanley Gibbons (SG), Dietz, American Air Mail Catalogue (AAMC), Michel, Zumstein, Facit, etc. Estimates are indicated with an "E. " and reflect our conservative valuation in do llars. Reserves will never exceed the low e nd of the estimate range; they will sometimes exceed Scott Catalogue value for stamps in Extremely Fine condition.
Because of certain pricing inconsistencies in the Scott Catalogue-for example , blocks that have no gum, the absence of premiums for Mint N.H. items, etc.-we cannot guarantee the accuracy of values quoted for multiples , specialized items and collection lots. We generally try to be conservative, but buyers may not return a lot because of a discrepancy in catalogue value due to Scott pricing inconsistencies.

Two classic books by award-winning author Jon Rose, devoted to the earliest and most popular U.S. stamps.
Jon Rose was recently named the recipient of the Carroll Chase cup by the U.S. Philatelic Classics Society for his authorship of United States Postage Stamps of 1869 and Classic United States Imperforate Stamps.
United States Postage Stamps of 1869 tells the complete story of our first pictorial stamps, our fLfst bicolored stamps and our first invert errors. Each of the eleven chapters explores a different denomination, including design origins, essays, proofs, specimen overprints, varieties, multiples, cancels, uses and reissues.
Classic United States Imperforate Stamps presents details about the first U.S. stamps, seven different designs introduced between 1847 and 1856. Because of the scarcity of the landmark reference books in this area, this volume provides an easy introduction to a rich and fascinating philatelic era.
Both books are generously illustrated in an 81/ 2- by II-inch softcover format and include helpful indexes.

VERY FINE AND BEAUTIFUL BLOCK. ONLY SIX USED BLOCKS OF THE 24-CENT 1869 ARE RECORDED, THIS BE I NG THE MOST ATTRACTIVE IN TERMS OF CANCELLATION , COLOR AND CENTERING. NO COMPLETELY SOUND BLOCKS ARE KNOWN.
The six recorded used blocks of the 24c 1869, not countin g the unique Invert block, are as follows (identified by last known pedigree): 1) Rose block, VF centering, fancy circle of V's ca ncel neatly struck on each stamp, 2) ex-Bechtel block, EF centering, circular cork ca ncels over each vignette, 3) ex-Ishikawa block, VF centering, heavy circle of wedges cance l, 4) ex-Anderson block, Fine cente rin g to top right, circle of wedges cancel, 5) ex-Klein block, Fine centerin g to left, quartered cork cancels, and 6) ex-Lopez block, perfs cutting in at right, cork cancels. All of the blocks have minor creases or small tears. T he Rose , Ishikawa and Bechtel blocks are the best centered and freshest of the group; the attractive geometric cance ls on the Rose block are , in our op inion, slightly more desirable than the cork cancels on the ex-Bechtel block.

T hi s cove r ori g in a ll y contained a second sheet date lin ed at Havan a o n February 20, 1870 , which we know from the receipt docketing on the inside flap . The outer address leaf is a printed notice of change in partnership at the H avana firm of Lago, Ziegler y Cia. It was carried o utside the ma ils by co urier from H a va na to New York o n board the Henry Chauncey, one of the commercia l vessels regularly plying the waters between Cu ba and th e Un ited States. The letter was undoubtedl y fra nked at Ha va na with the 10c and 24c 1869 stamps-ma n y business firms kept a supp ly of stamps o n hand for prepayment of postage on letters bound for the United States. The U.S .-Peru rate was lowered from 34c to 22c on February 16, 1870, due to the reduction of British postage from 12 pe nce to 6 pence for letters carr ied down th e west coast of South America by British packet. This change was evidently not kn ow n to the se nd e r in Hava na o n February 20th when the letter was franked. At New York the firm of J ose d e Rivera & Co. dated the le tte r with its blue ova l h an d stamp a nd put it into the mails with th e new ship d es ig nat io n "A laska ", bound for Pa nama.

FRESH AND EXTREMELY FINE COVER FROM THE FAMO US THOREL CORRESPONDENCE. ONLY TWO 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL COVERS TO JAPA N ARE RECORDED. ONE OF THE FI NEST OF ALL 60 KNOWN 30-CENT 1869 COVERS.
The postage and markings on this cover are unusual and invite analysis. The U.S. rate to Japan via England and Marseilles was dropped from 42c to 36c on January 1, 1870, and the U.S. share of postage was reduced from 10c to 4c. In this instan ce th e sender correctly prepaid the 42c rate via Marseilles, but for some unknown reason th e letter was marked with a "26" cent credit to England . The proper credit before and after January 1st was 32c, comprising 24c for England plus the 8c French fast transit rate for service via Marseilles . Observing the 26c cred it , the London exchange office marked the letter " Insuffic iently Stamped via Ma rseilles " . It arrived in London on Dec. 13, 1869, after making th e record-fast tra nsatlantic trip on the City of Brussels, and it co uld have made the December 17th sailing via Marseilles, but was held out due to th e underpaid cred it. The Hong Kong Feb. 12 rece iving backstamp confirms the delayed transit.
