7th Annual micro & Fast Gas Chromatography Symposium
7 Year Progress Report
Ultrafast GC: The Journey to Credibility
Ultrafast gas chromatography has come a long way since the first of these Gulf Coast Conference symposia seven years ago. From invention to patents to applications including an ASTM method, to the roll out to wineries, refineries, petrochemicals, chemicals and upstream to the wellhead, Ultrafast GC has become mainstream. In labs, online and even transportable platforms, the Ultrafast GC platform expansions including 16 meter column modules for up to 32 meters total length and the newest inventions enabling 3 different column types using a single switching valve broadens applications even more. This year the symposium will take a step back to make an assessment of the breadth and depth of applications and the developments making them possible.
Session Outline
• Introduction – 7 Year Progress Report – John Crandall, Falcon
• Chromperfect: Peak Integration? Of course but Automation, Software and Data Integration Too! – George Schreiner, Chromperfect
• Optimizing Gas Chromatography – Brian Rohrback, Infometrix
• Ultrafast Simulated Distillation in the Refinery Laboratory: The Skeptics become the Believers – Shauna Teclemariam, US Oil Refining Company
• Long column technology, gasoline, pesticides – Derrick Saul, Falcon
• 3 columns, two module applications – Nate Caton
• Low concentrations using GS-T – Matt Holliday, Derrick Saul, Falcon (presenter)

Industrial Process
Wide Range of Applications – Wide range of Locations
• Industrial Process – Tucked in the Pipes• Extractive sampling very near the sample point
• Trace level measurements
• Condensation issues
• Reactivity issues
• Industrial Laboratory• Quick response to process changes
• Endpoint detection
• Process Validation
• Transportable• Fraud detection
• Regulatory compliance
• Short term composition survey campaigns
Onsite Composition SurveyNovember 28, 2017
• Initial sample line insulation was inadequate• The water vapor was
clearly condensing and could be seen periodically “burping” from the stainless steel connections into the clear Teflon tubing
• Chromatography was consistent with the condensate problem
• Corrective action was taken as shown next
Onsite InstallationNovember 28, 2017
• Heat tracing was added up to the sample valve• There were still cold
spots causing condensation
• The water “burp” frequency and impact was reduced
• We expect a properly implemented permanent sample system will remove this issue

• Notes• The high boilers were
easily integrated along with the other components of interest
• Baseline assignments are done automatically
• Color flooded peaks correlate to legacy values
