The Scout GroupOn June 7th 2011 the Scout Group attain its 50th year of serving the young people of Lichfield. We continue to grow and are currently welcoming 137 Young People through our doors each week. This is an increase from 131 in 2009/2010 and 119 in 2008/2009. This positions us as the largest Scout Group in Lichfield District and the second largest in Staffordshire County. We are currently working to capacity in all sections and beyond capacity in some. Our Beaver waiting list is also very healthy with 77 young children patiently waiting for the opportunity to join us. 2011 sees the Group remaining in the same safe hands as last year with no changes taking place in the leadership of the Group or in the Group Executive.

REPORT.CHAIRMAN’S

As Chairman and as a parent I must say that we are all greatly indebted to all our Leaders and their Assistants who lead our young people into many diverse adventures. The level of commitment and the number of hours that they dedicate to this Scout Group is an inspiration to us all.

We continue to invest in our leaders with £560 spent last year on training and a further £800 budgeted for next year. We are also increasing the level of insurance for those leaders who are involved in adventurous activities so they are better covered in the event of an accident.

The SectionsEach young person in the group has had access to a wide and varied choice of exciting activities throughout the year. The accompanying individual section reports give you a good flavour of the type of activities your child can look forward to enjoying as they progress through the Group. We can indeed be very proud of the high standard of adventurous activities that we offer.

Congratulations must go to the Jamboree Scouts that I told you about last year. Through their own hard work and that of their Fundraising Committee they have successfully raised the funds necessary for their Jamboree visit.

Media, Branding and CommunicationsWe have worked hard this year to improve the way that we communicate with our membership, particularly the new members of the Group who may not be familiar with our ways. We have developed a new Welcome Pack and Folder which incorporates a large Frequently Asked Questions section to provide all the information that our new members may need. We are also now issuing new Beavers with the ‘Beaver Handbook’, free of charge, to ensure that they have the best possible chance of making a flying start within the Group.

We also enjoyed an overhaul of our ‘corporate look’ by a professional design agency and we now sport a dynamic new Group Logo and Activity Logo on our printed media. As you can see from this report and from the recent first issue of our new-look Newsletter, our output is now very professional indeed.

All of the above services were performed free of charge by local design agency ‘Igloo57’ and special thanks must go to Mark Rogers for generously donating his time and efforts to the Group.

This new look also runs into our new Group Website which has now gone live! Our thanks to Marc Henson for the many hours he has dedicated to making this happen. You can visit the website at the usual address of www.7thlichfield.org.uk where you will soon see regular news articles and information from the Group leadership.

Members of the Group have been prominent in the news this year. Particular praise must go to Jack and David Taylor who caused quite a media stir by becoming the first twins to complete all 33 Cub Activity badges, earning them a spot on TV courtesy of Central News. We also gained TV coverage by being the first Group to have Scouts who earned the new Entrepreneurs Badge. Those successful Scouts were treated to a helicopter ride as a reward for their efforts!

7th HeadquartersSome failings in our electrical installation became apparent this year therefore some re-wiring and earth bonding work was completed at the turn of the year. This was the only significant expense incurred by our premises, all other work being minor maintenance items.

2011 has seen the continuation of the Cleaning Team - a group of a dozen or so volunteers who, by helping just once a year, keep our HQ clean and tidy. Again, my thanks to them.

FinancesOur finances continue to remain in very good health. As you can see from the accompanying Treasurer’s Report we suffered some unexpected expenditure on our electrical installation and some lost paddlesports equipment that we were obliged to replace. However this was more than offset by the superb revenues generated by our Pig Roasts, by our Paddlesports Sessions and by a lower than budgeted expenditure on capital items.

Thanks go to our Treasurer Andy Cross for the hard work and patience he has shown in his first year managing the purse-strings. Taken as a whole the Group ‘turns-over’ approximately £49k each year and Andy has overseen this financial traffic most admirably.

Once again, I am grateful for the efforts of Linda Whitehead and her team who run our very successful annual pig roasts at the Lichfield Festival Market and at the Whittington Fayre. Linda and her team managed to improve on the record takings of the previous year by raising an incredible £2,775 for the Scout Group. Of course we couldn’t manage without all the willing helpers from the parents and our thanks go to you all. I can’t emphasise enough how important the Pig Roasts are to the ongoing health of the Group

Finances and I hope that we can rely on your help in the years to come and keep this remarkable fundraising effort going!

Special thanks also to go Paul Creaser and his Paddlesports Team. By coordinating and leading paddlesports sessions for other Scout Groups within Lichfield District they not only gave hundreds of kids the chance to ‘go on the water’ but also raised some £1,700 for the benefit of the entire Group.

Our subscription charge remained at £27 per quarter in financial year 2010/2011 and will remain at this rate for the financial year 2011/2012.

The CommunityWe have maintained our profile in the community by taking part in regular events such as the monthly family service at St Michael’s on Greenhill, the annual St George’s Day and Remembrance Sunday parades and services at the Cathedral. We were also to be seen out and about supporting the Lichfield Bower and helping out at the Lichfield 10K running race. The Jamboree Scouts were out and about at many community events this year performing BBQ’s and Pig Roasts as part of their fundraising efforts.

To ConcludeYou can measure the success of a Scout Group in many ways. The number of Young People attending is one way, the diverse range of activities we offer those Young People is another. The breadth and depth of the resources we can call on, be they human or financial, is yet another. Whichever way you measure success though, you can only conclude that for 7th Lichfield Scout Group our 50th year is our best year ever. Through the sum of the efforts of all those who work for the Group now, and all those who have served Scouting at 7th Lichfield in the past 50 years, we find ourselves in a most enviable position. We have attained a critical mass, a terminal velocity if you like. We are literally bursting at the seams with Young People and Leaders alike and have more knocking at our door than we can possibly accommodate. How can we possibly improve on this? Well, we have some big ideas up our sleeves, but that is all I can say at the moment!

REPORT.TREASURER’S

7TH LICHFIELD GROUP ANNUAL REPORT 2010/201106.

1. SUBSCRIPTIONS NET OF CAPITATION £7,833 (LAST YEAR £5,232 ) We currently have around 130 children in the six colonies, packs and troops. The subs have flowed in well this year due to the standing order system which is proving to be an easy and efficient way to collect the subscriptions.

As last year, £30 from the £108 yearly subs is given to each group to fund activities.

There is no need to increase subs this year.

Capitation is the cost to the group of being part of the Scouting movement, payable annually to Lichfield District Scout Council, and calculated by reference to the size of the group. This year the figure was £4,675. Our local levies have been held at last year’s level but there was a 75p per member increase in the National Levy. The overall cost is £27.50 per member.

2. BANK INTEREST RECEIVED £4.17 (LAST YEAR £4) Due to low interest rates we again earned minimal interest on funds held in a deposit account.

3. DONATIONS RECEIVED £1,652 (LAST YEAR £4,456) This year donations returned to the norm after a bumper crop last year.

Donations were received as follows:

Use of the hut as a polling station £100 Private donation (gift aid form completed) £300 St Michael’s PTA BBQ £30 Pampered Chef Evening £80 Lichfield Bower £132 Lichfield 10k £150 Baron Davenports £800 Lichfield Lantern Parade £100 Parent donation £ 10

4. CAMPS & ACTIVITIES NET OUTGOINGS £2,470 (LAST YEAR NET OUTGOINGS £2,508) Camps (net outgoings £1,020) This included a number of camps of all styles for Cubs and Scouts troops, 3 Beavers’ sleepovers and the family camp at Shugborough (June 2010).

Activities (net outgoings £1,390) This included activities such as visits to places of interest, scuba diving, sailing/kayaking, laser quest, climbing and abseiling in addition to weekly activities at the hut.

Unfortunately, we had to contribute £400 to Cannock Scouts following the loss of two canoes, which we had hired and which went missing from the trailer in transit.

5. FUNDRAISING NET INCOME £4,007 (LAST YEAR NET INCOME £3,522) As you will be aware, last year we bought a new pig roaster. It has proved to be a good investment and the two main pig roasts at the Lichfield Festival Market and Whittington Fair again showed healthy returns, although the market was quieter than in previous years which affected the overall income. The combined net income from both events was £2,775. We have secured our pitch for both events this year and would welcome your support to ensure their success.

Other fundraising income was as follows:

Hire of skittle alley £45 Boswell Scout troop shoeshine £555 Johnson Scout Troop bag pack £1165 Johnson Scout Troop car wash £127 AGM Barbeque/Social events £225

During the year the group continued to earn commission on purchases made on-line with a number of major retailers using the Easyfundraising website. £38 was received during the year. Regrettably this is down on last year, and I would urge anyone making purchases to consider using this site as the returns to the group on purchases can be significant, at little cost to you.

6. GIFT AID INCOME £2,716 (LAST YEAR £2,720) This was in respect of the gift aid claim for the tax year 2009/10.

Due to reductions in tax rates your taxed pound will not be quite so valuable through Gift Aid, but it still represents a good source of additional ‘painless’ revenue.

7. OTHER INCOME £0 (LAST YEAR £216)

8. PREMISES EXPENSES £2,954 (LAST YEAR £3,011) Headquarters rent and rates costs remained relatively stable. We continue to insure the Scout HQ and the group’s equipment with Scouts Insurance Services Ltd.

9. DONATIONS £164 (LAST YEAR £70) We made a donation of £100 to 9th Saxon Hill Scouts towards a sponsored walk and a contribution to the Jamboree Scouts of £64 which was taken from the profits of last year’s AGM.

Page 8: 7th Annual Report 2010-11

REPORT.TREASURER’S

10. ADMIN/ESTABLISHMENT EXPENSES £639 (LAST YEAR £294) The significant increase in this area is due to the funds we have set towards the purchase of our new corporate stationery (£376).

11. REFURBISHMENT £2,012 (LAST YEAR £183) Regrettably, this year we have had to have some unplanned electrical maintenance in the hut. This amounted to £1,948, accounting for the increase in this area.

12. CAPITAL EQUIPMENT £2,044 (LAST YEAR £8,933)Following last years major spending on capital equipment including the pig roaster, this year we have been much more modest in our purchasing. Kayaking Equipment £817 Patrol Boxes £209 Watersport Equipment £149 Battery, solar panel £149 Other equipment and camping supplies £230

13. PURCHASE OF UNIFORMS & BADGES £766 (LAST YEAR £865)

14. SUNDRY PAYMENTS £1,158 (LAST YEAR £1,568) Sundry payments include training costs (£400) related to canoe leaders’ course. A further £120 related to another training course. Other costs (£588) include expenses such as the hut fire inspection, servicing the trailer and other general expenses not individually analysed.

15. SUMMARY Once again we have come to the year end and find our finances in a very healthy state. We finished the year with £14,649 in the bank, compared with an opening balance of £9,988 at 1st April 2010. Prudent financial management and a lack of major capital spending accounted for the increase in our funds.

We also saw a significant increase in our income from Paddlesports where other districts pay us for use of our equipment and leadership. Many thanks to Paul Creaser and his team for all the efforts they devote to this area.

Receipts totalled £34,203 (last year £32,649) Payments totalled £29,542 (last year £33,448)

The accounts presented at the AGM show receipts and payments of the whole group and will be independently checked before being filed with the Charities Commission.

BUDGET FOR 2011/12 A prudent view has been taken of overall income, with only regular fundraising activities included.

We have set aside £3,000 to begin a programme of ongoing renewal of consumable equipment such as climbing ropes and other climbing equipment, which have pre-determined life spans. We hope this will create a rolling programme of replacement and maintenance.

Other than that we have made adjustments to spending to take account of inflation and potentially higher insurance costs.

Blink, and another year has flown by with the Beavers!

7th Lichfield Beavers have had a hectic year since

the last AGM. We managed to have three sleepovers

(one directly after last year’s AGM, one in September

and then one in March), which were brilliant fun and

were wholeheartedly embraced by all the Beavers who

went on them! We will be having our next sleepover on

Saturday, so the Beavers are hoping for good weather

this weekend, not just for the AGM.

7TH LICHFIELD GROUP ANNUAL REPORT 2010/2011 11.

Last year also saw us meeting up with other colonies at the Beaver District Day at Beaudesert in July and then at another District Day at Snibston Science and Discovery Centre in Coalville.

The colonies do do their own things in the week of course! Paget’s have had a fun year out and about den building, pond dipping, going on walks, playing wide games and all the fun “outdoorsy” things that we do with the Beavers in the Summer. Then as Winter drew in, we visited the Fire and Police Stations (no Beavers were kept in the cells!) and then of course it was Christmas Party Time! In the New Year, the theme was Saints and Sinners (rather apt for the Beavers) with us celebrating the various Saints Days/ New Years that occur during the term, finishing with a joint outing with Brown Colony to the Snowdome.

Brown Beavers spent last summer out and about too. We have walked at Leomansley woods and Darnford Park.

We quizzed round town and finished with a meal in McDonalds. We all got wet at our end of summer waterfight though the leaders seemed slightly wetter than the beavers for some reason. I can’t think why... Nik taught us about Eid before she left us at Christmas and we would like to thank her for her contribution. Reverend Deborah came and showed us the tools of her trade and explained her role in the community. We had a visit from a combat medic and great fun was had working out what went in all his pouches and bandolier. There were fireworks for bonfire night and we all enjoyed serving tea to the Mums for Mothering Sunday .

This term also saw the return of an old friend to the colony and it was fantastic to see Cath Babington with a 7th necker on again. As is usual, half our beavers have gone up to cubs this year and it has been great to see and hear how well they have been doing and also to welcome new beavers to the colony and give them their first taste of Scouting.

So, a great year

for the 7th Beavers, let’s hope that 2011/2012 is as

exciting and fun!

Phew! Rowallan Cubs have had another very

eventful year with the hard-working: Jo Docker,

Richard Howell and also myself, being joined by new

enthusiastic and talented leaders, Graham Finch and

Theodora Andrew. The leadership has endeavoured

to continue to provide as fulfilling and exciting a

programme as possible for all the cubs.

CUB PACK.ROWALLAN

A wide range of activities has been enjoyed by our cubs: from making bird feeders and grass heads, to creating electro-magnets, candles and employing scientific skills in making our very own instant ice cream! We have also aimed at improving the cubs’ basic scouting skills, with bivvy building, knot-tying evenings and examining effective fire building (on which we then cooked our own bread twists). Outdoor and physical activities have included kayaking, night hikes, treasure hunts, swimming evenings and a visit to Esporta Health Club. Rowallan cubs have also organised a number of visits during the year which have included a trip to RAF Cosford, a tour of Tamworth Police Station and watching the Christmas pantomime - Peter Pan at the Garrick - followed by a back stage tour (ohhh yes we did..!)

In addition, there have been several events that Rowallan have been involved with. During the last year, the cubs have attended the County Cub Camp at Beaudesert, October Camp at Drum Hill and the District Cub Quiz, Swimming and Football Competitions. The camps have included such activities as: climbing, abseiling, backwoods cooking, caving, and archery. Many of these activities would not be possible for the cubs, if it wasn’t for the continued support and expertise of other leaders and also in many instances, young explorer leaders from the other sections within the 7th Group.

We said fond farewells to a number of cubs as they moved on, a number of who have achieved their Silver Awards beforehand; we wish them well in their move to scouts. However, their places continue to be filled by up-coming beavers, as well as some new additions to the group, since the 7th continues to attract new members.

Last, but not least, Rowallan leaders would like to express our huge appreciation of everyone who has supported the group during the year, such as all of the young leaders from Explorers, parent helpers and the dedicated work of our badge ladies, Stephanie Warwick, Sarah Beene and previously Ann Pearsall. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

First of all, I would like to say a very big thank you to all those

who have helped the pack over the last 12 months, especially

assistant leaders Pete Stanton, Vanya Rogers, Fiona Taylor and

Nick Tinsdeall. In addition, many thanks to our team of badge

ladies, namely Rachel Bentley, Michelle Holt and Denise

Baker who give their time once a month to help the cubs gain

their activity badges. Also, a very big thank you to Justin Holt

who has given up so much of his time over the past few weeks

and done a fantastic job ‘mixing’ the music for our 1970’s

presentation at the AGM.

CUB PACK.MACLEAN

I am pleased to report that Wednesday’s Maclean Cub Pack have, once again, maintained a full pack ranging between 24 and 28 Cubs throughout the past 12 months.

Along with Tuesday’s Rowallan Cub Pack, we took 40 Cubs to the County Cub Camp at Beaudesert Scout campsite, in July 2010. The cubs slept under canvas and took part in a wide range of activities such as water slides, circus skills and funfair bases alongside the more traditional scouting skills of backwoods cooking, pioneering, and shelter building. We also went on a weekend pack holiday in October, in indoor accommodation at Drum Hill campsite, Derbyshire, where the cubs took part in activities such as archery, abseiling, climbing, orienteering, low ropes and assault courses.

In addition to the camps, Maclean Pack’s other outdoor activities have included kayaking and bell boating at Manor Park Sailing Club, Kings Bromley, Bivvy building in Hopwas Wood with a Cub pack from Tamworth, a night hike from Curborough to Streethay, a walk around Chasewater, a ghost tour of Lichfield and a train & chip trip to Sutton Coldfield. We have also attended both the Remembrance Day and St. George’s day Parades through Lichfield City Centre and on to the Cathedral.

In September, Maclean Pack entered a team in the District Seven a side football tournament at the Ridgeway Primary school in Burntwood. Even though we only had 5 players, we still managed to finish runners up in the tournament, narrowly losing to the 6th Lichfield in the final. Congratulations to Chris Martinez, Brody Rogers, Chris Buck, Alex Buck and William Playle-de Vries.

The cubs have worked hard over the last 12 months by gaining their Global, Community, and Outdoor Challenge badges. Also, as a pack, we have completed the Athlete, Astronomer and Scientist activity badges. Many thanks to Denise Baker who helped with the Scientist badge.

Congratulations to David and Jack Taylor who became the first set of twins in the country to gain all 33 Cub activity badges. Their story was covered by both the local and national press and there was even a TV appearance on Central News.

Furthermore, over the last 12 months, 8 of our older cubs gained their Chief Scout’s Silver Award (the highest award in the cub section). Congratulations to Alex Brookes, Adam Holt, Joe Bentley, Nick Baker, Josh Clayton, Brody Rogers, Hannah Evans and Will Whitehead.

Yours, in Scouting,

RussI am looking forward

to another fun and

rewarding year, with

the cubs enjoying new

experiences, activities

and adventures and

hopefully gaining even

more badges and awards.

Page 16: 7th Annual Report 2010-11

The last 12 months have flown by with

many excellent troop nights, events and

nights away. So what were the highlights…

TROOP.BOSWELL

May 2010Milldale Troop Camp near Northwich went really well. The 3 patrols had a fantastic pitch by the river enabling the inevitable water game onslaught to take place. Other activities such as shooting, troop hike, expedition cooking, wide games and a pig roast (please note that the pig was not shot as part of our shooting!) kept us busy.

June 2010Beaudesert District Camp allowed us to join forces with other troops as part of an activity camp with an Expedition theme with bases on; Navigation, Kit, Cooking, First Aid, Leadership, Planning and more. We even got to see England game in the World Cup on big screen. Now that’s modern camp gear for you!!

July 2010Six mad weeks of Kayaking, Canoeing, Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing and Hiking filled our summer. We were runners up in the District 6 aside. Molwyns Lightweight Wild Camp in Wales was an expedition of 2 extremes. Dry climb up Cnict, ‘the welsh matterhorn’, on the Saturday with subsequent paddle in sunshine but a wet Sunday with rivers in flood on the Sunday. The boys could not believe mountain weather could be so different in 12 hours!

August 2010Thornthwaite Troop Summer Camp in West Yorks enabled 2 patrols to live under canvas for a whole week. Packed into the week was Local patrol hikes, backwoods cooking, swimming, day out in York, wide games, crossbows, joint campfire with Blackpool troop, indoor bouldering and outdoor climbing. Extreme adventure!

September 2010Raft building followed by District Water Day at Manor Park. Rafts or Submarines? I’m not sure but great fun.

October 2010Expedition Bike & Hikes in White peak was a challenging weekend. Travelling over long distances on Bike from Hostel to Camping Barn on the Saturday and then Hiking to the finish on Sunday really tested their metal. Great effort!

November 2010Bonfire night at Beaudesert allowed us to see a tremendous fireworks display. Hot dogs were not bad either!

Swimming Gala was fantastic for Boswell as we successfully defended our title in both the relay and overall competition. Get in there! The hat trick is on this year!

December 2010The legendary Big Chip Shop Challenge and Fire Station visit kept us out and about even in the depths of winter.

January 2011The start of 2011 saw us at Laserzone for our be-lated official Christmas Party. Chaos! That Glyn Thomas is one mean shot!

February 2011PL’s and APL’s Training Day at Sutton Park gave a chance for our junior leaders to learn some new scouting/coaching skills in the art of Navigation. The Aviators badge run by Glyn and Mike went down (no pun intended) really well.

March 2011The highlight for me was Thomas Salmon & Robin Mills receiving their Chief Scouts Gold Award at the Guild Hall.

April 2011District Quiz had a great turnout. After many questions on Scouting and other subject matter Boswell masterminds came out on top. Shoe shine fundraising raised over £600 over the two weekends with Jack Taylor and Stephen Little raising £300 on their own. Fantastic team and individual efforts.

May 2011This month see’s the start of change in Boswell Troop with a big increase in numbers up from Cubs and a new chapter with girls joining Boswell ranks for the first time. New challenges for all!

So what a great year for the Troop! But don’t take my word for it – just look at the smiling photo’s.

The past twelve months have been yet another

incredible Scouting year! With a total of over 290

nights away between all the Scouts out of a total

seven possible Troop residential experiences

(camps or sleepovers etc!) and others, as well as

more adventurous activities than ever, the troop

continues to go from strength to strength!

TROOP.JOHNSONWe have offered the following activities (to name but a few!): walking, orienteering, wide games, kayaking, canoeing, bell boating, wind surfing, mountain biking, climbing (indoors and out on natural rock), abseiling, town trails, cooking on fires, raft building, circus skills, rifle shooting, laser quest, pioneering, camping, ‘expeditioning’, swimming, scuba diving and recently geo caching which is bringing us into the 21st Century in full swing!!...... Might be easier to ask what we don’t do!

To support our active programme we have raised money from two bag packs (where we try and make sure the Scouts appreciate that putting potatoes on top of eggs isn’t ideal!), helping with the North Lichfield Lantern parade and helping at the Lichfield 10k run! This has enabled us to offer lots of our activities at a superb cost for the Scouts. Thank you to all those who attended these activities.

Lots of Scouts have achieved awards and challenges, including many Outdoor, Adventure, Global, Promise, Outdoor Plus and Creative challenges so well done to all! We don’t spend a lot of time dedicated to “badge work” but through our “balanced” active programme we end up ticking lots of boxes so the Scouts can gain badges and awards. Well done to all who have achieved more badges which need sewing on!

Thanks to all our formidable leadership team of Mark, Simon, Mike, Alex, Phil and Nick - we couldn’t do half as much as we do without any of you. Our hearty thanks also to Adrian Grew, Rob Slater, Vicky Wills, Ed Wills, Chris Gaunt and all the others who have also made greatly appreciated contributions during the year.

Well done to all our Scouts – without you we wouldn’t have a Troop! You are all fantastic individuals who will undoubtedly go on to do great things in life.

You all have different strengths and weaknesses, and we hope to assist you in getting the most out of life that you can.

If you have any questions please see one of our leaders any time – we will be pleased to discuss our active programme (one of the most active in the County we think) with anyone!

Yours, in Scouting,

Paul CreaserScout Leader - Johnson Troop

Thanks to all our formidable

leadership team.
