AMERICAN INSPIRATION FOR TEENS

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS: 425 YEARS OLD AND ALWAYS INNOVATING!

COLLINS COBUILD DICTIONARIES

(VIRGÍNIA GALVÃO – MACMILLAN) American Inspiration for Teens is a motivating and sophisticated six-level English course that takes teenage students from beginner to intermediate level. The material evolves with its students and the different topics reflect teenagers' changing needs and interests. The cross-curricular syllabus offers a wealth of stimulating materials relevant to the student's lives, while grammar is presented through engaging texts and dialogues. Consolidation and extension activities are designed for mixed-ability groups, with creative project work, authentic songs and games.

(GILMAR D. DA SILVA MATTOS – CCBEU - FRANCA)Having learned more about Web 2.0 and web tools to enhance the teaching/learning process, it suddenly dawned on me everything I had seen so far was nothing but a piece of sky. In this presentation, I'll be sharing my personal experience with this endeavor and show some projects I've been involved with.

(LYLE G. FRENCH – PEARSON LONGMAN)Assessment is at the heart of teaching. It is what provides teachers with clear direction to measure and obtain their goals. In this plenary we will examine the types of assessment, how to use them so that they can yield reliable information about ELL's, and how to ensure that assessment is responsive to the needs of our students.

(DANIEL DUARTE – CAMBRIDGE)thIn 2009 Cambridge University Press celebrates its 425 anniversary: 425 years of experience, hard work and

inspiration to bring you the best in ELT. The Press aims at maintaining and extending its age-old reputation for high quality and technological innovations to meet the need of its customers. So, what is there for you? What is new? Come and find out during this session!

(RAFAEL REIS – CENGAGE)With innovations such as DefinitionsPLUS and vocabulary builders, the Collins COBUILD Dictionaries transform the learner's dictionary from an occasional reference into the ultimate resource and must-have dictionary for language learners. The definitions have been created using a controlled vocabulary, and each definition has been reviewed by a team of classroom teachers to ensure that they are appropriate for learners at different levels.

(HELMARA FEBELIANA REAL DE MORAES – U.S. CONSULATE GENERAL )This workshop aims at presenting an overview on Corpus Linguistics, a new way of studying and teaching a foreign language, with some theoretical information and suggestions on different activities the teacher can develop to work in the classroom, independent of students' level.

(CARLOS GONTOW – MACMILLAN / ALUMNI)"If you keep doing what you've always been doing, you're going to keep getting what you've always been getting." Being creative is a key element to motivate and involve your students in the English class. In this plenary session, we will experience creative ways to work with grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. We are going to work on activities for all age groups and all levels of proficiency. Use your creativity and turn your class into an exciting adventure of limitless possibilities and continuous success.

(FABIO LUIZ AND MAKOTO YAMAMOTO – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)10% inspiration, 90% desperation. That's how we feel when we do have wonderful ideas but, for some reason, they are not applied. This workshop will make your dreams come true using little work, simple material, and a lot of “cre-activity”.

DIGITAL NATIVISM: MYTH OR REALITY IN TODAY´S EFL LEARNING CONTEXT?

EFL TEACHING COMPETENCY PROFILES

EFL VERSUS L1 WRITING INSTRUCTION: CONVERGENCES AND DIVERGENCES

FLAPPING IN ESL BRAZILIAN ENGLISH

(ELYSIO SOARES SANTOS JUNIOR – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)Nowadays, more and more teachers are pushed to deal with technology in the classroom; however, are Brazilian students digital natives as adolescents in developed countries are believed to be? This paper raises this issue while fostering a reflective teaching praxis.

(ISABELA VILLAS BOAS – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)In March I had the pleasure to participate in an English Fellow Program called EFL Educators Workshop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and organized by Georgetown University. Eighteen participants from sixteen developing countries from all corners of the world had the chance to experience an enriching program that consisted primarily of educational visits. The purpose of this presentation is to provide a useful description of the program. While the content of the presentation is not of immediate application, participants will nonetheless have a chance to be better informed about the different types of ESL programs in the United States and their characteristics, strengths and weaknesses.

(KÁTIA FALCOMER – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)This paper aims at presenting the results of a study which dealt with the investigation of the EFL teaching competencies of a group of public school teachers from Secretaria de Educação do Distrito Federal. They participated in a continuing education course offered in a partnership project between a Binational Center in Brasília and The Embassy of The United States of America.

(ISABELA VILLAS BOAS – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)This paper describes an educational ethnography with teenage intermediate-level learners in an ELT Institution. The goal was to document and analyze the learners' writing development in a genre-based, social-interactional and process-oriented approach, and compare it to these learners' writing instruction in their native language, in their various schools. The presenter reports the year-long research that resulted in her doctoral dissertation, defended last November.

(CLAUDIO AZEVEDO – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)th thThis presentation is the final sequel of the 5 and 6 CTJ Seminars' workshops, with a number of brand new

movie segments to assess beginners and basic grammar goals and tips to develop your own video activities with the DVDs you have at home.

(CLAUDIO AZEVEDO – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)th thThis presentation is the final sequel of the 5 and 6 CTJ Seminars' workshops, with a number of brand new

movie segments to assess intermediate and advanced grammar goals and tips to develop your own video activities with the DVDs you have at home.

(MICHEL HERNANE NORONHA PIRES – CULTURA INGLESA – BELO HORIZONTE)Flapping is one of the main phonological features of North-American English. The aim of the paper is to identify all major environments in which flapping occurs in the speech of Brazilian learners of English and compare them to American English in order to make teachers and students aware of possible mistakes.

(PAULO LIMA – IBEU – RIO DE JANEIRO)Paulo Lima will be sharing some ideas of why and how to use projects in the classroom, for he truly believes students' learning process can be focused on meaningful activities in which relevant learning occurs through participation in challenging and motivating projects dealing with real world issues.

GET UP AND GO!

GRAMMAR IN A COMMUNICATIVE CURRICULUM

IF THE SHIP SINKS, THAT'S O.K. I HAVE THE SURVIVAL KIT!

INSIGHTS ON THE LEXICAL APPROACH

INTEGRATING TECHNOLOGY INTO THE CLASSROOM FOR YOUNG LEARNERS

(JULIETTA SCHOENMANN – OXFORD)It's one thing to motivate our learners, but how do we motivate ourselves? A good teacher's guide is often at the heart of this process, offering you backup in the classroom, which then frees you up to attend to all your other professional needs. This talk explores teacher development and highlights the various directions we can go in so as to learn from our own experience and improve our teaching skills.

(JULIETTA SCHOENMANN – OXFORD)Are your learners lacking motivation? Do you feel they are not fulfilling their potential? This talk explores ways in which we can add vitality and bring motivation through the wealth of material available in class. Ranging across the four skills, as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, we explore how to get the very best out of your learners.

(AMANDA BRADFORD – ENGLISH LANGUAGE FELLOW - PA)With the adoption of the communicative approach into language education, where meaning and function is primary, teachers sometimes struggle with how to incorporate the teaching of grammar into the curriculum. This lecture dispels the misconception that a communicative curriculum means one without the inclusion of grammar. The lecturer will discuss several ways in which grammar can be incorporated into a communicative curriculum in meaningful ways in order to enhance students' language development. Communicative activities with a grammar focus that address all four language skills – speaking, reading, writing and listening – will be discussed.

(MARINA BRAZIL AND VINÍCIUS VIEIRA LEMOS – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)If you are tired of the same old warmers, games and activities, this is the right session for you! Learn creative news ideas to spice up your classes and involve your students in fun activities dealing with different skills and grammar topics.

(VICTOR JATOBÁ BOTELHO AND VINICIUS VIEIRA LEMOS – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)“My students are wild, never speak English and get bad grades.” Does that sound familiar? Share your experience and learn valuable tips on how to improve classroom management and dynamics. Small changes can make a great difference! Highly recommended for novice teachers.

(ELTON CARVALHO AND THELMA PERES – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)Based on the Lexical Approach, the presenters provide teachers with different techniques on how to teach vocabulary more effectively.

(ANA MARIA SCANDIUZZI AND DOMINGOS DI LELLO – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)Children are born with a digital chip. Are you ready to cope with the young learners' technological interests and needs? Let's share ideas for tasks and uses of technological tools and resources to promote interactivity, enthusiasm and learning, as well as to improve the quality and effectiveness of our lessons.

(MARIA DA LUZ SILVA DELFINO – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)This workshop will provide interactive resources and strategies designed to motivate student reading interest. Readers are to predict, create characters, imagine new endings, make illustrations, and use visuals, such as graphic organizers and maps to increase comprehension. Readers will learn strategies which can be immediately implemented in the classroom.

(DANIEL ERIJO – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)This presentation aims at demonstrating some useful techniques in carrying out conversation classes. It also focuses on the use of short video segments in harnessing students' listening abilities and stimulating interesting conversation.

(ROGÉRIO EMILIANO DE ASSIS - CILSob AND NEUDA A. DO LAGO - UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE GOIÁS)We teachers have often been prepared to pass our subject along to students. However, our audience receives this knowledge with apathy instead of enthusiasm. We live in times of significant unrest. Apathy is the word usually used to describe families and nations. This workshop aims at providing some ways we can weave humanistic activities into our materials.

(DENISE DE FELICE, KATY COX AND LUCIA SANTOS – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)Museums are no longer passive repositories of artifacts and fossils. Participants in this active and interactive language workshop will experience cultural aspects which will inform and engage virtual visitors in reactions to cultural stimulations through videos.

(MARGARETE DE OLIVEIRA AND PATRICIA FAUSTINO – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)Motivation provides the first drive to initiate learning a foreign language and later the force to sustain the learning process. In this discussion group, the teachers will present recent studies on motivation and invite participants to discuss strategies to be used in their own language classrooms.

(AMANDA BRADFORD – ENGLISH LANGUAGE FELLOW - PA)Pair work and group work often play an important role in the communicative language classroom. However, making pair work and group work really work and be effective can be a real challenge for teachers. This lecture will first discuss why pair work and group work should be included in the language curriculum. Second, it will address the challenges to its implementation and offer strategies for overcoming them in the language classroom. Examples of effective pair and group work exercises for all different levels will be discussed.

(CLAUDILENE SIQUEIRA GOMES MOREIRA – BRAZILIAN ENGLISH COURSE)Is it true that the motivation students take to class is the biggest single factor affecting their success? It is known that motivation is some kind of internal drive that encourages somebody to carry on. If we perceive an attractive goal, we will be strongly motivated to do whatever is necessary to reach that goal. But what kind of motivation do language learners have? What can teachers do, in theory and in practice, to arouse learners' interest and to maintain motivation?

(ALINE GOMES DA SILVA - UNVERSIDADE ESTADUAL DE GOIÁS / LISA STEMBEL - PRACTICAL ENGLISH COURSE)With its magical power of awakening people's memories and feelings, music can be an effective educational resource because it helps learners acquire vocabulary and grammar, develop linguistic skills and it gives the learner the opportunity to establish a parallel between their own culture and the target language culture.

(JORGE TEIXEIRA – PEARSON LONGMAN)In this ever-changing world, when we talk about new high tech tools, new trends in education, etc, a question remains unanswered: "How do I, as a teacher, fit into all this?" In this workshop, participants will be invited to share insights about professional development tools as well as practical ideas for successful classroom management, bearing in mind that the teacher is still the main gear in the teaching and learning environment.

NEUROSCIENTIFIC SHOWCASE: LANGUAGE LEARNING(DENISE DE FELICE – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)This presentation aims at showing credible neuroscientific research findings that can help teachers understand how the brain learns languages. Among the topics that will be addressed are the bilingual brain, attention, memory, L2/L1 neural mapping, child X adult learning, and practical implications for Foreign Language Teaching. Video segments will lead participants to experience some brain processes.

(RODRIGO SANTANA – CCBEU GOIÂNIA)Portuguese (L1) can be a nightmare for teachers who want to activate students´ cognition in English through communicative monolingual classes. In this session we will talk about successful ways to avoid L1 while optimizing the use of English in class.

(THELMA MARQUES – ALUMNI)The main aim of this workshop is to show the importance of correct pronunciation and stress patterns in words. By using simple drawings and games, students will be involved in fun activities that will help them learn the phonetic symbols and become more independent learners.

(LILIAN MARCHESONI AND DÉBORA CABRAL LIMA – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)Technology can be used in many ways to become part of the curriculum and meet the needs of diverse learners. PowerPoint can add a new dimension to learning, allowing teachers to explain abstract concepts, while accommodating all learning styles. The objective of this presentation is to provide teachers with ideas to practice the grammatical and lexical points of their lessons in more communicative ways and, at the same time, engage and have fun with their students using PowerPoint.

(SUMMER MARVIN – ENGLISH LANGUAGE FELLOW)The workshop provides opportunities for teaching professionals to exercise and practice their speaking “muscles”. In the session, the presenter will discuss the reasons teachers most often “lose” some of their own language skills over time and, therefore, require constant development opportunities. We will review the components involved in pronunciation and we will practice discrete sounds, rhythm, linking & blending and intonation. As a group, we will use contrastive analysis to tackle troublesome sounds and make language comparisons. The purpose of the pronunciation class is to allow teachers to practice, ask questions, and learn some useful techniques they will then pass on to their students.

(RONALDO MANGUEIRA LIMA JÚNIOR – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)This workshop initiates with a brief presentation of some data resulting from research conducted by the presenter which will pave the way for the following demonstration of pedagogical techniques and strategies concerning the teaching of pronunciation to Brazilian EFL learners. The activities demonstrated will focus on a direct applicability to the language classroom.

(MÁRCIA RIBEIRO – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)This workshop aims at showing the use of PROVERBS to promote cultural awareness and vocabulary acquisition through several classroom activities. During the session, participants will be provided with ideas on how to choose themes, language level and cultural aspects in relation to the group of students they have in mind. The presenter will also share some hands-on activities for teenage groups.

(SUMMER MARVIN – ENGLISH LANGUAGE FELLOW)It is instrumental in the education process, and it is essential that we as language instructors learn how to provide effective feedback using an approach that is conducive to a collaborative, student-centered classroom. This session will focus on ways to give useful and effective feedback so that language learners can reach their optimal learning potential.

READERS IN THE EFL CLASSROOOM – PRE-READING, WHILE-READING AND POST- READING ACTIVITIES

TEACHING AND LEARNING GRAMMAR CREATIVELY

TEACHING LEXICALLY

(VIRGINIA GALVÃO – MACMILLAN)As reading should be seen as a pleasurable part of the course and not something to be endured, this workshop is intended to bring out fun suggestions of pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading activities in order to promote successful extensive reading in the EFL classroom.

(RAFAEL REIS – CENGAGE)Welcome to the sights and sounds of the world with the Footprint Reading Library, a unique new series of graded readers for learners of English, developed by Heinle in partnership with National Geographic. This series offers fascinating stories from the four corners of our world, and develops the language and skills needed to understand non-fiction writing.

(RAFAEL REIS – CENGAGE)Heinle and National Geographic have developed an exclusive partnership to publish a new generation of ELT materials. Dynamic collections designed specifically for English Language Teaching motivate learners using the rich content of National Geographic-including stunning photos, authentic graphics, incredible maps, exciting video, and more!

(WILLY C CARDOSO - ENGLISH IN THE OFFICE)A closer look at the acquisition of any skill reveals the importance, if not the necessity, of self-assessment. In this session I will show some task types, resources and self-assessment models for teachers to develop a sense of responsibility in their learners so that they understand why and how they learn.

(JACK SCHOLES – SBS)This talk invites you to take a closer look at yourself as a teacher of adolescents and at the students as learners. Innovative ideas and creative techniques will be presented to help teachers experiment and try out new skills, effective beliefs and positive attitudes that enhance language learning and teaching.

(JACK SCHOLES – SBS)Grammar does not have to be dull. The teacher can provide learner-led awareness-raising activities and motivating opportunities for the students to express themselves creatively. Grammar can be fun with lessons and activities to stimulate the imagination, humor and creativity of your students and increase the effectiveness of grammar practice.

(JORGE TEIXEIRA – PEARSON LONGMAN)Teacher Development Interactive is a video-based, online teacher development program that gives new teachers and teachers looking for a refresher a really strong foundation in teaching methodology. If you are a new teacher, or a teacher looking for a refresher, Teacher Development Interactive is perfect for you.

(RAFAEL REIS – HEINLE, CENGAGE LEARNING)This practical workshop aims to change the way you think about language by introducing the lexical approach. Through the lexical approach, you will begin to look at the relationship between grammar and vocabulary in a new light. This workshop will suggest innovative ways to teach language and skills, to deal with speaking in class and to handle student correction. It will provide concrete examples of how to approach the language classroom in a lexical way and will leave you with practical ways to integrate this approach into your classroom.

THE DYNAMICS OF DISCIPLINE(KATY COX – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)Is discipline a question of imposition or disposition? The word “discipline” may seem embued with regimental rigidity, but the dimensions of this concept are in fact not confined to predictable parameters. The tactics and attitudes which contribute to a disciplined learning environment are as varied as the ages and levels any teacher might deal with during a given semester. This presentation will share at least some of the proven-by-practice insights and recommendations of your fellow language teaching professionals with regard to how to effectively include dimensions of discipline in your classroom management.

(RAFAEL REIS – HEINLE, CENGAGE LEARNING)This workshop will present the 'missing piece of the puzzle' for language teachers and students. It starts by surveying what we know about language learning and teaching and reviews the linguistic parameters under which this learning must take place. There will then be a review of the current state of EFL to show how we, as an industry, present language to students in a linear manner based on a 'teaching causes learning model' of language learning. Recent research into lexical analysis and vocabulary learning will highlight the relatively little recycling of vocabulary, the lack of attention to collocation, colligation and lexical phrases in general there is in typical EFL courses which vastly underestimate the amount of language students need to meet for acquisition to take place. It will also highlight the conditions under which vocabulary can be acquired. The final section will show how teachers, students and curriculum designers can provide the missing massive amounts of exposure students need to consolidate their language knowledge to enable long-term acquisition to take place.

(CARLA ARENA – THOMAS JEFFERSON)This presentation aims at showing educators the transformative potential of the digital world at the tip of their hands. Participants will see concrete examples of previous class projects and will learn more about this 10-week online course offered by Casa Thomas Jefferson.

(LUELI CERUTI – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)The TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) can help your institution assess the final product of your program and provide your students with one of the most trusted English-language assessment in the world. Using ITP for institutional placement, progress evaluation and exit testing allows you to add value to your product, as you can be associated to an institution which provides certification that is of the highest quality and as free of bias as possible. The TOEFL ITP is the leading on-site testing program in the world. It is convenient and affordable. More than 400,000 ITP tests are administered worldwide each year, and that number continues to grow.

(ELYSIO SOARES SANTOS JUNIOR – CASA THOMAS JEFFERSON)This workshop aims at helping participants use this online photo management and sharing application to enhance their EFL classes on their own. The participants will be given a demonstration and will be guided to create their own Flickr accounts as well as try out some of its features.

(ANA MARIA MENEZES – CULTURA INGLESA - UBERLÂNDIA)The web offers several tools which can be used in order to develop projects in language classes. During this talk, I intend to present some web tools and share online projects developed with EFL students.

(WILLY C CARDOSO - ENGLISH IN THE OFFICE)What should grades reflect? How should components of a course figure into grades? Are teachers able to capture the totality of students' competence through formal tests? From this discussion, we will be able to derive some generalizations about the nature of grading, some principles of grading, and some guidelines for grading.
