7th EDITION OF THE “JUSTINIANO CASAS” PRIZE FOR RESEARCH ON OPTICAL IMAGING

TheSpanishOpticalSocietyCommitteeforImageTechniques,underthesponsorshipof LASINGS.A.,herebypublishes thecall forapplications for the7theditionof theJustiniano Casas Prize for Research on Optical Imaging, in accordance with thefollowing TERMS AND CONDITIONS 1.-Objective.Theobjectiveoftheprizeistopromoteandincentivizescientificresearchinallareasrelatedtoopticalimaging,fromprogressinbasicknowledgetothedevelopmentofapplications in the field. In particular, the prize tries to stimulate research activityfrom its origins, in the framework of doctorate studies, and to foster theincorporationofnewresearchersinthisfield.2.-Periodicity.Thisprizeisawardedeverytwoyears.

3.-Requirements.ThosepersonswithadoctoratedegreewhosePhD.ThesisisrelatedtoresearchonOptical Imaging (see the list of topics in Annex I) and who fulfil the followingrequisitesmayapplyforthisyear’sprize:

¤ PhDVivabetween January1st, 2017andDecember31st, 2018, andhaveachievedtopqualificationinthedefenceoftheirPhD.thesis.¤ PhD Viva in English, Portuguese, Spanish or any of the Spanish officiallanguages.¤Tobeamember(candidateandsupervisor)oftheSpanishOpticsSociety(SEDOPTICA)ortohaveappliedformembershipbeforethedeadlinefortheapplicationsubmission.Thisconditionwillalsobeconsideredfulfilled inthecase of PhD candidate and supervisor/s have a membership application insome of the societies or networks in optics integrated within the RedIberoamericanadeÓptica(RIAO).IncaseofmorethanonePhDsupervisors,itwillbeenoughthatoneofthemtofulfillthestatusofmembership.¤ To accept to participate, as well as their supervisor/s, in the awardsceremonyortosendarepresentativeincaseofbeingselected.Moreover,incaseofbeingawarded,thescientificcontentofthethesiswillbedescribedinthe form of an article in the publicationmodality of “PhD revision” of thejournal“ÓpticaPurayAplicada”(http://www.sedoptica.es/Menu_Volumenes/autores.php), presenting theoriginalproposals,themainachievementsandresults.Equationsandfigurescan be included. Maximum extension: 10 pages. This summary will bepresentedinSpanishorinEnglish.

4.-Place,procedureanddeadlinefortheapplicationsubmissions.Application formsmust be sent to the address indicated in Annex II, in the formspecifiedtherein,togetherwiththerequireddocumentation.Theapplicationperiodwillbeopenfrom00h(UTC)onDecember20th,2019until24h(UTC)onApril20th,2020. The submission of the application implies the acceptance of the terms andconditionsoftheprize.Afterreceivingallthedocumentationcorrectly,theSecretaryoftheCommitteewillinformthecandidateviaemailtotheemailaddressprovidedintheapplicationform.5.-Prizes.Twoprizesareestablishedfortheauthorsofthetheses,afirstprizeof1000€andasecond prize of 500€. Winners will receive a diploma and a bank check for thecorrespondingamount.Respectivesupervisorswillreceiveacommemorativeplaquewith the indicationof theprize.Theawardsceremonywillbeduring5theditionoftheInternationalSchoolofLightSciencesandTechnologies,June22ndto26th,2020in theMagdalenaPalaceofSantander (Spain).Accordingto jurycriteria, theprizesmaynotbeawardedtoanycandidate.

6.-Jury.The jurywill be composed of fivemembers, four of thembelonging to the ImageTechniquesCommittee, designatedby its President after consulting theopinionofthemembersoftheBoardofDirectorsoftheCommittee,andonewillbenominatedby the sponsor (LASING S.A.). The jury may collect the external reports it deemsappropriate for a better evaluation of the work presented. None of the jurymembers will have participated as co-author of any article published by anycandidatefortheprize,atleastduringtheirpredoctoralperiod.7.-EvaluationCriteria.Thejurywillconsiderthefollowingcriteria:

a)Thequalityofthethesisanditsresultingpublications(55points).b) The adequacy of the work to the scope of Optical Imaging in any of itsmultiplevariantsoutlinedinAnnexI(15points).c) The practical interest of the achieved results especially valued by theexistenceofpatentsderivedfromthesiswork(15points).d) The formal framework through which the doctoral thesis was developed(competitivefundingsupport,researchstays,etc.)(15points).

8.-Decisionperiodandnotification.Thejurymustreachadecisionwithinsixmonthsofthedeadlineofthesubmissionperiod, considering the date of the awards ceremony. The jury's decisions areunappealable. Prize winners will be notified, and it will be also published on thewebsiteoftheSpanishSocietyofOpticsandinthe“ÓpticaPurayAplicada”Journal(in the "Los comités informan" section). The sponsor company, LASING S.A. maydisseminate for advertising purposes, the results of the awarded works, alwaysindicatingtheauthorsandtheiraffiliation.9.-PublicationinthePureandAppliedOpticsJournal.A summary of the winners’ work will be published in the journal “Óptica Pura yAplicada”(indexedSJR,IET,DOAJ,ICYT,e-journals,latindex,http://www.sedoptica.es/Menu_Volumenes/index.php) in the publicationmodalityof“PhD.Revisions”.Thejurymayalsorecommendthepublicationofsummariesofotherapplicants,eventhoughtheyhavenotwontheprize.
