700 B.C. the move for conquering started
721 B.C. Assyrians conquer Israel and Samaria falls
God used Assyrians to punish Israel for their disobedience.
Key Rulers Tiglath-pilser III ruled from 745-
727 B.C. Shalmaneser V in 722 B.C.
Deported the 10 tribes of the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
Ashurbanipul who ruled from 669-626 B.C. collected a library of over 100,000 stone tablets
Less than 100 years of power, in 612 B.C. Assyria was defeated in Nineveh to the Chaldeans, Medes and Scythians
The LORD has given a command concerning you, Nineveh : "You will have no descendants to bear your

Chaldean Empire Chaldeans came from southern end of
Mesopotamia to establish kingdom in Babylon.
King Nabopolassar (625-605 B.C.) made alliances with Medes and Scythians to overthrow Assyria.
Conquered ALL of Mesopotamia and created Chaldean or New Babylonian Empire.
Son, King Nebuchadnezzar (605-562 B.C.), conquered western part including Southern Kingdom of Judah.
Destroyed Jerusalem and took people to Babylon BUT unlike the Assyrians, they treated their captives much better.
Book of Daniel Last King, Nabonidus, son of
Nebuchadnezzar NOT a follower of God. Babylon fell 539 B.C.
Medes and Persians invaded and took over less than 100 years after Chaldean Empire started

Persians to defeat Medes Isaiah, hundreds of years
before, prophesized this!!
Strategies: Fight in bad conditions Did not make conquered
people give up their local loyalties to their city, god, king, culture, etc.
Did not instill fear like Chaldeans and Assyrians.
536 B.C. 42,360 Jews returned to Judah

Darius
Cyrus died in 529 B.C. and caused a bit of questioning to what should happen to the Jews Darius (522-486 B.C.) was reminded that
Cyrus commanded for the rebuilding of the Temple and used tax money for it. Persia prospered under his leadership. Had a
system for taxing which gave people time to plan to pay.
Standardized money, weights, buying, selling, lending.
New roads – “Royal Road” 1,600 miles long from Susa to Sardis

Persian royalty fighting after the death of Darius I
Xerxes (486-464 B.C.) murdered in bed Artaxerxes (464-424 B.C.) killed older brother to
get power Darius II (423-404 B.C.) killed several brothers Artaxerxes II (404-358) all provinces came
together to overthrow Artaxerxes III (359-338) B.C. poisoned by palace
assistant Arses (338-336 B.C.) murdered with whole family Darius III (336-330 B.C.) killed by own men during
escape from Alexander the Great.
