It has been a rough week in the USA. It is hard to believe that things have got so bad. It is really hard to even know where to begin to ask how it got to this. It is good to be together in faith if not in a church building – still one, still free and still a part of the Holy Trinity! God bless your worship this weekend whether alone or in a group. It has been a rough week in the USA. It is hard to believe that things have got so bad. It is really hard to even know where to begin to ask how it got to this. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of George Floyd and the tens of thousands of everyday people who have just wanted to say something against such injustice but have been overtaken by others bent on destruction.

The words I remember from the week are from George Floyd’s brother, Terrence. “What you doin’?” he asked of those looting and destroying in an attempt to call that behaviour out and try to get them to stop. I hear that question not for only far off America but home in our country as we too have a long story of injustice to indigenous and other people: “What you doin’?” citizens of Australia? and for us, “What you doin’?” citizens of the new community – the Holy Trinity Community, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

I find great instruction and encouragement in Paul’s words in 2 Corinthians today. Paul knows the pressure and the suffering and injustice of living this life and yet he can speak of something new, some new community from something new that God has done and still does. May the grace, blessing and fellowship of our “One yet Three” God, be with you today as we live in tough times. Pastor Adrian

Let’s Re-Connect! It is now OK to gather with others at home. Let’s reconnect! Maybe the Lord is calling you to make a group at your place, or seek to be part of another group. We can help with that by ‘matching you up’ with people and groups.

Holy Communion One of our Pastors would be privileged to visit your small group to share Holy Communion. Please advise the office when and where your group meets and we can arrange for this to happen. Phone 8562 1011 or email [email protected] YOU COULD DO THIS EVEN AS A ONE-OFF IF YOU AREN’T SURE ABOUT A LONGER TERM COMMITMENT — for the purpose of gathering for Holy Communion in a way that values our pastors’ time and creates opportunity for more people to receive the Holy meal.

Details on gathering

• It would be wise to keep your groups to around 10 or less—but the regulations do allow up to 20 but being able to keep 1.5m distance between people (This is one person per 4 square metres in a room).

In an average lounge room, this could be maybe 3-4 people. In a large living area or semi outdoor areas (like a patio), this could be maybe 5-8 people. It would not be wise to meet outdoors (larger area for more people) because flu season is coming, and we want to minimise the chances of catching colds and etc!

• We need to wash hands and wipe down surfaces before and after the group.

• We need to keep a record of who is attending our group each week along with a contact number.

We suggest a simple format: • Check in with each other (Highs and Lows for the week etc…)

• Light a candle and Pause before worship. • View the Worship Service (online or DVD) • Use words provided in bulletin • Debrief on the Worship Service • Share a time of fellowship.

Our Worship Service is ready to be viewed by Friday evening. You can gather anytime of your choosing. If you have a Bible Study group and would like a Pastor to attend and give Holy Communion—just ask.

Let’s rebuild a network of house groups worshipping

the Lord together at this time!

WE PRAY OUR SHARED FAITH - NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead; and His Kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. we acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

WE SING Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name In the land that is plentiful Where Your streams of abundance flow Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name When I'm found in the desert place Though I walk through the wilderness Blessed be Your name

GOD BLESSES US: WE GO WITH GOD

Our Pastors - Pastor Adrian, Pastor Robert Voigt, Pastor Paul Lohe and Pastor Ken Pfitzner are ready and waiting to attend your small worship group and offer Holy Communion. Kay has put together some neat little packs for safe delivery of Holy Communion elements to your house. Just phone the office to book your group in. It might even be a group that you get together just for this purpose as a one-off. Whatever works for you!

Page 7: 7th June 2020 · WE SING All Creatures of our God and King LH 429 1. All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia, alleluia! O burning sun with

St Petri Life on campus Some of our small groups are coming back and the place is starting to feel a little more like the community that we are used to around here.

If you would like to run a small home church group or Bible study and you don’t have the space at home, you could ring the office o check if the hall or meeting room are available.

There are some regulations which we need to adhere to. The room needs to be large enough to hold your group keeping in mind not to exceed 1 person per 4 square metres of usable space. So the hall can hold 20 at the moment + Pastor or staff. but when restrictions lift further there could be up to 43 in there. The Meeting Room can hold 14 people maximum (no extra staff). Need to maintain 1.5 m social distancing.

If you are able to do without a cuppa, that is ideal for the moment but if you need to you can bring in your own keep cup and take that cup home with you (no one else touches it). Or disposable cups could be used with one person serving (with sanitized hands), they put in the coffee, sugar, water, Milk. No shared utensils are allowed and shared food plates are discouraged.

The people at the meeting need to be seated and chairs placed at 1.5 m spacings.

Surfaces need to be wiped down after use.

Some of our community are gathering this week or have gathered last week.

Coffee & Friendship Group (Jenny Wood’s Group)

Tuesday 9th June at 9.30 am Meeting Room (Maximum 14 in the room) so ring Jenny beforehand if you don’t usually go to this group and plan on “popping in”

Mid week Holy Communion A beautiful little gathering of our people received Holy Communion on Wednesday at the Mid-week Holy Communion (which is held once per month on the first Wednesday). Pastor Paul Lohe gave a message to inspire and offered Holy Communion. Aileen played the clavinova for a some fervent hymn singing and Brian Kalleske, along with Robert Hoerisch organized set-up very efficiently adhering to guidelines of social distancing and not sharing utensils. There was much joy in being back together with part of the family.

Hand in Hand Playgroup Rannane will be running this on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the hall

Staff Prayer time is back and happening again.

The Means of Grace — Word of God by Noel Due ‘The word of God’ and ‘the means of grace’ – both familiar statements, both deeply embedded in our heritage. And therein lies the danger. We can become so accustomed to the means – baptism, holy communion and the preaching of the word – that we overlook their presence and power. Or better said, God’s presence and power. Because in them God gives himself to us. He meets us with outstretched hands, to forgive and to bless, to bestow life and salvation, to seal his eternal promises to us. They are personal actions, in which God performs what he promises. That’s why the phrase is ‘the word of God’, not ‘the word about God’. The God who loves us speaks. And he doesn’t utter opinions into empty space; the Word has a face and name. The writer to the Hebrews put it like this: ‘in these last days, God has spoken in his Son’ (Hebrews 1:2). Jesus is the Word. So, it is no surprise to hear him say: ‘My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me’ (John 10:27 ESV). What makes a pastor’s heart sing? It’s hearing his people (even one of them!) say: ‘God spoke to me this morning’. That’s worth a thousand ‘Nice sermon, pastor’ comments; or: ‘I hope the Crows win!’; ‘The children were noisy today. Again’; or even (a very rare) ‘You’re looking well!’. But when God speaks, the world changes. That’s what powered the Reformation. It wasn’t just the reading, but the preaching of God’s word which turned the world upside down.

Page 9: 7th June 2020 · WE SING All Creatures of our God and King LH 429 1. All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia, alleluia! O burning sun with

Why? A great theologian once said that no-one hears the gospel from the lips of the preacher, only from the lips of Christ. Only Christ can preach himself. And he does, every day. He preaches in thousands of languages, uses vastly different personalities, and spans time and space through his servants. But when Christ preaches his gospel, his sheep know it. No matter which accent they hear, the sheep come to him, not to his servant. In their distress, they cry to him; in their joy, they praise him. Their faith rests on Christ, because they have heard his voice in the preaching. Where we see this, we see a miracle. Rev Dr Noel Due From “The Lutheran” October 2017 This was written prior to COVID 19 times but a message well worth reading again. We don’t get to shake Pastor’s hand on Sunday morning at the moment but we are blessed to hear God’s word preached in a different way. We are missing Holy Communion at the moment and hopefully are thinking about who we can invite around to our place (or Church Meeting Room) to get together with a small group of people to receive the Holy meal.

Zoom Chat Group 7.30pm Thursday Nights

Messy Church At Home - craft It was exciting to create our first on-line ‘Messy Church at Home’, with the theme ‘Good

News Everyday’ going out far and wide into the Barossa community. You may wonder how

we sent the message out? Firstly, we have a Messy Church email database of over 70

families, so we emailed our families

‘Messy Church at Home’ via a YouTube

link. Secondly, we have recently created a

‘St Petri-Messy Church’ Facebook page,

where the number of subscribers is

growing daily. We put our updates on this

page, including ‘Messy Church at Home’

and our Sunday children’s messages.

Lastly, we have our ‘Messy Church at

Home’ available to watch on our St Petri

Website – go to the ‘Ministries’ tab, and

then click on the ‘Youth & Family’ tab. We’ve also encouraged our Messy Church supporters

to share Messy Church with their family and friends. Next week, I look forward to sharing

more of this journey with you. See below a picture of a paper plate ‘Good News

Frisbee’ (front and back view), made by one of our Messy Church children after watching

‘Messy Church at Home.’ (frisbee includes, ‘God loves everyone’, Jesus crosses, love hearts

and a butterfly) Thank you Rachael!

Our people, stories & fai th Thoughts taken from Every Day With Jesus May/June 2020. Theme of this edition is Imagery of the Spirit. “Every one of us needs to take in deep breaths of the Spirit if we are to function in the way God designed us. .... whatever our need— to be dynamic representatives of God’s grace, to speak his Word with conviction and authority, to be free of spiritual ill- health— we must take deep, regular breaths of the Spirit … The hymnist Edward Hatch captures this thought in his well known hymn :(129 LH)

Breath on me breath of God, Fill me with life anew, That I may love what thou dost love, And do what thou wouldst do.

Prayer: Spirit of the living God, impart your pure breath into every part of my being. May I not fail to receive what you are so ready to supply. In Jesus’ name. Amen Ruth Rathjen

De-Cluttering With Greg working from home over these last couple of months, we have taken to the task of a little decluttering. Not anywhere near as much as would be needed to bring any truly freeing results, I must admit.

I have always found decluttering a challenge and a while ago went to a class on decluttering to try and help with this surprisingly difficult task. I learnt a few great tips – my favourite being the idea that if you purchase something that is not suited to your needs, it was a mistake when you purchased it. It has no place in your house no matter how much you paid for it. You either take it back – or if that is not possible give it away – or even throw it away if it is of no use to anyone else. While it is in your house it is a reminder to you that you made a mistake and keeping the item doesn’t make it valuable. And you learn to be more careful next time.

Sometimes I will pick up an item that should go out and reminisce about where it came from and the story behind it and pop it back on the shelf in a different spot. But, re-arranging is not decluttering! Or, I decide to throw it out – put it outside even and the next day have second thoughts and bring it back.

Page 13: 7th June 2020 · WE SING All Creatures of our God and King LH 429 1. All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia, alleluia! O burning sun with

It can be like that with my spiritual life too, a pet little habit that I know doesn’t fit with who God wants me to be. An unhelpful attitude, a way of relating that does not bring God glory and negative thoughts. These can all be evaluated and brought before God and even repented of and then just put back on the shelf in a different place maybe to be dealt with another day? Or just that I might not really want to give it up yet? All decluttering involves a leaving behind.

Jesus didn’t go through death and the grave to save my sin ridden old self. He has better plans. He died for the new me, to set me free of that clutter and to live the new life. I just have to chuck the clutter out and no fishing it out of the trash pile again.

There is much joy in living in the new life of the Spirit. Love, joy, patience - the new life

which is the new “me” that I will be in heaven and are already becoming when I can have

the strength to leave the old behind. And that only happens with the Holy Spirit beside me

and we do it together. Again, and again. - Rosie

A couple of these thoughts were triggered from a book I am reading written by Peter

Steicke called “Spirited”. He also has a website called “Incredibly loved”

In Touch When the world starts talking about World Wars, The Depression, previous pandemics and now the ongoing injustice of past eras, you know the times are changing and the times are very significant for now and the future. In what ways, who knows?

Regardless of whatever these times produce, our God, Father, Son and Spirit has seen it all, knows it all and has done enough for us all in the resurrection of Jesus for the life of the world. We trust that and continue on relying on his presence and promises as a local church.

This is what are doing – continuing on. We seemed to have adapted very well to the restrictions under COVID 19. There has been faith, love and general care for each other evident everywhere. Thank you everyone!! We will continue to do so as they ease.

We are not sure when it will be best to try and return to larger public worship in our church building. We are keen to assist people in continuing to stay connected in their homes via digital means and now by making the effort to help each other gather in smaller ‘little church’ gatherings at home. Some are doing this and it is a delight to share Holy Communion in this way.

I wonder whether the Holy Spirit is calling us not to simply ‘return to normal’ when restrictions lift, but rather ‘see what is next’ for us as a church in mission here.

What’s next will have to include the ongoing engagement in the digital way of being connected. We have hundreds of people listening to our worship services and other messages now.

The challenge is to learn together how to turn some of these local connections into real relationships and nurture in the gospel. God has given us an opportunity to proclaim his good news in new ways for this time. I think each of us simply living life and sharing Jesus’ in our relationships is always how the gospel is spread and lives changed. I wonder if gathering small in homes and other places will have a lot to do with meeting that challenge. We will need to talk about that and try some things.

For now, GC and staff will ponder and pray until we have some things to say about where we sense the Spirit leading us and what that might mean in terms of changing how we gather and reach out.

We remain a sent people under Jesus, the Head of the church. We have a future in him. We have a listening community. We have words to share. The Holy Spirit does the calling and gathering and enlightening through us. That is always who we are and what we do however we gather and stay connected.

The peace of Christ rule in your heart and give you patient endurance and joy. Pastor Adrian
