Homecoming

You already know that September 13-14 will be our 100 Year Homecoming

Weekend. But don’t take for granted that everybody knows about it. Don’t hesitate to

call a former member and encourage them to come. They might have forgotten and

some may have not even been contacted. We are going to have a great Homecoming

as we celebrate:

“"A century of service and a charge to keep, to Christ, the Church, and the World."

Sunday Night Series on Acts

Tonight I’m planning on wrapping up our series on the book of Acts. We’ve spent

several months, even back into last fall, on this study but tonight we’ll close it out. I

hope you’ll be present for our study and worship at 5:00.

Finishing Up our Acts to Alabama Summer Series

Wednesday night David Courington will lead us in our final lesson in this series

as we discuss “The Church in the State of Alabama.” It’ll be a great lesson because

David has been doing a lot of research about our local and state church history!

The Need to Evangelize The word evangelize is from the Greek word euanggelizo which means “to bring or announce glad tidings.” It was used of bringing good tidings of any kind. In Luke 2:10 the angels announced to the shepherds, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.” Paul uses this word in quoting from Isaiah 52:7 in Rom. 10:15. “And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is writ-ten: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tid-ings of good things!” As a noun the word was used of the good tidings or gospel. In giving the great commission, Jesus told His disciples, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mk. 16:15). Earlier in Mark’s gospel we have Jesus using this word in speaking of the coming destruction of Jerusalem, explaining that certain things must happen prior to that de-struction. Jesus told them that among other things, “the gospel must first be preached to all the nations” (Mk. 13:10). The word is used as an ad-jective to describe the one who brings the good tidings. Luke uses the word of Philip in Acts 21:8. “On the next day we who were Paul's compan-ions departed and came to Caesarea, and en-tered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.” And Paul commanded Timothy to “be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry” (2 Tim. 4:5). Evangelism is not limited to proclaiming the gospel from the pulpit to a large audience. It was often used of the telling of the good news by one individual to another individual. For example we see this being done by Andrew in John 1:40, 41 – “One of the two who heard John speak, and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. “He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, ‘We have found the Mes-siah’ (which is translated, the Christ’)”. The greatest need, the greatest work is to evangelize the whole world. But why? Why should we be con-cerned with evangelizing the world? First of all we need to remember that life is short. Our time to do the evangelizing and the time for the lost to hear and respond is limited. This fact is emphasized throughout the Bible. Long ago the psalmist said, “the days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psa. 90:10). One may live to be eighty or even longer. However, there is no guarantee of that and the truth is that it might be limited to the age to which we have attained. -to be continued

“Thanks to all who worked and participated in the focus programs we had on our three locations over the last 100 years. Also, there will

not be a charge for our picnic on September 13th. Our elders

are paying for the food and activities out of their own pocket. This is very generous and let’s

be sure to thank them.”
