Pro’S CORNERAlan Ehnes, Director of Golf

Congratulations to Jeff Jackson and playing partner Brett Caeton they shot 64 best ball and won top spot in the NCGA Fourball qualifying. Other teams that qualifying were Larry Wapner & Ed Hashim and Dan Hedden and his playing partner Todd Montague both teams shooting 66. All teams will advance to the next regional site, not yet determined. Good luck !!

PRO TIP: The Buried Lie!! When you face a buried lie in a greenside bunker, you really have to temper your expectations on how close to the hole you can land the ball. From a perfect lie the sand, you could simply set the face of your sand wedge open, play the ball off your left heel, align a little left of the target and your normal blast swing lofts the ball out of the sand, right???

From a buried lie, however, you’re looking at a situation where it’s easy to hit a low, ugly screamer over the green. If you get it out of the sand at all. A buried lie is a hideous sight; the ball plugged almost entirely below the surface. Since it is impossible to create a lot of backspin, most golfers think they can’t get it close from a buried lie. But, you can try this technique, play the ball off your back back foot and close the club face at address, so the full face of the club will enter and dig into the sand first.

Cock your wrist fully as you make a short backswing. Pop down onto the ball, and don’t follow through. The resistance of the sand will square the clubface as it flips the ball on to the green. Expect a lower trajectory than you would see from a normal blast.

TOURNAMENTS: Senior club championship is just around the corner. The date is May 7th for qualifying for the championship flight. Our current Senior Club Champion is Greg Loosigian and is looking forward to some tough competition this year. You can find all the details and the sign up inside the pro shop.

GREEN TALK: By the time you read this article most of the declining redwood trees will have been removed.

This declining condition was due to the four year drought that all of California experience. Replanting trees has started in these areas and will take some time to complete. Positioning trees is very complicated and there is a lot of communication going into replanting. When these trees develop into big trees they will be a challenge to the golfer, and also make the golf course look beautiful for many years to come. Once these new trees get planted on the course and your golf ball is either next to one or your swing might be impeded, please refer to the local rules to see what your option might be to help protect the tree during its’ developing years, or just maybe you might even get a better lie from that local rule.

Flight is not the only recipient of our Senior contributions - the Len Ross Organization, promoting youth golf, is and has always been supported by our Seniors.

We are following up the Invitational with a great bus trip to the beautiful Seven Oaks CC in western Bakersfield. This is a great facility with a membership of inviting tough Seniors - we will return the favor with a tournament here. If you have not signed up for this one - you need to do quickly - this is an outstanding trip which includes the bus and dining.

Extended by demand - the Senior Shirt sign up has been extended to a second order - the first order was for 45 shirts - but the demand continues- guess there are a lot of Latin speakers and students of the dead language within our ranks.

Fort Washington’s annual nominat-ing committee is inviting

Senior’s just puttin’-’roundMike DurkinThe Fort Washington Seniors are noted through out the

valley for its great organization, first class golf course, and spirit. April 13 and April 15 may be an all time test for our seniors athletic and endurance abilities, let alone fortitude, as we open the Senior Eleven series with a match at Copper River CC on the 13th followed by a match at Merced CC on the 15th. Please check the sign up sheet in the Pro Shop, not to just sign up, but to view the names of the super heroes making both matches. Put your name on the list and you may qualify as a manly man type golfer.

As you know, the Senior Invitational is April 21st and 22nd and again this year, we will be benefiting the Honor Flight Program- flying World War II and Korean veterans to Washington to view their memorials. The Spring flight this year will include a golfing notable, Bob Fries - but the rest of the story: Bob, a Marine veteran, is not going there alone - he is bringing his 4 brothers, all of whom are veterans. Thanks to the Fries Five. The Honor
