Blue Funk Concert B b
This piece is inspired by three great trumpet players: Blue Mitchell, Tom Harrell and Miles Davis. Mitchell was one of the best trumpeters to play with strict blues musicians (e.g. John Mayall), while both Harrell and Davis use inven-tive angular and chromatic lines over funk. This particular funk groove is typical of James Brown, as well as the 1970’s Oakland, CA sound (e.g. Tower of Power).
At first glance, 16th notes might look intimidating, but at quarter = 93, they are not very fast. In fact, all of the melodies/lines could be played as 8th notes on a tune of virtually any tempo or groove (e. g. a medium swing B b blues)! They are very flexible and stand on their own in other contexts.
Mitchell often subtly shifts between a blues sound with the flat 5 (ms 19, 31, 31–32, 38, 56) a minor pentatonic sound (ms 28, 33, 39, 46–48, 51, 54, 62, 64) and minor 6 sound (ms 18, 22, 32, 45, 61).
Other melodies over concert B b7 use a Miles-type idea, playing both the flat 3rd and natural 3rd, flat 7 and natural 7 (ms 35, 41–42, 49–50, 63) and a Harrell-type hemiola (ms 51–52). The one exception of a melody outside of con-cert B b7 is ms 43, beat 2 and 3, based on concert F7 altered, leading back to concert B b7.
Bebop-type lines rule on the concert F V7 (ms 25, 37, 61). A concept typically used by Mitchell, these lines bring a bright color and excitement to the last 4 measures of the form.
Rhythm Section: Joe plays a 16th note groove on the hi-hat, with snare usually accenting beat 2, the fourth 16th of 2, and 4. Mike plays variations on a very funky, syncopated bass line. It’s an exceptional groove.
Blue Funk klingend B b
Tower of Power) sehr typisch.
