SO@E ACTORS IN )!ENCING ENGINEERING DESIGN AND PROD!CT APP)ICATION O IRETRACE !NITS

The following are some of the factors that influence engineering design and application of Firetrace units. In man% cases, these factors aredifficult to accuratel% estimate, and it is for these reasons that Firetrace ma4esno warranties other than those specificall% stated in this)&6&+e a%%a$+,.

. The Firetrace unit has $een designed to pro1ide protection against fire, $oth e!isting and imminent, for a limited duration of time when' the unit is full% operationalJ used in its normal, e!pected en1ironmentJ the unit and its component parts are properl% installedmaintained, and operated incomplete accordance with written instructions supplied with the unit.

    2. The duration of the protection against fires dependent upon a sufficient concentration of agent $eing maintained in the protectedha5ard area for a pre-determined period of time. This duration will $e shortened $% conditions or circumstances which ma% 1entilatcause the agent concentration dilution within the protected ha5ard area there$% causing an insufficient concentration of agent as isneeded to e!tinguish or pre1ent the e!istence or re-ignition of com$ustion or fire. All ha5ard areas ha1e different rate of 1entilation,lea4age, or agent dilution that, in man% cases, ma% $e impossi$le to predict or determine. Air 1ents, air conditioning units, gaps an

crac4s in the enclosure, windows, ca$le and pipe penetrations, etc., all ma% effect the agent concentration and the duration of theprotection against fire. Also, unforeseen changes in the configuration of a ha5ard area such as remo1al of a wall, an e!plosion or firee!ternal to the protected space, changes in the enclosures configuration, etc. can influence the duration of the fire protection. It is$ecause of these man%, and 1aried, circumstances and conditions that Firetrace ma4esno warrant% as to the duration of theprotection against fire.

. The effecti1eness of an agent, such as HFC-227ea and(or C;2, as a fire e!tinguishant is directl% related to the concentration of theagent re&uired to e!tinguish 1arious su$stances. )ot all su$stances re&uire the same agent concentration to $e e!tinguished. Therefore, Firetrace can onl% assume that the customer has properl% defined the ha5ard area s $eing protected.

    9. The effecti1eness of the Firetrace unit is dependent upon the timel% discharge of the agent fire e!tinguishant in to the protected area.If unforeseen circumstances such as an e!plosion, failure of the detection s%stem to acti1ate the Firetrace unit, failure to 0anuall%acti1ate the unit, etc. occur, the% can pre1ent the unit discharge from $eing accomplished in a timel% manner, and the fire ma%

$ecome deep seated or out of control and completel% destro% the ha5ard area. #ince Firetrace has no control o1er thesecircumstances, there are no warranties as to the effecti1eness of e!tinguishment of the fire other than those specificall% stated in this)&6&+e a%%a$+,.

=. 1en if the Firetrace unit is completel% effecti1e in suppressing a fire, failure to remo1e the ignition source of the fire could result inre-ignition of the fire. If possi$le, the source of the fire should immediatel% $e eliminated to pre1ent re-ignition. Protection against rignition onl% e!ists when a sufficient concentration of agent remains in the ha5ard area, as stated a$o1e.

#ince the effecti1eness of the Firetrace unit depends on when, under what circumstances, it is used, the 3udgment of operating personnelas to when to acti1ate a Firetrace unit, in an emergenc%, affects the protection pro1ided $% the unit. ecause of the widel% carr%iconditions and circumstances under which the Firetrace unit can $e used, some conditions can cause its effecti1eness to $e unpredicta$le.Therefore, e1acuation of personnel from the protected areasmust $e accomplished without dela%.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------# Potential Health Effects

Based on animal data, exposure to HFC-227ea by inhalation may cause suffocation, if air is displaced by vapors, and irregular heart beat with a strange sensation in the chest,"heart thumping," apprehension, lightheadedness, feeling offainting, dizziness, weakness, sometimes progressing to lossof consciousness and death.

HFC-227ea may cause frostbite if liquid or escaping vaporcontacts the skin.

HFC-227ea may cause "frostbite-like" effects if the liquid or escaping vapors contact the eyes.

In one study, human volunteers were selected to inhaleHFC-227ea at a concentration of 6000 ppm but the study wasterminated due to a rise in pulse rate that was believed to

be unrelated to the chemical. In a subsequent study withhuman volunteers inhaling concentrations up to 8000 ppm noclinically significant effects were observed for any of the

    measured laboratory parameters.

Individuals with preexisting diseases of the cardiovascularsystem or nervous system may have increased susceptibilityfrom excessive exposures.

    Carcinogenicity Information

None of the components present in this material at concentrationsequal to or greater than 0.1% are listed by IARC, NTP, OSHA or ACGIHas a carcinogen.

    # Animal Data

    HFC-227ea

    Inhalation 4 hour LC50: > 788,698 ppm in rats

Repeated exposure of rats by inhalation for 4 weeks atconcentrations up to 50,000 ppm revealed no toxicologicallysignificants effects. The NOEL for this study was 50,000

ppm. A 90-day inhalation study in rats did not find anyexposure related effects at 105,000 ppm. The NOEL for thisstudy was 105,000 ppm.

Cardiac sensitization, a potentially fatal disturbance ofheart rhythm associated with a heightened sensitivity to theaction of epinephrine, occurred in dogs at 105,000 ppm. The

NOAEL for cardiac sensitization was 90,000 ppm. In adifferent study to evaluate cardiac sensitization in dogs, concentrations of 90,000, 105,000, and 140,000 ppm caused adose-related increase in incidence and severity; at 90,000

ppm efffects were minimal or mild in nature.

Inhalation studies of HFC-227ea in rabbits and rats do notsuggest developmental toxicity at concentrations up to
