WelcomeThink of Bolsover District and think of the iconic attractions of Hardwick Hall, Creswell Crags and Bolsover Castle; the rugged landscape and close proximity to the Peak District National Park; home to one of the worlds largest Brass Band Festivals and now the Bolsover Brass Summer School. From young to old we want to welcome you to our creative Brass Summer School. A Summer School with a fun twist and innovative workshops, smaller numbers than some of the more established schools and one to one tuition with some of the finest tutors in

the world today. We aim to give you a fresh triumphant experience.

Bolsover District is located in the county of Derbyshire, and is nestled between the Peak District National Park and Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. With a fantastic mix of tutorials, recitals, indoor and outdoor public performances and planned leisure activities we feel that we have the perfect balance to make your stay with us one to remember. We also cater for non-participating guests and non-residential participants.

The new school opened in 2011 and comprises of 6 separate buildings, each with their own identity and purpose. The Social Hub and Performance Hub will be used for the summer school. Leisure ActivitiesThroughout the duration of the summer school, residents will have access to leisure facilities at Shirebrook Leisure Centre, Park Road, Shirebrook NG20 8JQ.

Leisure visits and performances are also proposed at the area’s key visitor attractions. Trips out and evening entertainment options will also be available. Rehearsals are of importance but we want you to feel like you have experienced what the local area has to offer and feel as if you have had a balance between performing, rehearsal and leisure time.

Introducing the TutorsBrett Baker Course Director/Trombone Tutor

Clinician for Michael Rath Brass Instruments, Principal trombone of Black Dyke Band, previously President of the British Trombone Society, Chairman of the Awards Committee for the International Trombone Association, Programme leader for BA Music (Musical Arts) at the University of Salford and Editor of

Glissando Magazine. Brett Baker is viewed internationally as a leading brass performer and educator; he is passionate about encouraging composers to write pioneering new repertoire for trombone having commissioned 100 compositions for the instrument.He has performed with celebrated singers such as Alison Goldfrapp and Hayley Westenra and other world class trombone soloists such as Ian Bousfield, Wycliffe Gordon, Christian Lindberg and Joseph Alessi. He is currently the most recorded trombone soloist in his genre, and as well as numerous radio broadcasts and TV appearances, by the age of 24 he had won every major brass band competition in the UK. Brett’s area of research includes trombone solo repertoire as well as modular instrument design. Brett has produced 25 solo CDs, 6 under his own label of White River Evocations, two sheet music solo albums and many arrangements for trombone.Originally from the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, Brett was introduced to the trombone by his father. In 1992 Brett moved north to study Business Economics at Salford University, simultaneously joining the Fairey Band. At Fairey’s Brett’s reputation as one of the finest players of his generation was firmly established. Brett became British Open Trombone Solo Champion from 1993-5 and studied with Professor David King. Brett’s first solo recording “Bone Idyll” accompanied by Fairey’s and released in 1996 gained much critical acclaim, his advisor at this time being Denis Wick.In 2000 Brett began studies at the Royal Northern

College of Music studying with Chris Houlding, John Iveson and John Miller and joined the Black Dyke Band. Under the Direction of Dr Nicholas Childs, Brett has played on over 100 CD’s, and highlights included trips to the USA, Bermuda and Australia.Brett has won the All England Masters and Australian ‘Nationals’ twice, the Europeans and British Open Championships three times, the National Championships of Great Britain five times and the English Nationals three times. Brett launched an international magazine for trombone players in 2014.Pursuing a hectic playing schedule Brett enjoys presenting workshops specialising in solo performance. He has been guest trombone tutor on Star Lake Music camp near New York, the National Youth Band of Great Britain, and the Swiss National Youth Band. He is currently trombone tutor of the National Children’s Brass Band of Great Britain, and the International Brass Band Summer School in Swansea. As well as Course Director on the Bolsover Summer School and Northern Brass Band Trust and in 2014 was Artistic Director for the Singapore Trombone Festival.Having associations with many youth bands in the North of England, Brett has achieved contest success with Northop, Ratby and Longridge bands. As an adjudicator Brett has judged many competitions and festivals including the ITA in the USA and the National Solo Championships in Switzerland. In the brass band arena he has adjudicated at many association contests, the Australian and New Zealand National Championships, and numerous Regional Area Championships.

Simon Howell Bass Tutor

After studying for his Bachelor of Music at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, with Sean O’Neill (WNO), Simon accepted a Scholarship to study at The Royal Academy of Music, London, under Patrick Harrild (London Symphony Orchestra). During his time

at the Academy he won various brass prizes including the Mark Elliot Brass Prize and the MA Maud Morgan Award.Simon enjoys playing with a wide range of professional ensembles which has seen him perform regularly on live broadcasts on BBC Radio, Channel 4, S4C and ITV Television and various session recordings for TV commercials including "Mcdonalds". Concert tours of USA, Canada and Europe have seen him perform in some of the world’s finest concert halls with many top artists and celebrities including Bryn Terfel, Elton John, John Owen Jones, Katherine Jenkins, Hayley Westenra, Rick Wakeman, Sir Roger Moore and Dame Felicity Lott. Simon is an extra with some of the countries finest orchestras.

David Thornton Course Director/Euphonium Tutor

Dr. David Thornton is regarded as one of the foremost euphonium players and teachers of his generation and has a global reputation. His work as a soloist, conductor and educator is renowned throughout the brass playing world to have a distinct hallmark of extreme virtuosity, professionalism and an ability to connect with audiences like few others in his field.His work within the brass

band world has seen him at the top flight for almost twenty years. He has held solo euphonium positions with the Fairey Band, Black Dyke, Brighouse & Rastrick and Foden’s, having won five National titles, three British Opens and one European Championship during this time. In December 2016, David was appointed as the Musical Director of the Brighouse & Rastrick Band.Considering David’s relatively young age, his achievements in education are also quite remarkable. He is the Senior Tutor in Brass Band Studies at the RNCM, as well as teaching euphonium and chamber music at Chetham's School of Music. His current and former students already hold principal positions in many leading bands around the UK.

David Thornton is a Sterling Musical Instruments performing artist and consultant and plays exclusively on the Sterling Virtuoso Euphonium.

Mark Wilkinson Cornet Tutor

Mark started playing the cornet aged 6 with the Ellenbrook and Boothstown Band before joining the Walkden Band. When Mark was 13 he joined the Besses Boys Band on principal cornet where he stayed until he was 18. During this time Mark was appointed principal cornet with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.

In 1992 Mark accepted Howard Snell’s offer to

become principal cornet with the Britannia Building Society Band (now Foden’s) a position he still holds to date. Since 1992 Mark has been privileged to win every major title with Foden’s including the British Open, National Finals, European Championships, Swiss, French and American Opens as well as numerous victories at the All England Masters Contest, the North West Area Contest and Brass in Concert entertainment competitions.Mark enjoyed 3 years as the cornet tutor with the ‘National Children’s Band of Great Britain’ and has been an entrance examiner and cornet tutor with the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain since 2000. In 2010 Mark became ‘Visiting Cornet Tutor’ at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and has recently been appointed Cornet Tutor at the ‘University of Salford.’In 2009 Mark was voted by the banding public as the ‘2009 4barsrest Player of the Year’. Mark is an ‘Associate Member of ABBA’. (Association of Brass Band Adjudicators).Mark is sharing the role as Course Director on the Bolsover Summer School 2014 and will also appear in the final concert as Guest Soloist.

Steve Jones Percussion Tutor

Steve Jones started his playing career in 1984 at the age of 9, joining Bream Silver Band in the Royal Forest Of Dean under the tutelage of local drummer Dave Rudge. He then moved to Coleford Town Band for

three years before being approached by Flowers Band in 1989. Steve spent twenty one years at Flowers winning eight West of England Championship titles and claiming the Grand Shield three times. In 2010 he decided it was time for a change of scenery and moved to Tredegar Town Band in Wales for a year before joining the worlds No 1 ranked band Cory. In the two years that followed Steve performed in many concerts and broadcasts at home and in Europe and a two week concert tour of Australia. In 2013, he was part of the team at Cory that won both the coveted European and National Brass Band Championships, narrowly missing out on a grand slam of titles by claiming the runner up spot at that years British Open and World Championships. In 2015 Steve toured to Australia again, this time with the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band. He is now a freelance tutor of drums and percussion and performs with many different ensembles throughout the UK.

Paul Bennett Flugel & Horn Tutor

Paul Bennett is the Principal Horn player with the Flowers Band from Gloucester, a position he assumed in July 2015 following 2 years as Solo Horn with the Fairey Band. Hailing from the picturesque Peak District National Park, Paul started playing the cornet

with Tideswell band at the tender age of 12, but quickly moved onto Tenor Horn, joining the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain at 15. He attended five courses, under such luminaries as Elgar Howarth, James Watson, James Scott and Dr Roy Newsome, which culminated in a memorable Royal Albert Hall performance at the 1989 Sir Henry Wood Proms, conducted by Sir Charles Groves. Paul studied music at Salford College and the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, where he graduated with BMus (Hons), under the expert tutelage of Howard Snell, Sandy Smith and Gordon Higginbottom. Paul has appeared as Solo Horn with every major brass band in the UK, as well as appearing twice with Michigan’s famous Brass Band of Battle Creek. During his time with Britannia Building Society (now Fodens) and Desford Colliery bands, Paul’s contest successes include the British Open, National Championships of Great Britain, All England Masters, European Championships, and Swiss Open Championships, to name a few. Paul’s skills as a player, soloist and tutor means he is regularly sought after by leading bands worldwide, notably in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the USA. Paul is regarded as one of the leading Tenor Horn players in the UK, is a previous ‘Horn Champion of Great Britain’ and in 2014, won every solo contest he entered during, including the Fodens Solo Contest in November, where he was awarded the ‘Besson International Award’ and the opportunity to undertake a 2-week Solo tour of the USA, where he performed as guest soloist with the River City and Illinois Brass Bands.

Carole CromptonCourse Administrator

In 2005 Carole launched the Bolsover Festival of Brass, a brass band entertainment contest which is one of the leading events of it’s kind in the world today attracting some 2,500 participating musicians and audiences each year.

The Brass Band Summer School concept grew as a result of Carole’s passion to support the brass band movement and its following.

Programme CostIn order to offer the best possible fees we have broken down the charges to make the summer school

appealing to non residents and partners who may wish to accompany those attending the summer school.

Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Course FeesResidential all inclusive rate - £475 per person(includes participation in all band rehearsal and tutorials, accommodation, all meals). This is based on 2

persons sharing a twin room. Should you wish to book a single room then an additional supplement of £150

per week will apply.

Non residential rate - £325(Includes participation in all band rehearsal and tutorials, meals)

Non participating guests - £325(includes accommodation, all meals). This is again based on 2 persons sharing a twin room. Those requiring

a single room will be required to pay an additional supplement of £125 for the week.
