continued report from Yvonne Hutchinson

RETIREMENT OF OUR MUCH LOVED CROSSING SUPERVISORIt is with mixed feelings that I would like to announce that Fred, will be retiring as the school crossing supervisor at the end of this term. School crossing supervisors become valued members of our community as they not only keep children safe, they become friends children look forward to chatting with each day and sharing their news and thoughts together. We will inform you of when and how we can celebrate this occasion in the next couple of weeks.

SAFETYWe are continuing to remind the children about safety in and around the playgrounds at school. As we know children can be very impulsive and accidents can happen, but in order to minimize these we are encouraging children to be careful when walking around the buildings and around blind corners as you never know who is coming the other way. We are also reminding children to look where they are going and not walking backwards, especially around the adventure playgrounds.

The school grounds are monitored by staff daily from 8:30am – 8:50 am and again from 3:10pm – 3:30pm.

ABSENCESWe kindly request that you inform the school of your child/ren’s absence by 9:15 am, contact the school on 9395 1758 or send a message on Xuno. This will help us to reduce the SMS cost to the school as fewer SMS messages will need to be sent daily. Thank you to those parents/guardians who are already using the XUNO message service or informing the school of their child/ren’s absence.

Have a great week a head.

Student Led Conferences

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The Student Led Conferences will take place on Thursday the 27th of June. Below is an outline that explains what the Student Led Conferences are and how they are conducted.

What is the Student Led Conference?Student Led Conferences are an integral part of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) helping stu-dents to take ownership and responsibility for their learning. They involve the child and the parent talking together about the learning and are not run like a traditional teacher/parent interview. We hold these conferences each June, to help students re-alise their goals and set new ones for the remain-der of the year. On Thursday, the 27th of June your child will be leading the conference with you and developing their responsibility for their learning by sharing and discussing samples of work they have chosen. Please encourage/prompt your child as they share their learning with you as we want the Student Led Conference to be successful and pur-poseful for you and your child.

What is the role of the parent?Student-led conferences enable you to gain a clear insight into the kind of work your child is doing and offers you an opportunity to discuss it with your child. Your child will be in charge of leading you through the conference. A few hints to help you before and during the con-ference:• Express positive interest and anticipation about the upcoming conference.• Be on time.• Listen and respond to your child.• Express pride in your child’s growth and prog-ress.• Be positive, offering to help in areas where im-provement is needed.• Recognise that the teacher will be in the room to facilitate and not take charge of the conference.

• Learn more about your child’s learning style and abilities.• Review your child’s previous goals and discuss new ones.• Ask questions about the portfolio samples. Some question prompts will be offered to support parents.• Comment on the learning demonstrated through the conference, providing positive feedback.

What is the role of the teacher?• To be a facilitator in the conference process.• To be an observer.• To help identify strengths and areas for improvement for your child and discuss some future goals if appropriate.• To encourage, praise and support to your child by offering prompts as needed.

What is the role of the student?• Share their own learning. • Evaluate their own progress.• Be actively involved.• Discuss and reflect on their samples of work with their parents. • Identify strengths and areas for improvement.

As part of the IB PYP assessment, the Student Led Conference represents the value of the student being at the centre of the learning process. The Student Led Conference invites students to be more verbal and take responsibility for their learning. We hope you enjoy this rewarding experience with your child.

Portfolios are sent home for viewing following the conference. Parents will have the opportunity to view the pieces of work in the portfolio over the Term 2 holidays. Portfolios will then need to be re-turned at the beginning of Term 3.

On-line bookings will be open shortly and will be announced through our communications sources. Please make sure you book an appointment time with the classroom teacher and with any specialist areas of the curriculum.

I really enjoyed the excursion at NGV and ACCA! The two galleries were packed with information, images, sculptures, paintings and artwork made with interesting materials. At NGV, we got to run our hands over the water wall. At ACCA, we got to use our creativity and make little sculptures. Everyone had a chance to state their opinion about an artwork. I think that everyone had an awesome day and learned heaps of new things!

Matilda

On Thursday the 6th of June, Year 5 went to the NGV (National Gallery of Victoria) and ACCA (Australian Centre of Contemporary Art). At both of these galleries we saw many pieces of artwork. At the NGV we saw Chinese contemporary art including one in the ‘White Rabbit Series’ called Density. It consisted of 6 geometrical shapes made out of wood, steel and books! It was crazy that the shapes were actually made out of books. And not just any books; the ones with the most wisdom and knowledge which was pretty cool. I think it’s safe to say that the art excursion taught us a lot and was very (when I say very, I mean VERY, VERY, VERY) fun.

Congratulations to the following students who have received certificates this week:

Bronze 10 deposits: : Mannan A, Chloe E, Aileen F, Bianca K, Puja L, Nadine T, Lachlan T, Alfred W, Annie Y.

Saving regularly is an important habit to get into, whether you are saving a little or a lot. Keep up the great work and remember to bring your deposit book each Wednesday until the end of the term.

At the request of the Commonwealth Bank, school banking must be processed and bank books returned to students on the same day. This is to maintain the security and privacy of every student’s banking and personal information. From the beginning of next term students will be requested to bring their bankbooks in on Thursdays instead of Wednesdays. If you have any questions about this please email us. Thank you for your continued support of the Seabrook school banking program.
