he Kaleida Health Foundation is a not-for-profit charitable organization supporting Buffalo General Hospital, DeGraff Memorial Hospital, Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital, Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, and the Visiting Nursing Association of Western New York.

The Kaleida Health Foundation, by fostering charitable relationships and increasing philanthropy, supports Kaleida Health in its mission to advance the health of our community every day through exceptional care, education and research.

Through the generous contributions of our everyday heroes, including individuals, physicians, corporations, foundations and our employees, the Kaleida Health Foundation is able to support state-of-the-art equipment, research, education, community health and wellness programs, and charity care.

I t is an exciting time at Kaleida Health, and we at the Kaleida Health Foundation are thrilled to be a part of one of Western New York’s great success stories.

Sometimes we get caught up in the business of health care and forget about our underlying goal – to improve the health of people every day. Health care is about people – and it is through the work of our donors, volunteers, charitable foundations, corporations and special friends that we are able to influence the health of our community.

Philanthropy is an integral part of our culture. Countless individuals selflessly give of themselves in order to help their neighbor, effectuate change and contribute to the greater good of society. It is these individuals whom we recognize as our everyday heroes. They are the reason the Dr. Grover W. Wende Lobby was dedicated at Buffalo General Hospital and the Joe Oliverio Hospice Room was dedicated at DeGraff Memorial Hospital, among the numerous other projects and initiatives highlighted in the following pages.

As we look forward to bigger and better things, I can only imagine the limitless possibilities that can be achieved as a result of your past and continuing generosity.

T hroughout the years I have been in Western New York, I have been continually impressed by the warmth, generosityand commitment of this community.

Time and again, individuals have come forward to unselfishly offer their time, talent and treasure in support of our patients, physicians and nurses.

From the “pink coat” auxilians who offer a warm smile to guests, to the business community who support events from which the proceeds fund needed programs and equipment, these people are vital to our mission. It is through their generosity that we continue to provide excellent health care to friends and neighbors.

B ecoming a Hero through her LegacyRhea Stewart Wende defined her legacy while honoring her late father-in-law, Dr. Grover W. Wende (1867-1926). Dr. Wende, a nationally recognized skin specialist and distinguished Buffalo General Hospital physician, passed away in 1926 after being fatally struck by a trolley car.

Through a $1 million bequest to the Kaleida Health Foundation, Mrs. Wende changed the look and feel of Buffalo General. As a result of Mrs. Wende’s generosity, the renovated Dr. Grover W. Wende Lobby at Buffalo General Hospital was dedicated December 9, 2004.

HSince 1885, the Visiting Nursing Association (VNA) has cared for patients – from newborns to the elderly. Today, the generous support of the community translates to more than $530,000 per year in charity care for our most vulnerable patients who are under or not insured. In fact, the VNA of WNY’s Charity Care Program is now 83% larger than the average for VNA’s across the United States.

eroic efforts for Home Care

WWomen’s Board members are heroes who support Kaleida Health patients and families.

The Junior Board awarded $110,000 to 30 departments within Buffalo General Hospital to improve patient care, advance research, and purchase equipment.

The Deaconess Center Women’s Board provided nursing home residents with potted flowers and plants, which brightened patients’ rooms and spirits.

Through special events and gift shop sales, the DeGraff Hospital Auxiliary raised funds to purchase hospital transport equipment, enhance the grounds, and award continuing health care education scholarships.

The Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Women’s Board renovated the Skilled Nursing Residents’ Lounge. With comfortable furniture and media center, the room is now a great place for residents and their families.

The Women’s Board of Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital renovated two surgical waiting rooms, and continued to support the hospital’s expansion project.

Heroic VolunteerDeGraff Memorial Hospital’s newly renovated hospice suite was dedicated in honor of a hero whose life and legacy lives on. Joe Oliverio’s zest for life and unwavering commitment as a DeGraff volunteer for 15 years, despite his own battle with cancer at age 84, continues to inspire others.

The DeGraff Community Council lead the effort to transform two patient rooms to replicate the look and feel of a residential bedroom, complete with an adjoining family room for patients who need hospice care, with funds dedicated to DeGraff from bequests made to the Kaleida Health Foundation.

The new suite is designed to do just what Joe did at DeGraff – comfort the staff, patients and their families. Symbolically, the space named in his honor will carry on his noble work for years to come.

LSyde A. Taheri, M.D., who practices primarily at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle, is receiving worldwide accolades for his revolutionary invention. His research, funded in part by the Kaleida Health Foundation, led to the development of the Talent Thoracic Stent Graft, a device that allows patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms to avoid major abdominal surgery. Instead, a synthetic graft supported by a metal stent is threaded through the leg and released at the aneurysm site, which stabilizes or bypass the ballooning site in the aorta.

HRetired Congressman Jack Quinn and Dennis Rivera, president of Service Employees International Union 1199, were honored with Kaleida Health’s inaugural “Spirit Award.” The award was given to these heroes at Kaleida Ball 2004 in appreciation of their “significant and spirited support of Kaleida Health” as it “seeks to improve the health of the Western New York community.”

One of Western New York’s most prestigious black tie events, the Kaleida Ball has raised over $2.5 million to support diabetes, geriatrics, and cardiac care throughout Kaleida Health. This year’s proceeds helped support the emergency room expansion at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital.

Much has changed since Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital opened its doors in 1974. Today, it serves the needs of a much larger and diverse community from young families to those residing in assisted living facilities.
