Our Lady, Mother of the Church Mission Statement We, the members of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, are drawn together through baptism as a part of the Body of Christ. We are a caring Catholic community, working together as instruments through which Jesus, our risen Lord and Head, continues His mission. Linked to Christ as His Body, we believe that the risen Jesus still proclaims God’s word, gives thanks and praise, welcomes, nurtures, comforts and reaches out to all people. Using the hands and hearts of the members of the parish, with a growing sense that each of us is gifted and has an important part to play in our Parish, Church and World, we renew our call: ♦ to be a Parish diligent about Word and Eucharist, the primary source of our nourishment and spiritual growth... ♦ to be “missioned” - sent forth in the person of Jesus, to bring His Word and Eucharist to family, friends, neighbors and workplace... ♦ to reach out to the sick, the homebound, the persecuted, the lonely, the poor and the bereaved… ♦ to find time to share laughter, joy, friendship, at times, tears; and always to share the goodness of each other...

Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ, Are we afraid to lose something by following Jesus? Are we afraid to take up some load with us? Are we afraid to carry a smartphone all the time? Even people running try to have the lightest clothes and shoes, but many

times carry a smart device. Is this not the same logic when Jesus tells us about taking up the cross? If you are not ready to spend time for prayer, you will have no connection with me; if you are not ready to take on the burden of the commandments, you will not identify with me; if you don’t read my messages in the Bible you will walk in darkness. So why are we ready to carry many other loads in our life, and yet are afraid of those which bring us blessings? More than twenty years ago I was on a bicycle trip with youth for almost two weeks. The trip took place in the area of mountains and hills in the south of Poland. One of participants took an enormous amount of baggage. As a result, he left almost all the time be-hind the group. His peers advised him to ship home some of his belongings. They helped him to find the box and post office. He was so eager to follow their good advice that even before closing the box he took off his stinky socks and put them on the top. I have no idea what im-pression this made on his mom when she opened the box, but anyway our trip changed dramat-ically. After that the group traveled together. We moved smoothly at the same pace. Like the youth traveler, we require great wis-dom to know what we need to do to reach the goal, and to know when there is a stone at-tached to the leg preventing us from the goal. Jesus is our good friend. He advises us – take up the cross, give up something else. May God bless you, Fr. Andrew

Ministers of Care Needed!

There are many within our Faith community who are unable to attend the communal Celebra-tion of the Eucha-rist. Like that of the Good Samaritan, Ministers of Care visit our homebound Parishioners proving a compas-sionate presence and listening ear and share the Sacrament of the Eucharist. In addition, they continue to provide the homebound with the connection to the Parish by sharing a Bulletin and discussing upcoming events. If the Holy Spirit is calling you to this Minis-try, formal training will be provided. This con-sists of five consecutive Tuesday evening ses-sions, two hours each, at Presence St. Benedict Nursing and Rehabilitation Center beginning September 24th through October 22nd. Con-tact Terri Kaisling, Faith Community Nurse at 773-625-3368.Ext. 28 for more information.

Bible Study Come to Hayes Center this Wednesday, September 11, at 9:30 a.m. to discuss chapters 13 through 17 of the Gospel according to John.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy because it is during the Eucharist that the Church is most true to its identity, expresses its integrity, and discovers its vocation. Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians celebrate essentially the iden-tical liturgy, with only very slight variations. It is a fairly complex ritual weaving together three separate layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, often hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a deacon in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experience, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God’s people singing prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven touching earth when the Church gathers to celebrate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catholics were encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was “full, conscious, and active,” a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contemplation, and by the actions of bowing, signing with the cross, and chanting that are required of the assembly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key values that have been obscured in our own Church and are slowly being recovered. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend’s Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or en-joyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year’s Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driv-ing schedules needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some reli-gious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend’s scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For in-stance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with “timid deliberations” and “unsure plans.” Paul challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to “let the good you do be vol-untary.” Jesus instructs “great crowds” traveling with him—including us—on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn weekend, our scriptures describe disciples’ lifelong labors. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
