USC posted a convincing victory at the MPSF indoor championships in February, defeating runner-up BYU by 21.5 points and third place Oregon by 42. The Tro-jans (37) then went on to finish second at NCAA in-doors behind champion Florida (40).

Of the 20 events set to take place this weekend, Oregon and USC enter as league leaders in five events apiece, followed by three from Arizona, two each from Stanford and WASHINGTON STATE, and one apiece for CALI-FORNIA, UCLA and WASHINGTON.

Anchored by Bowerman candidates Michael Norman and Rai Benjamin, USC holds league leads in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, the 800-meter run, 400-meter hurdles and 4x100-meter relay.

Norman is the lone athlete to enter the Pac-12 all-time performance leaderboard during this outdoor season, doing so with a headwind time of 20.06 seconds in the 200 at ASU’s Sun Angel Classic in April. That time is the third-best nationally entering the Conference championships, while Norman’s 44.53 400 at the Mt. SAC Relays paces the country to date. Norman is the defending Pac-12 400 champion.

Benjamin is expected to push Norman in the 400 as well as repeat as the league’s 400-meter hurdles cham-pion won while at UCLA in 2017.

Oregon will look to counter in the sprints (100, 110h), middle distance (1,500m), long jump and javelin. Paced by Sam Prakel and James West, the Ducks own the nation’s top 1,500-meter squad.

In total, 11 event champions from 2017 are back to defend their titles.

This season’s back-and-forth battle between the Ducks and Trojans began over the winter as USC (122 points) captured the MPSF indoor championship in February, ahead of second place Stanford (98) and third place Oregon (84). The Ducks followed up a fifth-place show-ing at NCAA indoors with 31 points, just edging the sev-enth-place Trojans (28) and eighth-place Cardinal (24).

The quartet of Oregon (six), USC (five), Stanford (four) and Arizona State (three) lead the way in 18 of the Championships’ 20 events, with UTAH steeplechaser Grayson Murphy and UCLA high jumper Kendall Gus-tafson the only outliers. The Ducks and Trojans also litter the league’s season leaderboard in many of the sprints.

Behind Bowerman candidate Kendall Ellis and reign-ing Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Anna Cockrell, USC owns the nation’s best 400-meter dash and 100-meter hurdle squads.

ASU’s Ewen is the defending champion of and current-ly leads the nation in three throwing events, the dis-cus, hammer and shot put, the latter two of which she owns the all-time collegiate records. She will attempt to repeat as Championships Athlete of the Meet and du-plicate her throwing three-peat with anticipated chal-lenges from Stanford’s Valarie Allman and Lena Giger.

Stanford is the nation’s top team in the 1,500, while Cardinal javelin thrower Mackenzie Little is the only Pac-12 athlete not named Ewen to lead the nation in an event this season.

16 individuals and four different relay teams have moved into or up the Pac-12 all-time performance leaderboard so far this outdoor season, highlighted by Oregon’s Lauren Rain Williams, Jessica Hull and Cha-quinn Cook, USC’s Twanisha Terry, Stanford’s Vanessa Fraser and Ewen, Allman, Giger and Little.

EUGENE, Ore. - The OREGON men’s and women’s track & field teams completed their ninth consecutive sweep of the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships on Sunday at historic Hayward Field. It marked the 11th straight team title for the Ducks’ men and the ninth in a row for the UO women.

With its ninth all-time sweep of the Conference championship meet, Oregon surpassed UCLA’s total of eight dual men’s & women’s titles. The Ducks’ men also moved past the Bruins with their 18th overall Conference title.

On the men’s side, No. 7 nationally ranked Oregon amassed 175 points, the third-most ever in the Confer-ence meet and most since 1987. No. 8 ranked USC finished second with 115.5 points and No. 20 UCLA placed third with 101 points. The No. 2 ranked Oregon women recorded the fourth-most points ever in a Pac-12 Championship meet with 189 to post a 54-point victory over No. 3 ranked rival USC. COLORADO dominated with six middle-distance and distance event titles to record its best-ever finishes and highest point totals in both the men’s (fourth, 73 points) and women’s (third, 78) standings since joining the Pac-12.

Sunday’s crowd of 6,778 saw four Pac-12 Championships meet records fall, highlighted by a new hammer throw mark from women’s athlete of the meet Maggie Ewen of ARIZONA STATE and the world’s fastest 200-meter time this year and an all-time Pac-12 record from OREGON’s Deajah Stevens.

Ewen scored a meet-high 30 points for the Sun Devils as she became the first female to win the shot put, hammer and discus at the Pac-12 Championships. She joined UCLA’s Seilala Sua – who tripled in the shot put, discus and javelin in 1999 – as the only women to win three throwing events in the same Conference title meet.

Kyree King amassed a meet-best 22.5 points by winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes – the first Oregon man to dual in those events at the Pac-12 title meet – and running the second leg of the Ducks’ victorious 4x100 relay. He narrowly edged UCLA freshman Isaiah Holmes (22 points) and UO teammates Damarcus Simpson (20.5) and Marcus Chambers (18.5) for athlete of the meet honors.

STANFORD, Calif. - STANFORD senior Harrison Wil-liams rolled to a dominating victory in the decathlon and WASHINGTON STATE redshirt senior Alissa Brooks-Johnson matched the Conference record with her third career heptathlon crown at the 2018 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships Combined Events at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field on Sunday.

Both Brooks-Johnson and Williams finished in the top two in every event to secure 10 points for their teams heading into next weekend’s Pac-12 Track & Field Championships at Stanford.

Also the Pac-12 heptathlon champion in 2015 and 2017, Brooks-Johnson joins former Cougar Ellannee Richardson (2001-03), STANFORD’s Tracye Lawyer (1997-99), ARIZONA STATE’s Jacquelyn Johnson (2004, 2006, 2008) and OREGON’s Brianne Theisen (2009-10, 2012) as the only three-time winners of the event.

Despite her consistency, which included a PR in the long jump (5.89m/19-4) and second-place finish in the javelin (41.60m/136-6) to open Sunday’s events, Brooks-Johnson actually trailed entering the 800-me-ter run finale.

However, Brooks-Johnson left no doubt with victory in the 800, crossing the line in 2:14.81. Her 5,977 points moved her into third on this season’s NCAA perfor-mance list and ninth on the Conference’s all-time list.

There was considerably less drama in the decathlon as Williams cruised to victory by more than 1,600 points to become only the second winner from Stanford along with Travis Clark in 1994. Williams’ winning total of 7,925 points was a season-high and good for fifth-best in the nation to date.

Williams set a lifetime-best in claiming the discus (43.01m/141-1), won the 110-meter hurdles (14.44) and pole vault (5.25m/17-2.75), and finished second in both the javelin (45.92m/150-8) and 1,500-meter run (4:37.91) on Sunday to post one of the most domi-nant decathlon victories in league history.
