November 4th & 5th, 2017 San Pedro Catholic Church THE GREATEST AMONG US Whom do you admire? Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today’s Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life in service to the world.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION What is the name of the pope’s cathedral? If you said the Vatican, or St. Peter’s, you were off by a few miles, since the answer is the Basilica of St. John, the Lateran, the “Mother Church” of all the churches of the world and the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome. It takes its name from the Lateran family, the Trumps of their day, who somehow ran afoul of the Emperor Nero. He seized all their property, including their vast Roman palace and estate. We don’t know how Plautius displeased Nero so badly, but eventually all the Lateran property came to Constantine, the first Christian emperor, through his wife, Fausta. Early in the fourth century, when Christianity was at last legalized, Constantine gave the property to the church. Soon the great meeting halls were expanded and adapted. Over the centuries, the church building has been sacked by armies, ruined by fire, torn down, and rebuilt. The oldest and most unchanged part of the Lateran is a vast, separate baptistery with steps leading down to a huge green basalt pool. Imagine what a triumphal moment the dedication of this public church building was for a community that had worshiped in secret for so long! This Thursday’s feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica is really about the tradition of consecrating space for worship, and so by extension, a feast for your parish church building and, given the beautiful second reading, for its baptistery as well.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading- Do we not have one father? Did not the one God create us? (Malachi 1:14b — 2:2b, 8-10). Psalm – In you, Lord, I have found my peace (Psalm 131). Second Reading – You have received not a human word but the word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13). Gospel-Call no one your father on earth; you have but one Father, the one in heaven (Matthew 23:1-12).

Thanksgiving Food Baskets Beginning October 28th and continuing through November 19th San Pedro will be collecting non-perishable foods for Thanksgiving Baskets. Cereals, canned meats, pasta and sauces, rice, canned vegetables/fruits, and other staples are needed. Each year we are able to give generous baskets and food gift certificates to needy members of our San Pedro family and other Upper Keys families that are in need. Last year we provided for 30 families. Due to hurricane Irma we are expecting even more requests for assistance. Please place your donations in the display on the left side of the altar. There will also be a basket available for those who choose to give a monetary gift for this cause as each needy family will also be provided with a gift card for perishable foods. Contact Carolyn 394-8887 if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued support!

RCIA Group will start meeting on Sundays at 10:00, after 9:00am Mass in the Office’s Conference Room for 1 hour. If you want to know more about the

Catholic Faith and Theology or someone you know wants to become Catholic, we invite you to join us in this Journey of Faith. If you are interested, please sign the

November is National Diabetes Month Every 17 seconds someone is diagnosed with diabetes, a disease which kills more people each year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. The American Diabetes Association’s website states that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless steps are taken to stop this disease. Early detection is critical. This is why San Pedro Catholic Church is hosting Life Line Screening, the nation’s leading provider of preventive health screenings on Tuesday, November 28, 2017. One of the tests is a simple blood test for glucose (sugar) which can determine if a person is at risk of developing diabetes. Other screenings include tests to check for blocked carotid arteries, atrial fibrillation, and high blood pressure, which are the three leading risk factors for stoke. Nearly 800,000 strokes will occur this year, taking a life approximately every four minutes. There are also tests to check for abdominal aortic aneurysms and PAD, also called “hardening of the arteries” in the legs. Diabetes is a major risk factor for stroke and is directly related to Peripheral Arterial Disease. Recommendations for people with diabetes included a PAD test starting at age 50. Screening packages start at $139. Single tests cost around $70. For more information regarding the screenings or to schedule an appointment, call 1-888-653-6441 or go to www.lifelinescreening.com/communitycircle or text the circle to 797979. Pre-registration is required.

“Whoever exalts himself will be hum-bled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” MATTHEW 23:12

Jesus gave His life to serve, not to be served. Putting other’s needs before our own needs is an indication of a mature disciple, of following Jesus’ footstep. Humility is a sign of real strength. By putting other’s needs first, we affirm to the world that we are putting our complete trust in God. When we align our thoughts and actions with God’s plan for us,
