In today’s society, little boys and girls are stereotyped. Boys are thought to be tough jocks, emotionless and powerful. Girls are thought to be sensitive housewives, weak and emotional. Although, not every little boy or girl lives by these stereotypes. In Arizona there was a young person named Leo. He wanted to follow his passion for cooking. He would spend his free time reading cookbooks. Leo

watched cooking shows and took notes. He often spent hours in the kitchen cooking up new

dishes. Experimenting with cinnamon and making treats was his hobby. In the beginning, Leo’s dad didn’t necessarily approve. Leo’s dad believed in the stereotypes. He thought his son should play soccer with his friends. When Leo would showcase his dishes, other peers and family members would give strange reactions. They would stare in confusion. Through their reactions and words, Leo questioned his passion for cooking. He wondered if he should cook or follow his father’s wishes.

Don’t stereotype a dream.

Page 11: 8teen

One evening, Leo’s dad came into the kitchen to find a slice of milk chocolate cake on the table. After a long day of work, he was in need of a delicious treat. He couldn’t pass up the chance to taste the cake. With one bite he fell in love with the sponge like dreamy snack. Leo walked into the kitchen and was surprised. He was filled with joy and fear. He asked, “How’s the cake dad?” “It’s great,” responded Leo’s dad. “Um…Dad, you just ate cake that I finished baking,” Leo said. After a moment of

silence Leo’s dad finally said, “Yum. I have to say son, I’m proud of you.” He patted the seat beside him and said, “Come over here and join me. Maybe cooking is better than soccer for you.” Leo smiled from ear to ear. When coming across anyone stepping out of their stereotypical

role, take the chance to step in their shoes. Try to see what makes them happy. It’s important to support others in their choices in life by being compassionate. It might take some time letting go of those stereotypes to get to acceptance. Leo’s dad took one bite and changed his mind. Now Leo can make his dream his reality.
