LeMSICThe Lebanese Medical Students’ Interna-tional Committee (LeMSIC) is a student run, non governmental, non-political and not-for-profit association represent-ing medical students across several uni-versities in Lebanon.

LeMSIC was founded in 1964 and soon after integrated the International Feder-ation of Medical Stddents’ Associations (IFMSA), which is a recognized non gov-ernmental organization within the United Nations’ system and the World Health Organization (WHO). IFMSA is also the student chapter of the World Medical Asociation (WMA).

We owe our career, ourselves and more importantly our patients and community to always take a step further, ask further, look further ... we owe it to this great vocation called medicine to nurture it with as much research as we can because that is what fuels it to give more. For medicine is not only to treat, but to cure; not only to cure, but to prevent disease; not only to prevent, but to understand who we are and how to deal with it.

MoMoreover, Going from national to international scale is never an easy step to take. However, this year we managed to promote LeMSIC’s Research Day among medical students from more than 100 countries and to get the first place among 135 projects done by medical students from all around the globe. This gives us, SCORE members, the energy to work even harder on improving our events and enlarging our scope of work.

ThisThis day is dedicated to the young researchers across Lebanon, whether students, postdoctoral research fellows, interns or residents who are devoting valuable time to their research projects and the advancement of science. This day was created so as to support their inquisitive minds and give them the opportunity to share their discoveries and defend what they have contributed to the research community.

Finally,Finally, we would like to thank everyone who supported Research Day 2014. In particular, we thank Dr. Anwar Bikhazi, Dr. Mona Nabulsi, Dr. Zeina Kanafani, Dr. Rami Mahfouz, Dr. Rana Sharara-Chami, Dr. Labib Ghulmiyyah, Dr. Abdo Jurjus, Dr. Hiba El-Hajj, Dr. Ali Bazarbachi, Dr. Ghazi Zaatari, Dr. Nisrine Rizk, Dr. Georges Nemer, Dr. Kamal Badr, Dr. Assaad Eid, Dr. Fouad Boulos, Dr. Diana Jaalouk, Dr. Fadi Bitar, Dr. Noel Ghanem, Dr. Abdallah Rbeiz,Rbeiz, Dr. Fuad Ziyadeh  and every member of the Organizing Committee. Without their continuous and unconditional support, this event would not have been possible.

The Lebanese Medical Students’ International Committee

(LeMSIC) is a non-political, non-profit, student-run organisation

that represents medical students Lebanon. It is a full National

Member Organisation (NMO) in the International Federation of

Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA).

LeMSICLeMSIC has six standing committees that work on issues related to

medical education, public health, reproductive health including

HIV/AIDS, human rights & peace, and research & clinical

exchange. It has grown to embrace more than 500 active

medical students across 6 universities.

ThThrough its various events & activities, LeMSIC aims to introduce

medical students to global health; promote humanitarian ideals &

medical ethics; empower medical students & enable them to use

their knowledge for the benefit of society. It also provides medical

students to broaden their social and cultural perspectives.

Page 9: 8th Annual SCORE Research Day Booklet

The Standing Committee On Research Exchange (SCORE) aims at

promoting research among medical students. Through a myriad of

activities, it tries to bridge the gap between professors & students,

while pushing the latter to be more involved in research. SCORE

recognizes the importance of research as part of students’ careers

nowadays & helps them develop their inquisitive minds.

ThThrough its Exchange Program, SCORE sends more than 20 students

per year to different countries to work in a lab for a month & become

familiar with research in cross-cultural settings.

Through its Research Workshop, SCORE tries to guide medical

students toward a successful research career & helps them become

good consumers as well as good producers of research.

The Lebanese Association for the Advancement of Science (LAAS) had, since its establishment in 1968, a clear scientific mission, which is to enhance knowledge, promote scientific research & create the appropriate atmosphere for this purpose. In order to accomplish this mission, the Academy strives to turn it into achievable goals as part of plans, programs & activities.

TheThe Executive Board includes Dr. Naim Ouaini (President); Dr. Hassan Al Charif (Secretary); Dr. Abdo Jurjus (Treasurer); Dr. Mahmoud Korek, Dr. Fadi Hage Chehade, Dr. Karim Echtay, Dr. Georges Eid, Dr. Roger Lteif, and Dr. Nashat Mansour.

The Board has set a plan of action aiming at instigating a modern scientific renaissance. This plan includes:

1.1. Promoting knowledge through scientific research, including Human & Social Sciences on both the projects & achievements levels2. Encouraging common scientific research between universities & research centers, and exchanging professors & researchers3. Supporting continuous modernization of scientific education curricula at various stages4.4. Conducting lectures, workshops & conferences to exhibit the results of scientific research

differences. Early, 6-month mortality was similar for PCI-s vs. No-PCI [n=10 (5.2%) vs n=7 (3.7%); p=0.456]. PCI-s patients, however, experienced worse intermediate term mortality reaching a maximal difference at 2.5 years after CABG.[Fig-top] This difference in survival favoring No-PCI patients was systematically narrowed after 4 years reaching equivalence at about 7 years after CABG. These results reflected a time-varying relative risk of death (PCI-s/No-PCI) that was particularly increased between 6 and 30 months after suafter surgery. [Figure]

In order to fulfill its mission and involve students in research,

SCORE compiles the following database, which includes all

active research projects across all SCORE-affiliated universities

and hospitals. Please note that not all physicians/professors

accept to have students on board their projects and, if they do,

they might have some restrictions as to the students’ level of

education.

ShouldShould you have any inquiry, please do not hesitate to contact

us via email at the following address: [email protected]

The SCORE National Officer, Local Officers and Secretaries would like to thank all medical students who have contacted physicians and professors in order to obtain the information listed in the database above.

We would like to mention that all reasonable effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information. However, we this database is circulated with no guarantee of any sort.

LAU Medical Students are privileged to be a part of SCORE-

LeMSIC, a national team made up of fellow research interested

colleagues from other Universities.

SCORE-LeMSICSCORE-LeMSIC has made LAU medical students part of national

family. This opportunity to meet and work with different medical

schools is unique to SCORE- LeMSIC and is important as a definite

step in the right direction for LAU. In the spirit of camaraderie,

members can reach out with their ideas, present their work on

research and organize and participate in events in a broader

national community.

FurtheFurthermore, the research exchange program offered by SCORE

allows members to pursue their interest in research by traveling

abroad, working on projects of their interests while living an

exchange experience that is sure to be one of a kind.

ThisThis year, SCORE at LAU was able to complete a research

database, a small yet very important project, approved by the IRB

at LAU, to share it at the Research Day for the first time giving other

universities access to research work conducted at LAU. LAU being

part of the Research Day for the first time has given LAU students

the opportunity to listen to colleagues presenting research

projects conducted at other universities/hospitals.

ThisThis collaboration among students all over the nation brings the

universities closer together creating a big and productive network

with new contacts and more research opportunities for everyone.

We are not only helping in promoting research within Lebanon but

also providing Lebanon with a chance to increase its worldwide

research impact.

AllAll the work done by SCORE-LeMSIC aims at promoting Research

and providing opportunities for members across Lebanon. LAU stu-

dents could not have passed up the opportunity to be a part of it.
