Fall Semester Awards Assembly held January 7th

The 7/8 Fall Awards Assembly was held on January 7th at 2:00. Seventh and eighth grade students were recognized at this awards assembly. Athletic letters and certificates were presented for participation in Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Girls Basketball, and Wrestling. Academic recognition was also given to students who have achieved membership on the school Honor Roll as well as those who have earned High Honors and Kaw Honors. Students were also presented Exemplary Certificates for their achievement on the last state assessment.

Travel Program: Peru - Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands - February 8th @ 1:00

For over 30 years, Randy Nadler has traveled the globe. Studying and photographing cultures and wildlife for the purpose of putting together educational multimedia presentations for students of all ages.

His main focus for schools is to provide a fun and also very educational cultural arts program to enhance the guidelines provided by the state department of education for both geography and social studies.

Randy's presentations are approximately one hour in length and consist of using all state of the art digital projection with still images, video and audio with Randy giving a narrative to teach as much as possible in this learning experience.

Please feel free to join us for this informative lecture on February 8th in the PLHS Little Theatre beginning at 1:00.

Book Fair Scheduled to begin January 26th

The PLMS book fair will be open Wednesday, January 26th through Monday February 7th during school hours. Parents and students may also visit the book fair on the evening of both Parent-Teacher Conferences scheduled for February 2nd and 3rd. Be sure to stop by and stock up on reading material. New!! Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conferences for the district are scheduled on February 2nd from 4:00 to 8:00 and on February 3rd from 2:00 to 8:00. Parents who attend Parent Teacher Conferences will receive a homework pass from each teacher with whom they conference. Your child will then be able to use this pass for a teacher approved assignment. Thank you for being involved in your childs education.

Please remember that our staff will NOT be available from 5:00 – 5:30pm on both nights.

We coordinate teachers, paras, and volunteers, with computer labs and available classrooms to create a unique schedule to accommodate the needs of all students. Since the state requires that all students must be tested in math and reading, as well as 7th grade students in science, we request that when scheduling appointments or any absence for your child, that you do so outside the established testing schedule and make every effort to schedule absences after all testing is complete.

Seventh and eighth grade students will complete both the Kansas Math and Reading Assessments on March 29, 30 and 31. Seventh grade students will complete the Kansas Science Assessment on April 12, 13, and 14. Please do not schedule absences on these dates. Fifth and sixth grade students will complete the Kansas Reading Assessment on March 8, 9, and 10, followed by the Kansas Math Assessment on April 5, 6, and 7. Spelling Bee Champion-Sarah Ward!

The PLMS annual Spelling Bee was held on Friday, January 14th in the library. Forty-four spellers from all four grades competed by spelling words from the Scripps National Spelling Bee list. The words were difficult but our students were up to the challenge. It all came down to the final rounds when 5th grader, Sarah Ward, battled word for word against 6th grader, Isaac Christman. They had to spell words such as

“unanimous”, “inoculate”, “aborigine” and “succinct” but Sarah Ward won the bee when she spelled the word “monstrosity” correctly. Sarah will go on to represent PLMS at the Jefferson County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, Feb. 1st at 7:00 p.m., right here in the PLHS Theater. Way to go, Sarah!

Library Lunch Bunch

Food in the library? Yes -- but only on Library Lunch Bunch days! Students who want to talk about what they are reading are invited to eat lunch in the library on Fridays once a month (one grade each week). Discussion ranges from what kids would take with them on a desert island to guessing which books the others are reading to just enjoying lunch with other bibliophiles. Listen to the announcements to hear when your grade is next scheduled and come join in the fun!


Site Council / Spring Sports Info Night - February 24th

On February 24th, the PLMS Site Council will meet in the office conference room. Again, attendance is open and new ideas are welcome. IMPORTANT NOTE: The Spring Sports Information night for parents/students will be held at 7:00pm immediately following the Site Council meeting.

EXPLORE Test Results

Prior to taking the ACT in high school, students take the PLAN test in 10th

grade and this year we were able to apply for the EXPLORE for FREE! It is a

great way to get a head start on the ACT and since the State of Kansas

believes strongly in the importance of ACT preparation, the State of Kansas

paid for every Kansas 8th grader to take the EXPLORE. Explore is a College and

Career Readiness Program. Every student was given information to take home to

parents in November. If you did not receive this, please let me know and I will send

another pamphlet home with your child.

EXPLORE Results and Bragging Rights- PLMS students scored 2%-3% higher than the national

norm in English, Math, Reading and Science as well as the overall composite score for all

subjects! The highest score on the EXPLORE is a 25. We are proud to say that out of our seventy-four

PLMS 8th grade students, we had four students score a 24 and three students scored a 23, near perfect!

Students will receive their individual results during Social Studies on January 18th. Please ask your

student about the EXPLORE and if you have further questions I will be happy to discuss the results with

you during Parent/Teacher Conference Feb. 2nd and 3rd.

Technology Rich Classroom – Reason to Celebrate

Congratulations to 5th and 6th grade teachers and students! The Kansas

State Department of Education visited our 5/6 classrooms in December

to check on our progress in regards to the Technology Rich Classroom

grant. They were very impressed with the progress made by our

teachers and students. In fact, the Department of Education was so

impressed that they asked our 5/6 TRC staff to present at the next state

wide training.

PLMS was the ONLY first year grant recipient to receive an invitation to

present. What an honor for our staff and students.

Carey’s 8th grade LA class working on Propaganda!

In 8th-grade LA classes, students have been hard at work creating problem-solving products. Once prototypes were finished, students then created persuasive ads for their products using differing propaganda techniques. Some student groups made radio and TV commercials with video cameras and audio recorders while others used computer programs or markers to create billboards and magazine ads. Still others are using various computer applications to research and “create” products. Will students recognize and identify the difference between “bandwagon” and” testimonial” techniques or between “name calling” and “false promise” techniques? What about “facts & stats,” “glittering generalities,” and the other propaganda techniques that’ll be on state assessments? Next week we’ll see all the finished products and hear the students’ sales pitches! Beware of propaganda!

Annual 6th Grade Snow Creek Trip

The annual trip to Snow Creek in Weston, Missouri is scheduled for Wednesday, February 16. The buses will leave PLMS at 8:20 and return at 5:00. Our PTO will contribute $6.00 per student towards the cost of the lift tickets. If you have questions please contact your child’s teacher for more specific information.

Boys Basketball Games Rescheduled

The Hiawatha game originally scheduled on January 10th has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 1st with a start time of 4:00pm. Eighth grade (A/B) will play in the high school gym and seventh grade (A/B) will play in the middle school gym. The game originally scheduled on January 20th has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 8th with a start time of 4:15pm. Seventh grade will play at the Scranton Attendance Center, 104 Burlingame Ave, in Scranton. Eighth grade will play at the Carbondale Attendance Center, 315 North Fourth Street in Carbondale.

PTO NEWS 5th and 6th grade parents: We are hosting the teacher and staff dinners during parent-teacher conferences this semester (Feb 2 and 3, 5:00 p.m.). Please email Anna Barrett at [email protected] if you can contribute one of the following, a soup or salad (Thursday's meal), a dessert, or $5 toward the meals. Your monetary donation can be sent to the office to my attention. Thank you in advance for your help - the PLMS teachers and staff are so very appreciative of the wonderful dinners our parents provide.

Early Arrival

The student handbook says that the front doors at PLMS open at 7:45. However, during cold and inclement weather, students will be able to access the building before 7:30.

Telephone or Address Changes

Please inform the office if your work or home phone number OR your address changes. In the event of an emergency, we want to reach parents as quickly as possible. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Early School Dismissal

If inclement weather strikes, Dr. Yoder, the Superintendent of Schools, will make the decision after due consideration of all factors to send students home early.

• School Reach (automated phone messaging service) will be initiated to call all designated parent-guardian phone numbers.

• Media will be notified: WDAF TV - Kansas City, TV Channel 4, WIBW - Topeka, TV Channel 13, radio 580 AM and 94.5 FM.

• Parents of students at either building may send special instructions to the office for early dismissal. We will keep those instructions on file. It is important that we reduce incoming and outgoing phone calls to those to only those that deal with getting our students safely to the proper destination.

• On bus routes, drivers determine that a student can get into their house before they leave each drop point.

• An administrator will remain at the school phone until all buses have delivered students home.

Guaranteeing every student’s safety is our priority.
