8th Graders Preview High School Offerings Feb. 7
The middle school years are quickly coming to an end for our eighth graders, and they will be moving on to new experiences and challenges at Crestwood High School. As part of the high school scheduling process, eighth graders and their parents are invited and strongly encouraged to attend the Eighth Grade High School Planning Night, Feb. 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Crestwood High School. This will be a great opportunity for eighth graders and their parents to learn about making the transition from middle school to high school, as well as the requirements for graduation and how to earn an honors diploma.
In addition, the evening will include a presentation on how to start planning now for college, careers, and life after graduation. To help welcome the eighth graders to the CHS family, Crestwood High School students will put on a showcase of all of the courses, clubs, sports, and activities that the high school has to offer, and will be available to answer any questions that parents and eighth graders may have.
New Phone Numbers for Crestwood Primary and Intermediate Schools
Feb 2 parents and community members wishing to reach Crestwood Primary and Crestwood Intermediate Schools must call the new phone numbers:
Crestwood Primary School: 330.357.8202 Crestwood Intermediate Schools: 330.357.8203
The previous phone numbers for the buildings will no longer work. Phone numbers for the buildings were changed to ensure that all residents within the district could reach the buildings without having to dial a long distance exchange. The new phone system for the elementary school campus also provides monthly cost savings of around $375 compared to the previous system.

Defining and Redefining Excellence in Ohio’s Schools – PART 1
What does it truly mean to be an excellent school district in Ohio? I answered this question at a recent board meeting and feel compelled to share it with the community. Some critics of local schools believe the standards have been lowered and being excellent isn’t what it used to be. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
To achieve an Excellent rating by the Ohio Department of Education, a school district must meet at least one of the following criteria:
• Meet at least 25 of the state’s 26 standards for achievement in academics, attendance and graduation rate • Earn a rating of “effective” and have “plus” value-‐added scores for two consecutive years • Have a performance index of 100 or higher
Crestwood earned its Excellent rating by meeting all 26 standards with proficiency and exceeding state averages in every category by 3-‐to-‐15 percent. In fact, Crestwood was one of only two school districts in Portage County to meet all 26 state indicators.
Value added measures progress in reading and math for grades 4-‐8 using the following system:
• = MET standard for one year of growth + = EXCEEDED one year of growth -‐ = DID NOT MEET one year of growth
Additionally, Crestwood achieved a Performance Index of 100.2 by having a large percentage of students perform at proficient or above levels. A closer look into the numbers show that while 36.3 percent of students tested at the proficient level, nearly half (49.4 percent) of students performed at the accelerated or advanced levels. Having nearly 50 percent of our students performing at such a high level is a testament to the dedication of our students, staff and parents. We should all be very proud of our students who have performed so well.
In next month’s issue, I will discuss how our Advanced Placement (AP) courses separate Crestwood from surrounding districts and play an important role in preparing our students for success in the 21st century.

Crestwood Students & Staff Serve the Community
In a time when there is no shortage of needs to meet in society, Crestwood students and staff took on a variety of projects to serve the community the past couple of months, many led by this year’s Junior-Senior Seminar class members. The Seminar class raised over $3,000 and collected or purchased just as many items to donate. High school students along with help from other grade levels were able to accomplish the following:
• Collected over 300 canned items and enough money to purchase over 500 pounds of food for the 4C’s of Mantua.
• Overhauled the entrance to the Portage Headwaters Trailhead.
• Held a pet care education day at Crestwood Primary School, volunteered time, raised funds, and helped animals find homes for the Portage Animal Protection League.
• Rallied over 25 students and adults for a clean-up and work day to help restore the Mantua Granary.
• With the help of children at Crestwood Primary School, collected over 2,500 books to donate to
Crestwood Continues with the Community Health Walks at Intermediate School
This is your opportunity to get moving even on those cold and snowy days. The Crestwood School District is again offering free to the community the opportunity to stay healthy on those cold mornings by walking at the Crestwood Intermediate School. The community is invited to walk a marked course within the building every Wednesday and Friday morning between 7 and 8 a.m. starting Friday, January 20, and continuing through Friday, March 30. Advanced Rehabilitation & Health Specialists will be available on Friday mornings to educate the community walkers on a variety of topics including: Blood pressure, resting heart rate, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), target heart rate, and proper stretching. The Crestwood School District and Advanced Rehabilitation & Health Specialists are working together to promote physical activity, have fun, and make new friends! Enter through the truck delivery driveway off Pioneer Trail, park near the tennis courts, and enter through the back door of the building to your right. The gym will be through the hallway. Call or email Juli Robine 330-274-2747 or [email protected] with any questions, or visit our website at www.arhs.us
patients at Robinson Memorial Hospital. Primary students who brought in the most books, won a pizza party.
• Raised awareness for the needs and services of Townhall II.• Raised funds and bought Christmas gifts for children at Akron Children’s Hospital.• Raised funds and bought Christmas gifts to donate to Rainbow Babies Hospital.• Donated candy for Halloween activities and raised enough funds for every resident at
Maplewood Care Center to receive a Christmas gift.• Raised funds to donate to Rose’s Animal Rescue.• Held a fun activity day for the children at Hattie Larlham’s Autism Pre-School.• Raised funds and motivated students to help beautify the high school.
The Middle School Leadership group sponsored a food drive for the 4 Cs and a book drive for Safer Futures in December. Students were able to donate more than 1200 items for the food drive and more than 700 books. The Primary, Intermediate and Middle schools all participated in a giving tree program for the holidays and were able to help numerous families throughout the community. The Middle School helped 10 families, 28 children; and the Intermediate and Primary Schools contributed over 150 gifts that went to about 30 families. One student, Gavin Pokorny’s, Great Aunt Mrs. Edge brought many gifts to the Primary School over the holiday, and following a tradition of her late father put
candy into a stocking hat followed by a small stuffed animal tied with a balloon. Mrs. Edge added these additional gifts to the Giving Tree. Also, Mrs Godley and the “Deck” provided dinner and gifts to many of these families on Dec. 11, 2011. Mantua Center Christian Church provided bags of gifts for a number of Crestwood families also. The employees of the administrative offices also took up a collection for the 4Cs before Christmas. This is the third year that the staff held the food collection.

Connecting to Antarctica
As winter is in full gear and the snow falls in Mantua, Ohio, first-grade teacher Natalie Harr is enjoying summertime in Palmer Station, Antarctica. Miss Harr arrived in Antarctica early this year after a journey including two days of air travel to the tip of South America, and six days at sea, complete with 22 foot waves from the deck of an icebreaker ship. Despite the rigors of travel, Miss Harr has been connecting with our students through her web-site and blog. Links to this are on the district web-site and are worth looking at to see the amazing photographs from her new “backyard.” We may be used to seeing deer and changing seasons, but glaciers, penguins, and dolphins are features of her new landscape. Teachers throughout the world are connecting to this experience, and some of our own Crestwood teachers are taking advantage of Natalie’s quest. Students in the Primary school are reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins while anticipating the viewing of the movie. Penguin facts are announced every morning and many classes are following the daily blog. Community member Roxanne Sorrick has played a major role with primary students through video-taping experiences and posting items to Natalie’s web-site. Projects include a bulletin board with healthy habits, an animoto video featuring first graders and their thoughts about what Miss Harr is doing in Antarctica, and also a video about penguins. Board member Matt Sorrick also continues his connection with our classrooms through a field experience for his
Early Childhood Science Methods class from Hiram College. These students are creating science kits with lesson plans, materials, and related books, as well as planning for some small group teaching experiences. Intermediate students are following Miss Harr’s journey by earning snowshoes for reading. Students must read for hours to earn a snowshoe, and these are posted along the cafeteria walls. At the middle school, Mrs. Duesing, Ms. Stine, Mrs. Manfrass, and Mrs. Corr have worked to generate awareness among students and faculty by creating a bulletin board in the main hallway highlighting Miss Harr’s trip and research. A web folder was built filled with ideas for teachers to incorporate into their classes including writing prompts and class activities. In reading classes, Mrs. Duesing and Mrs. Corr have been using articles related to polar regions to keep the interest going. Teachers throughout the building have incorporated Miss Harr’s
Antarctica adventure into their lessons. Members of the community can follow Miss Harr’s research through her blog at www.crestwoodexplorestheworld.org.

8th Grade: Autumn Battiest, Romeo Nuti, Kaleigh Miller,Tyler Labas, Danielle Martinez, Micheal Hosey
Jan. 5 Crestwood Middle School held its local Spelling Bee. The contestants earned their positions by scoring the highest in the school on a written test. After a nail biting competition with 12 rounds, the competitors spelled down to four school champions. These four will represent CMS at the District Bee at Maplewood Career Center on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. Congratulations and GOOD LUCK to our four qualifying champs: eighth graders are Sam Oliphant and Micheal Hosey and seventh graders are Ben Pearce and Olivia Brady.
SPELLING BEE 2012
Recently, the students in Mrs. Thomas’ science class did some “magic” while investigating the processes of diffusion and osmosis. In order to explore how molecules of different sizes can move (or not move) through a semi-permeable membrane, the class set up a simple experiment involving starch, water, and iodine. The iodine turns purple when it comes in contact with the starch and acts as an indicator. When the students put a starch solution in a baggie and set the baggie in a beaker of iodine and water, it was easy to see which molecules moved across the membrane! Just like magic, the students could see the color change as the iodine slipped across the membrane and turned the starch solution purple! The kids really enjoyed getting to use their inquiry skills and work with the lab equipment to investigate a natural process.

One Book ... One School
Matter Matters!
The fourth graders at Crestwood Intermediate School are currently learning about Matter in their Science classes. As an introductory lesson, Mrs. Franks’ students became particles as they demonstrated how solid, liquid, and gas particles move. Pictured are the students in Mrs. Franks’ homeroom demonstrating how liquid particles are close together but can move and slide around each other. The boys and girls also stood tightly packed together just wiggling to represent solid particles, and were permitted to carefully move quickly around the entire room to represent gas particles. Additional activities during this unit will include measuring mass with pan balances and gram cubes, measuring the volume of oddly shaped matter using water in beakers, and creating a yummy treat while demonstrating chemical and physical changes.
“MyPlate” replaces “My Pyramid” by Jennifer Bujak-Hirsch, School Nutrition Specialist
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans are jointly issued and updated every five years by the United States Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services. They provide advice for Americans about consuming fewer calories, making informed food choices, and being physically active to attain and maintain a healthy weight, reduce risk of chronic disease, and promote overall health. In June 2011, MyPlate replaced MyPyramid. MyPlate is designed to remind Americans to eat healthfully. MyPlate illustrates the five food groups that are the building blocks for a healthy diet, using a familiar image—a place setting for a meal. Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate or in your cup or bowl.1. Fruits~Focus on Fruits~ Make half your plate
fruits and vegetables. Any fruit or 100% fruit juice counts as part of the Fruit Group. Fruits may be fresh, canned, frozen, or dried, and may be whole, cut-up, or pureed.
2. Vegetables~ Vary your veggies~Any vegetable or 100% vegetable juice counts as a member of the Vegetable Group. Vegetables may be raw or cooked; fresh, frozen, canned, or dried/dehydrated; and may be whole, cut-up, or mashed.
3. Grains~ Make at least half your grains whole~ Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grain products. Grains are divided into 2 subgroups, whole grains and refined Grains. Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel ― the bran, germ, and endosperm. Some examples of whole grain include whole-wheat flour, bulgur, oatmeal, whole cornmeal and brown rice. Refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ. Some examples of refined grain products are white flour, white bread and white rice.
4. Protein Foods~Go lean with protein~All foods made from meat, poultry, seafood, beans, eggs, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds are considered part of the protein foods group. Select a variety of protein foods to improve nutrient intake and health benefits.
5. Dairy~Go fat-free or low-fat!~All fluid milk products and foods made from milk are considered part of this food group. Foods made from milk that retain their calcium content are part of the group. Foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter, are not.
For more information, healthy recipes and nutrition tips visit www.ChooseMyPlate.gov.
Mrs. Chesla’s class is excited to learn about Antarctica! As part of the Crestwood - Antarctica connection, many school wide activities are taking place. Students from Mrs. Chesla’s class are shown here holding up examples of some of these activities. Among them are puppets of native Antarctica animals and a book about penguins. The puppets were obtained as part of the Antarctica grant. Each grade level received a tub containing these puppets and various other items and activities pertaining to Antarctica. The books about penguins were purchased by Mrs. Trivelli. Each student at Crestwood Primary will receive one of these books. If you haven’t already heard, penguins have become very popular at our school! We have even undertaken a special project entitled “One Book, One School”. This involves getting the whole school to read the same book. And of course we chose a book about Penguins! We are all reading Mr. Popper’s Penguins! The second graders also read a penguin fact each day to the entire school. You can get involved at home as well by keeping updated through Miss Harr’s blog!

Students in kindergarten music classes recently sang the song, “That’s A Family” (Anne Ellsworth) and learned to sign words that are associated with families. Students in Mrs. Reese’s class are demonstrating the sign for family.
To end the year 2011, Mrs. Lowe’s class practiced following steps to build gingerbread houses! The houses looked beautiful and tasted pretty yummy, too!
Mrs. Crowe’s class is working hard to improve reading fluency. They did a great job performing for parents at the holiday program.
