them in with a bedtime story. How I manage to keep a balance

between professional and personal life: I am blessed with a great supporting husband and sister. As for the never ending fashion weeks I just have to call in the grandparents from Islamabad to help with the kids.

Name: Sara ShahidClaim to fame: Fashion Designer. I

have been running my own label Sublime for the last nine years.

Bundles of joy: I have one daughter Nayum and one son Shayaan. My daughter will be 10 in August and my son five in June this year Insha Allah!

Activities we enjoy: There are lots of activities we are involved in; some are fun and some are compulsory! I can let go of myself and enjoy during the holidays. We break away from the routine, but school days unfortunately, for a mother revolve around setting schedules and sticking to them which all kids find boring. But between my work and home we manage to have fun whenever and wherever possible. Some of the funniest and most special moments are the ones which happen at the oddest times and children say the most beautiful things that bring a smile to my face no matter how tired I may be!

How much time do I manage to give my kids daily: I try and schedule my work around the kids’ timings, picking them up from school, helping with home work and settling them down in the evening. These are times that I try always to put work on hold. On certain days when I’m at the studio longer, I take them with me; they find things to do around Sublime while I

do my work. They create distractions for me but that’s just how it is and I would not have it any other way!

How I manage to keep a balance between professional and personal life: I feel that we as women have to handle home, family and business together. It does take a lot of patience and at times we have to make sacrifices. Women are great at multitasking. Some days it gets overwhelming and on other days it seems all worth it. My kids have grown up with Sublime and feel very much a part of it. They follow what I’m doing and feel as much pride as I do on every small achievement. The balancing act is a tough job but truly worth it and I salute all women who do this and do it so gracefully!

Name: Juggun KazimClaim to fame: First Garnier brand

ambassador in Pakistan. Actor and morning show host on Express News TV.

Bundle of joy: I have a five year old son Hamza Ahmed.

Activities we enjoy: Playing cricket, swimming, reading and watching movies and baking.

How much time do I manage to give my son daily: I get done from my morning show at 11:30 am so most days I spend the whole day with Hamza after I pick him from school. But a minimum of 4 - 6 hours a day at any cost. Thank God for my decision to host a morning show.

How I manage to keep a balance between professional and personal life: My work ends before my son gets done from school. So I have plenty of time for him and my home. I meet up with

friends after 7:30 pm, that’s when Hamza goes to bed. I have a home gym so I work out at home, swim at my cousin Sanam’s house and do Pilates at my friend Samiah Raazee’s house. I work it all out before Hamza gets done from school. Balance is easy... life can sometimes just generally be tough.

Name: Maria ButtClaim to fame: CEO/ head designer,

MARIA B. Designs Pvt LtdBundle of joy: I have one daughter.

She’s six and a half years old.Activities we enjoy: We are extremely

close spiritually and emotionally as I’m a single mom. We have only each other to depend on. We love driving and singing together, going out for cupcakes, reading, watching movies, dressing up, traveling and doing makeup.

How much time do I manage to give my child daily: I’m a very hands-on mom, so I take time out every day, but when I see that Fatu needs more attention, I drop everything and am by her side even more often.

How I manage to keep a balance between professional and personal life: It’s very tough and challenging most of the time. I’m constantly torn between work and my daughter. But now that she’s older, I have lots of time for work as well. The traveling is the tough part. Leaving her and going away is difficult. God has blessed me with everything I could dream of. So I’m not the one to complain.

Page 45: 8th May 2011 - Lounge Weekly - Pakistan Today

Bundle of joy: I have just one kid. He’s five and a half years old.

Activities we enjoy: Watching Disney movies and cooking. I have never been separated even for two hours spent without my son. Mostly he’s with me when I’m touring.

How I manage to keep a balance between professional and personal life: Life is all about keeping a balance. I have my priorities fixed in my life and my son comes on the top along with my mother the two people I spend most of my time with.

Name: Col Shahina Jamil KhanClaim to fame: Politician,

philanthropist, run the largest private charitable hospital of Pakistan (named after her) and a retired top-notch military dentist.

Bundles of joy: I have three children: a son aged 28 and two daughters 27 and 18.

Activities we enjoy: From shopping to decorating our home and discussing expectations and responsibilities to future goals, I make sure my kids enjoy everything with me.

How much time do I manage to give my kids daily: No matter how busy everyone in the family is, at the end of the day, we all sit at the dinner table and discuss the entire day’s activities. I have always encouraged my kids to discuss every issue with me. It keeps the family together. So I always compensate for the time I have spent at work.

How I manage to keep a balance between professional and personal life: I think learning time management has

helped a lot. Another important thing that I have learnt over the years is when to say ‘no’. I always set a goal, assign a date for it and put in all my efforts to make it happen. Sticking to one’s values is important. It helps one achieve an automatic balance between family life and work. No matter what part of the world I’m in, I have made it a rule to celebrate my kids’ birthdays with them.

Name: Maheen Kardar AliClaim to fame: Design director,

KarmaBundles of joy: Two kids, a daughter

and a son. Arianna Ali is five and a half, and Rayaan Ali is 16 months old.

Activities we enjoy: In the Ali household, we love to paint, draw, swim, dance, bake, travel, read, garden, watch movies and play! These days, Arianna is going through a Betty Crocker phase and loves baking, which is like Greek to me, so we are both learning with every new cake and cupcake that she comes up with. Rayaan just wants to play football, and that has caused many casualties around the drawing room!

How much time do I manage to give my kids daily: I make sure that I manage to spend good quality time with both my kids during the week and our weekends are mostly devoted to them. I wake up Arianna for school, help her get dressed and have breakfast with her before Saad drops her off to school. Then Rayaan and I cuddle for another hour and get some time together in which we get dressed and leave for work. He spends the first half of the day with me at the studio or the factory and we pick Arianna up from school together. I go back to work

after lunch and make it a point to be back before bath and dinner time in the evening. I put them to bed every night after our bedtime story session.

How I manage to keep a balance between professional and personal life: Attaining and keeping that balance is the hardest thing I have ever done. I have the ability to multitask and have extremely supportive grand parents.

There are loads of bulletin boards around the house and work place; it is a never-ending planning, the ability to switch off completely when I leave work, a notebook and an army of post-its, quick getaways with just the four of us, a hard core support group, an obsession with doing it right and my way, a husband who totally shares my each sentiment, a good sense of humour and God’s constant grace! Saad and I are very fussy hands-on parents and have always included our children in every aspect of our lives, hence they are extremely adaptable and upbeat super troopers.

Name: Nadia HussainClaim to fame: Model and actressBundles of joy: I have two kids:

Shadal and Shanzay of ages six and four.Activities we enjoy: Any kind of

activity like sports, reading, going out etc.How much time do I manage to give

my kids daily: It’s not fixed but I get them ready for school and at noon I pick them up as well. I always manage to have lunch with my kids. At night Iput them to bed and read them stories.

How I manage to keep a balance between professional and personal life: Very strict time management.

‘Nayna’ says it all

Saman Arif of Nayna is known for creating quixotic collections which bring out her talent as a designer. In a short span she has acquired a place for herself in the industry. ‘I was madly obsessed with clothes being the only girl of the family and naturally getting all the pampering; the clothes automatically became essential for me,’ she reminisces.

One quality of Saman Arif that strikes you is her chirpy nature, her vivid memory that reflects in total recall of the names of her clients and her uncanny ability to connect with everyone. Her interest in fashion goes beyond her PIFD days and took shape when she launched ‘Nayna’. ‘This business is all about PR, social networking and a mélange of family and friends,’ she reveals. ‘Initially I did my cousin’s wedding that spread the word and slowly things started moving in the right direction. I was inundated with orders,’ Saman enthuses. Attention to detail, fabric perfection and elaborate embroideries are the trademarks of the ingenuity of her brand. She has diversified and has opened up a ready-to-wear outlet on the ground floor of her studio in Defence. ‘We are doing casuals and semi formals, A-line shirts, slightly shorter shirts, churidaars and tights which we are going to sell separately.’ Saman finds the concept of a three piece suit quite ridiculous; she aims to encourage her clients by coordinating the colours for them in such a way that they end up designing for themselves. She is very enthusiastic about the new trend of online shopping and declares that those will be the only designers in the country who are offering active e-commerce in collaboration with a European country. ‘This would be just like how one shops on impulse on rotational basis; purchasing the outfits on a credit card which will give us a broader base for work and clientele,’ she explains. Saman along withher husband is working on the e-commerce engine which will act as aninternational website. The designer excels in eastern wear that includes her specialty - bridals and formals. She has kept in sync with the changing trends and themes. Influenced by Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage her collection is crafted withimpeccable design and colour schemes. She takes pride in the fact that her pieces are worn and liked by women of all ages. The recent example is the Mauritius Fashion Week and the fashion weeks that were held in Lahore and Karachi last year. ‘My design philosophy is that whatever I produce for the ramp should be wearable and practical.’

It’s not just the fats that this diet attacks but studies have also shown that it helps curb depression

Health

Curbing carb cravings

Summers are here and it’s time to wear floral prints and all those opulent cuts that one dreads to try on, in winters. But what about those extra pounds that you have been cleverly hiding? It’s time to say goodbye to the extra

flab of fat. Say ‘NO’ to the biggest culprit in weight gain - carbohydrates. Staying away from carbohydrates will now no longer be impossible, as I give you a brilliant theory: say no to caffeine and ultimately you will lose craving for carb-rich food items.

The first thing that pops into my mind when I wake up in the morning and look into the mirror is to wish to see that I have lost an amazing amount of weight. But the next thought is dreaming of exotic food. And then you break your ‘no calorie’ rule. Here the award of the real culprit goes to none other than our very own companion ‘Lady Caffeine’. Caffeine triggers cravings in the innocent mind and fills it with all those pictures of pastries with frosted toppings, muffins coming fresh out of the oven and hot chocolate bubbling out of lava cakes.

Many people I have come across have misconceptions that caffeine helps in weight loss; the reality is, however, quite the opposite. Consumption of caffeinated beverages or any other form of it ultimately stimulates increased appetite for sweets and fatty foods. Caffeine results in elevated blood sugar and

stress hormones that jeopardize people’s efforts to stick to their diet regime. So if you don’t want your brain to be a menu card of a bakery it’s about time to switch to decaf beverages; the taste will be the same but the side effects will be zilch.

Once you have countered your cravings it will be easy for you to maintain a low carb regime. In such a diet try to avoid complex carbs as found mostly in potatoes, flour and rice etc. I suggest increased intake of protein and take basic carbs just from vegetables. Once your body gets used to this diet eventually it wont be able to find any extra carb to burn for energy and will resort in burning fats already present in your body.

Addition of taking of eight glasses of water daily will not only help hydrating your body but also will prevent you from constipation. It’s not just the fats that this diet attacks but studies have shown that such a diet helps to curb depression. Also as a complimentary gift, this diet helps reviving your skin and hair, as you will be taking basic vitamins and minerals from vegetables.

So if even caffeine gives you a mood elevation, or gives you extra hours to stay up don’t be tempted. Coffee might smell rich and heavenly, but all that glitters is not gold. And in this case all that caffeine might end being a health hazard.
