It may have been a bit uncomfortable

in the Performance Space, but

students who participated in the

Mission Australia Winter Sleepout on

25th August are very aware that there

are a number of people, their age,

sleeping rough every night. Forty one

students stayed overnight, raising

funds for this great charity. The event

included a game of dodge ball in the

afternoon, handball, giant connect 4,

movie watching, popcorn eating and

an extremely late night. Both students

and staff had a fantastic time and

once again this type of event shows

the wonderful interaction that

students and staff have at NHHS.

Thank you to everyone who

sponsored the students to raise funds

for Mission Australia.

Students would also like to say a

big thank you to Miss Sarah Magill

for organising the event. To staff

members Mr Matt Rumsey, Mrs Pat

Nichols, Ms Lauren Trevethan and

Mrs Chris Sunley for organising

dinner and snacks and for attending

the night to make it possible.

The SRC looks forward to a bigger

and better event next year.

Principal’s Report Dear Parents and Community

This week is School Administrative Support Staff (SASS) Recognition Week. Our SASS staff are

integral to the success of Nambucca Heads High School. Our SASS staff are spread throughout

the school in the following positions: School Administrative Manager, School Administrative

Officers, School Learning Support Officers, Aboriginal Education Officers and our General

Assistant. On behalf of the whole NHHS school community I would like to acknowledge and

recognise the work of our SASS staff. Thanks to: Corinne Potter, Vanessa Barbour, Jade Brine,

Gina Crooks, Jenny Dayman, David Dedman, Mark Duckett, Susan Hamilton, Felicia Jarrett,

Edrica Jarrett, Peter Lewis, Gayle McNamara, Lyne Neal, Mark Neal, Dianne Ryan, Barry

Simmons, Ken Smith and Annette Welsh.

At Tuesday's assembly I spoke to the student body about our school mantra – what you put into your education is what you

will get out of it. If you are a student who comes to school each day willing to learn, be involved and prepared to work to the

best of your ability then your educational outcomes will be pleasing. I also spoke to students about the concept of respect

and how it is integral for educational success to occur. Respect for yourself, respect for your classmates and respect for al l

staff. Please ask your child about their educational goals for the rest of 2017 and beyond.

Good luck to all Year 11 students who will be completing their Preliminary HSC examinations in Week 10 before they

become our HSC cohort of 2018.

In Week 10 we also bid farewell to our 2017 HSC cohort. We will have a breakfast for Year 12 students and parents on

Wednesday 20th September followed by the farewell assembly for our 2017 HSC class. The HSC begins for all students

with English Paper 1 on Monday 16th October.

As always, please contact me at the school with any queries as to your child’s education.

Highlight of the fortnight:

At Tuesday’s assembly, we had nine Year 11 students nominate themselves for the positions of Captain, Vice-Captain and

Prefect for 2018. All students are to be congratulated for putting themselves forward to be leaders of our school and for

having the courage to stand in front of the school community and make a speech. Well done to Caroline Higgins, Zara

Hamilton, Kyiesha Siemsen, Molly Langley, Georgia Hoffman, Sam Russo, Jacob Fidirikkos, Kian Coggan and Beau

Langford. NHHS will once again have excellent student leaders in 2018.

Year 11 Biology students visited Goldies Park, Bowraville to

undertake fieldwork for The Local Ecosystem topic which they are

currently studying. While there, students conducted a water bug

survey, tested water ph, turbidity, temperature, salinity and whether

there were any phosphates or nitrates present. Plant distribution

was also measured using a point transfer and the abundance of

native and introduced plant species was estimated using the

quadrant method of sampling (ask your child about what that is).

Students will be working solidly in class to write their report about

the fieldtrip. They will be discussing their findings from the tests

conducted and making a conclusion about the water quality at

Goldies Park. Although the water level in the creek is low at the

moment there was enough for students to carry out their testing.

Thank you to Ms Louise Lockyer and Mr Mark Neal for taking the

students.

Sport Wrap-Up

U/15’s Basketball:

Congratulations to Isaac Hodnett-

Daly on his performances at the

recent North Coast Athletics

carnival. His results awarded him

U’16 Champion for 2017. He is

currently competing at the CHS

carnival in Sydney.

Congratulations to all the students who travelled to Port Macquarie

on Thursday 31st August to compete in the U/15’s Basketball

competition. The competition was of a very high standard and even

though our students weren’t the eventual winners they were not

disgraced and fought hard in each of the games. Thank you to Mr

Mat Rumsey for his training before the competition. Training

continues at lunch time and after school on Tuesdays. Everyone is

welcome to come along for a run. Also thank you to Mr Rod Cross

for taking the teams and driving the bus.

U/14’s Netball: Congratulations to Freya Locke, Georgia

Heffernan, Lucy Green, Jade Crawley, Brianna Daniels, Grace

Holladay, Sumah Robins, Isabella Ronan, Mia Kelsey and Jayda Rixon

on their recent netball games in the State Knockout. The girls had a

great day in beautiful sunshine and a win over Kempsey High. Thank

you to Miss Magill and parents who supported the girls on the day.

Boys Futsal 14’s & 16’s: Last Friday two teams

travelled to Port Macquarie for a Futsal gala day. The U/14’s

and U/16’s both played three games each during the day. The

improvement in the boys from the first to the last game was

obvious. In the first game both teams came up against Melville

High School who had experienced Futsal players in their teams

and were just too strong for us. In the next two games we

played Port Macquarie and Forster teams and both teams

competed well. All of the boys tried their hardest and showed

good sportsmanship at all times. Thank you to Mr Cross, Mr

McKinney and Emma Knights for transporting the boys on the

day.

Year 11 SLR

On Monday 4th September students from Year 11 SLR spent time with Stage 2

students from Frank Partridge

VC Primary School teaching

them how to play Offside

Touch. Students completing

this course have a coaching

unit as an assessment task.

They began by playing “Last

man standing” as a warm up

then passing games. The

younger students learnt to dive

onto the crash mats then

catching a football (rugby

league) while diving. They then

went onto use all these new

MONEY RAISED WILL GO TOWARDS THE YEAR 12 FORMAL

On Wednesday 6th September students

were very excited to have a visit from Zohab

Zee Khan. Zohab is an educator, spoken

word poet, motivational speaker, didgeridoo

player, musician and hip-hop artist. Since

2006, Zohab has been building a formidable

career in spoken word poetry, culminating

in taking out the title of the Australian

Poetry Slam Champion in 2014. In 2014 he

was also a finalist in the International Poetry

Slam in Madrid. His workshops are fun and

entertaining, delivering poetry in a

completely different manner than the

students have seen before. Students are

encouraged to write their own lines and be

involved in the presentation. This workshop

was enjoyed by everyone in the packed

performance space.

The final of the Handball competition for staff

was held on Tuesday 5th September. There was

great anticipation. The competitors - Mr Mat

Rumsey and Mr Peter Barron - battled their way

through several rounds to what was an epic final.

After much toing and froing, ducking and diving

it came to match point…. but of course there can

be only one winner. Mr Rumsey showed just a

little more skill than Mr Barron to take the match.

The quadrangle was packed with students (Mr

Rumsey with his own cheer squad) and it was

great fun.
