Spotlight on our PartnersVictor Goodman has been a business owner in the Takoma Park community for over 3 years. His business has served thousands of people and still going strong. He is very grateful for the community support that has lead to his successful career. He has chosen to give back to the community through helping the Recreation Department. “I realize that my kids and grandkids are very fortunate and I am fortunate to be able to give back.” Victor has chosen the Recreation De-partment because of all the kids we service and he acknowledges they are our future. Victor is the owner of G&G Pawnbrokers, Inc on University Boulevard in Takoma Park. The Recreation Depart-ment would like to thank Victor for his generous contribution and assistance to the Recreation Department Teen Program.

Welcome To Our New Assistant Director Debby Huffman joined the Takoma Park Recreation Department’s team in early June. She has 13 years of pro-gressive experience in the recreation field working for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Com-mission, Prince George’s County. In addition to her years of service, she has both her undergraduate and Master’s Degrees in Parks and Recreation Administration. She has been an active member of the state and national parks and recreation as-sociations since the beginning of her career. She is excited about the opportunity to work with dedicated department staff and a community and City Council that has a strong commitment to recreation. Debby has a passion for the recreation field and enjoys providing services and programs for all ages. “I am excited to continue to offer a variety of programs to the wonderful people of Takoma Park and I enjoy hearing suggestions from the citizens.”

Takoma Fun Facts: What does the Brazilian City have in common with Belle Ziegler, first recreation director of Takoma Park?

The park at Albany and New York Avenues used to be named for Jequie and is now named for Belle Ziegler, but there is more to the story. In 1965 Takoma Park organized a Brazilian festival in honor of Jequie, its Sister City. Over the next decade both Takoma and Jequie hosted a series of student exchanges. The 1965 festival site in North Takoma became Jequie Park. The recent name change to Ziegler Park recognizes Belle’s volunteer efforts including her years spearheading the Sister Cities project. -- This “fun fact” was provided by Historic Takoma

Takoma Fun Facts: What is the oldest landmark in Takoma Park?

It is a weather-beaten granite boulder that dates back to the days of George Washington and sits unobtrusively on Maple Avenue, north of Carroll Avenue. Laid in place by surveyor Andrew Ellicott in 179, it is one of 40 stones marking the 10-square mile boundary of the District of Columbia. In 191 the Daughters of the America Revolution added a protective wrought-iron fence around each boundary stone. Takoma Park’s fence was replaced after a car damaged it. There are few clues at the site as to the exact border between Maryland and DC, but using the stone as a point of reference to link the two sections of Eastern Avenue to the west and east, you can imagine the diagonal line. -- This “fun fact” was provided by Historic Takoma
