LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Over the last few months I have been forced to deal with some very public accusations made against me as your Mayor. I was forced to sit by quietly as some people tarnished my reputation and questioned my integrity. I felt it was important to allow all of the facts to come out and was confident that I would be treated with respect and fairness. Unfortunately, that did not occur and the time has come for me to speak directly to the you, the people of Superior. I speak these words not as your Mayor, but as a person who has been a part of this community for my entire life. My words are not directed to my constituents, they are directed to my neighbors. By now, most of you have learned that I was charged by the Attorney General for misusing a credit card issued

by the Town of Superior. I want to remind you that this is an unproven accusation. Like any other person, I am presumed innocent. We are all certainly aware of people who have been indicted only to be found innocent by a jury that is presented with all of the facts. I will admit that I have made my share of mistakes, like everyone else in this town. From day one, I have accepted responsibility for those mistakes. I may have shown poor judgment but I did not commit a crime. I believe the people of Superior are smart enough to know the difference. As you know, I am also facing a recall election that will cost the Town of Superior resources that we do not have. Instead of allowing the justice system to make

Mayor Valenzuela speaks to residents, familya determination on this single charge, some of my political opponents have rushed to try and force me out of office. I do not believe that is warranted. I have been a dedicated and effective Mayor who has been willing to stand up to the special interests that want to take advantage of our community. I realize that some may not have agreed with my positions but my motives have never been questioned. The bottom line is that I care deeply about the people of Superior and I ask you to allow me to finish the job that I started when you first elected me. I want to assure you that I will defend myself against the accusation that has been filed against me and I am confident that I will prevail. If, however, I am convicted of a felony, state law prohibits me from serving as Mayor and I would be required to resign. Thus, there is a mechanism for removing me from office if the accusation against me is ever proven beyond a reasonable doubt. That has not been done at this point and there is simply no need for a recall election. I would ask that you vote to keep me as your Mayor and I promise to serve you well and learn from my mistakes. In closing, I want to thank those of you who have expressed your support and offered your prayers for me and my family. This has been a challenging time for us and your compassion has been a blessing. Regardless of election results, I am very proud to be a part of this community and grateful for the opportunity to serve you. Sincerely,/s/ Jayme Valenzuela

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

There are a large number of voters in Superior who, generally speaking, are neither personally involved, nor interested in being involved in the everyday political scene around Superior. However, these same citizens are concerned about Town leadership and are always faithful to vote. If this sounds familiar, then you are one of the silent majority who will determine who will serve as Mayor and Council Members in the upcoming Primary Election. Because you are one of the silent majority, this letter is intended especially for you. The Town of Superior may well be on the verge of experiencing a “fresh new movement”. As voters, YOU started something special when you elected Mila Besich-Lira, Michael Alonzo and Steven Estatico to the Town Council. Since that time the Town has experienced rumblings in the leadership that hopefully signify impending change. At a recent Council meeting, only four members were present; Vice Mayor, Olga

Lopez, and the three newest Council Members named above. They took a significant step forward when they hired then Superior Fire Chief, Todd Pryor as the new Town Manager. The skill set gained by Pryor as Fire Chief translates very well into the skill set needed for the Town Manager position. Additionally, Pryor has the desire and fortitude to make the necessary personal adjustments needed to execute the special requirements of this assignment. He is the right man for the job during this important time in the Town’s evolution. The electorate is being called upon in the upcoming Aug. 30, 2016 Primary Election to seat a Mayor and three Council Members. You, the people, have a number of very important decisions to make in this election cycle because “who” you elect will decide whether positive change will come to Town leadership or whether the Town will remain mired in activities unbecoming the leadership of Superior. Besich-Lira is running for Mayor in

the Mayoral recall election. She has the competence, motivation and expertise to be one of Superior’s finest Mayors. If elected, she WILL bring about positive change! More importantly, Besich-Lira is unwavering in her moral and ethical character. She has a proven track record of leadership and is committed to guiding Superior into a bright future. If you want to see positive change for the Town of Superior, a vote for Besich-Lira is a vital step in the right direction. There are two seated council members and three new contenders running for three seats on the Town Council. Olga Lopez and John Tameron are vying to retain their seats. Vanessa Navarette, Bill Vogler and I (Bruce Armitage), are all new candidates running for Town Council. Should Besich-Lira be successful in her bid to be Mayor, she will need Council Members who will support her efforts to revitalize the Town by bringing innovative ideas, fresh enthusiasm and independent thinking to the dais. Now is the time for

you, the electorate, to seat candidates to the Town Council who are forward thinking and creative in their approach to the Town’s future. Our Town needs Council Members that are not looking to advance their own personal agendas but whose primary objective is to do “what’s best for the Town of Superior.” It is important that the people of Superior stand up and have their voices heard in the upcoming election. Exercise your right to vote and elect those candidates that you believe will bring the kind of change that Superior deserves. Superior is at a critical point in its history. The silent majority will have a powerful voice in determining whether the Town advances into the above mentioned “fresh new movement” or if we continue down our current path with a style of leadership that appears to have little or no direction and seems to be driven by circumstance rather than by a clear and organized plan. /s/ Bruce E ArmitageSuperior, Arizona

I am writing to let folks living in Superior and do not get to town hall or our Town Council meeting just what has been happening over the last seven months. It is not necessary to go into detail about all that has transpired within our town government but needless to say there has been a shakeup that has been long overdue. We still have some house cleaning to do and hopefully the August 30 vote will bring us some new faces and ideas. The fact that our mayor had used the town credit card for other than town expenses was disclosed to the council and public at the December 2015 council meeting. Shortly thereafter the towns “temporary” town manager quit her position and the town council asked that the improper use of funds by the mayor

be investigated by authorities. The only question regarding the credit cards use is whether it was accidental or intentional. The mayor admitted the improper use of the card at the town council meeting but said it had only happened twice which we later found out was false. The mayor has now been indicted by the Arizona State Attorney General. The amazing thing about the events of the last few months is how much change has taken place within our town. The employees at town hall have a new sense of worth and it is a pleasure doing business with them. It seems the cloud of oppression has been lifted from our community and we are looking forward with a much more positive attitude. Our new town manager has been able to make things happen that we were told could

not be done by our mayor and old town manager. The positive changes we are seeing is because the new town manager was not one picked by the mayor. The transfer station which the mayor and old town manager decided to ignore is now in the process of coming back to life. It will take some time for it to be back in use but at least the wheels are rolling and things are looking brighter. Going to town council meetings has not been something I have looked forward to until the last few months since we are now seeing signs of renewal in our community. In the past attending the meetings was to see what was going on and voice my opinion when I felt it necessary. After several years of attending the town council meeting it became apparent that our mayor had no use for the open meeting

rules that are supposed to govern public meeting. It is my opinion that the mayor should have been removed from his position long ago by the Attorney General’s office due to his flagrant disregard for the open meeting laws. On the brighter side of things, we do have an election coming up and I certainly hope everyone that is registered to vote will exercise that right. Superior is a special place with special people and we deserve to have someone who has worked for this community and its children for many years. We deserve someone who actually lives in Superior and does not have a record of less than stellar job performance preceding them. /s/ Carl “Bill” VoglerResident of Superior and candidate for Superior Town Council

One of the unique aspects of living in small and rural communities is the friendliness of the people.

Those characteristics often are found in all aspects of the community all the way to business community, where your customers are your family and in many cases the entire family has a role in the success of the business. That is the case for Mid State Pipe and Supply located in Globe, Arizona. Since 1965 the Corso family has owned and operated the company, the company began as the Reyes Pipe and Supply when the Corso family was in partnership with the Reyes family. Eventually the business grew and the Carmen Corso Sr. purchased the business but changed the name to Mid State Pipe and Supply. They came up with the name to indicate that the company was located in the middle of the state and could

serve the entire state if needed. Their primary customers are the mines, municipalities and other businesses who need valves and pipes but they also have a variety of parts, pipes and supplies that homeowners often need, especially those with older homes. They carry the supplies of Dremel tools, Mueller valves, Clay Valves, along with an assortment of cooler supplies and pretty much anything you might need for that plumbing project. As the construction of newer homes become more standardized it is often hard to find parts to make the repairs to older homes. Mid State is your place to find those parts you need, and if they don’t have it, more than likely they can order it. Paul aka (Pauly or Duper) Corso now runs the business full time along with his aunt Danielle Malkovich. The five Corso

In the membership of the Superior Chamber of Commerce is regional radio station KRDE. They are known for their “Country with Personality” mix of

music and most of their listeners enjoy the fact that they focus their air time on music and advertising without a lot of extra talking. The coverage area includes a majority of central Arizona; to the west their coverage area goes to Glendale, to the north all the way to Winslow, east to Alpine and south to Oro Valley. KRDE has one of the largest coverage areas in the state of Arizona and is one of the last few independently owned and operated radio stations. It is also minority owned by Linda Corso and is managed by her niece Mindy. Mindy’s daughter Lindsay also works at the station and does the weather reports and voice overs for the station. When Linda is not at the radio station she is working at Kevlin Steel with her husband Kevin Corso. The station has changed formats in the past 20 years; at first the station was a mix variety station of rock, country and oldies, then it focussed on just new country and evolved to the current format which is both old and new country. They also work closely with many of the local bands and musicians to help promote them on the radio. They have a Fox News broadcast at the top of every hour of the national news. Linda explained that she and her then husband had always wanted to open a radio station and when the FCC

KRDE Radio- Tri Media Inc.

opened a license in Globe they took the opportunity. They have affordable advertising rates for almost every budget for those businesses looking to advertise on the radio and reach a large portion of the state. Linda shared a story about a roofing company in Apache Junction that started advertising on KRDE and within a year they had to expand their operations because their radio ad opened up new business opportunities for them throughout the state. Linda’s advice to future business owners and her fellow entrepreneurs: “Many start ups will fail in the first six months. Make sure you have at least two to three years of expenses put away to cover in emergencies”

The “In Your Biz” column is sponsored weekly by the Superior Chamber of Commerce in an effort to further promote their business members. For months now residents of Superior and the Copper Corridor have been faced with delays and road closures on US 60. There has been some major earth moving going on in the Devil’s Canyon area that has required twice weekly blasting of the area. The project will allow for accelerating lanes to be built through the canyon, which will allow for faster moving traffic to pass if needed. Many drivers have shared stories of seeing this heavy equipment teetering close to the edge and small rocks tumbling down, thankfully the project is moving along safely and efficiently.
