DOPING CONTROL

KONTROLA DOPINGAIn the ninth round six urine samples were takenfor the doping control: four from the men andtwo from the women category. The selection wasmade following a three-phase draw. In the firstphase a pair of national teams was selected, thesecond phase determined the number of thechessboard and the third phase defined the colourof pieces.

In the ninth round the following pairs were se-lected:Men category: pair No. 45: Yemen - Iran, pair No.:41 Albania – Tunis, pair No.: 40 Lebanon – Indone-sia and pair No. 30: Faeroe Islands - Columbia.

Women category: pair No. 9: Byelorussia – Indiaand pair No. 19: Israel – Bangladesh.

In the following rounds a similar draw will takeplace and it will follow the same protocol for sam-ples, with the exception of Sunday when the sam-ples will be taken from a random selection ofmedal winners.

JOURNALIST BLITZTOURNAMENT

On the eve of the rest day a blitz tournament for accred-ited journalists was organised. It was a nice event with56 players, five of whom are well known internationalgrandmasters. After nine rounds of typical blitz tussleswith the rate of play of three minutes plus two bonusseconds for each move, the final standing was:

Na predve~er dneva po~itka je bil organiziranhitropotezni turnir za akreditirane novinarje. Turnir jebil zelo uspe{en, saj se ga je udele‘ilo 56 {ahistov-novinarjev, med katerimi smo lahko na{li tudi petznanih mednarodnih mojstrov. Po devetih krogihtipi~nih hitropoteznih dvobojev, ki so se odigrali popravilu treh minut plus dve dodatni sekundi za vsakopotezo, je bil kon~ni vrstni red slede~:

CHESS IN BARBADOS

Barbados is an island in the Caribbean with prom-ising chess talents.Interview with Kelvin Daniel

The Caribbean is hot and Slovenia is cold. It was a bigdifference coming to a small country, but we find Bledvery beautiful and the people are very friendly. We havebrought warm clothes and are surviving. In the Carib-bean, fish is very popular and the food is good.In Barbados we have a system of three main events atwhich players qualify for the national championship .The top six players from the national championshipqualify for the official events and the champion will playin individual events at the official events.

CoachingWe do not have a permanent coach but when we travel,we have English grandmaster Chris Ward helping usand giving coaching during a Chess Olympiad or anyother important event. The coaches are sent by FIDE andthe British Chess Federation as part of their grant forchess development in Barbados. We have 2 teams here atthe Chess Olympiad and our women’s team is coachedby international master Richard Pert from England

Level of chess in BarbadosWe are a small country of a quarter of a million peopleand we have 1 international master and 3 FIDE mas-ters. We have a 16 year old talented junior, Askari Elson,who is a promising player. We are constantly improvingand this year we conducted a Women’s Zonals. We hopeto conduct International events in the future and wouldlike to emulate the ideal conditions provided by theSlovenian chess federation. This Olympiad is very wellorganized and is among the best Olympiads. We wonagainst the Slovenia B team yesterday by 3 – 1, and theyhave been the best hosts.

Barbados je otok na Karibih z obetajo~imi{ahovskimi talenti.Intervju s Kelvinom Danielom

Na Karibih je toplo in v Sloveniji je mrzlo. Zelodruga~no je bilo priti v majhno dr‘avo, toda Bled je~udovit in ljudje so tu zelo prijazni. S seboj smo prineslitopla obla~ila in nekako bomo pre‘iveli. V Karibih soribe zelo priljubljene, vendar je hrana tudi pri vasizvrstna.

Na Barbadosu imamo sistem treh glavnih prireditev,skozi katere se {ahisti uvrstijo na dr‘avno prvenstvo.Prvih {est igralcev iz dr‘avnega prvenstva se uvrsti nauradna tekmovanja, medtem ko prvak igra v uradnihtekmovanjih za posameznike.

TreningNimamo stalnega trenerja, toda na potovanjih nampomaga angle{ki velemojster Chris Ward, ki nas treniramed {ahovsko olimpijado ali drugimi pomembnimitekmovanji. Trenerje po{iljata FIDE in britanska{ahovska organizacija kot del svoje pomo~i prirazvijanju {aha na Barbadosu. Na tej {ahovski olimpiadiimamo dve ekipi; na{o ‘ensko ekipo treniramednarodni mojster Richard Pert iz Anglije.

Nivo {aha na BarbadosuNa{a dr‘ava je majhna, saj imamo zgolj ~etrt milijonaprebivalcev, med katerimi lahko najdemo enegamednarodnega mojstra in tri FIDE mojstre. Imamonadarjenega 16-letnega {ahista, Askarija Elsona, kiveliko obeta. Nenehno se izbolj{ujemo in letos smogostili ‘enski obmo~ni turnir. Upamo, da bomo vprihodnosti gostili mednarodne prireditve, zelo bi si‘eleli dose~i optimalne pogoje, na podobnem nivoju,kot jih je ponudila slovenska {ahovska organizacija. Taolimpijada je zelo dobro organizirana in je mednajbolj{imi olimpiadami doslej. V~eraj smo premagalislovensko B-reprezentanco 3:1. Moram priznati, da steSlovenci odli~ni doma~ini.

We have 60 chess tournaments in Venezuela, whichspeaks for the popularity of chess in my country. Wehave 15 national chess championships for different ages,from 8 to 20, and that makes a strong foundation forthe development of talented chess juniors.To top that, we have 2 official FIDE Events and theInternational Swiss Open held in different cities,Carcacas, Merida and Bolivan City etc. We are workingon a program of chess in schools and the EducationMinistry has just given its support and consent to intro-ducing it in schools, whereby 40,000 children will befamiliar with the chess curriculum. These children arefrom the first to sixth grade.We have 24 international masters and we are on thelook out for our first grandmaster. We also have 10 FIDEmasters, and the Chess Olympiad in Slovenia has pro-vided the players with a unique opportunity to attemptfor the coveted grandmaster normsBled is a fantastic small town and I can say an idealcentre for chess activity. We have been inspired by thescenic surroundings and the arrangements have beentop order. I have been working in the FIDE commissionfor chess in schools since 1990 and we need to trans-form this commission into a dynamic team and attainour objectives. We need to go to Asia, Africa and LatinAmerica and provide our expertise and help to countriesin introducing chess as a sport for the children of theworld. We need to work with the International OlympicCommittee, and the inclusion of chess in the Olympicswill go a long way in attaining our objective.

Uvencio Blanco, kapetan venezuelskih reprezentanc, jespregovoril o {ahovskih aktivnostih.

V Venezueli imamo {estdeset {ahovskih tekmovanj, karpotrjuje popularnost {aha v na{i dr`avi. Imamo petnajstdr`avnih {ahovskih prvenstev za razli~ne starostneskupine, od 8 do 20 let starosti, in ta so solidna osnovaza razvoj nadarjenih {ahovskih mladincev.Poleg tega imamo {e dve uradni FIDE tekmovanji inmednarodno odprto prvenstvo [vice, ki gostuje vrazli~nih mestih: Carcacas, Merida, Bolivian City, …Delamo na programu {ah v {olah – Ministrstvo za{olstvo nam je dalo podporo in privoljenje za uvajanje{aha v {ole, tako da se bo 40.000 otrok spoznalo s{ahom. To so otroci od prvega do {estega razreda.Trenutno imamo 24 mednarodnih mojstrov inpri~akujemo svojega prvega velemojstra. THE LEGEND OF THE»WISHING BELL«

The best known Bled legend is certainly the legend ofthe sunken bell or the wishing bell on Bled island. Thewishing bell on the island church attracts thousands ofvisitors to Bled each year. The spring and summermonths are particularly colourful, when large numbers ofyoung married couples visit Bled island and ring in theirnew life with the wishing bell. You can reach the islandby a special boat, called a “pletna”, which is made inlocal workshops in the old, traditional way. Motor boatsare not allowed on Lake Bled. In the cold winter monthsof January and February, one can also walk or skate tothe island across the frozen lake.Members of the Society for Underwater Activities and theBled boatmen – “pletnarji” – also revive the legend every25 December, when up to 100 divers submerge in thecold lake and commemorate the wishing bell with aspecial light and sound show.

The legend of the »Wishing bell«

Once upon a time there lived a young widow in thecastle of Bled. Her husband was killed by robbers andhis body was thrown into the lake. She was so inconsol-able that she gathered all her gold and silver and cast abell for the chapel on the island, in memory to herhusband. But the bell didn’t arrive there. The bell, theboat and boatmen sank during a terrible storm. Thedesperate widow sold all her property after this accident.She offered the proceeds for the construction of a newchurch on the island. She left Bled and lived the rest ofher life in Rome as a nun. After her death the Pope hadheard of her misfortune and of her good deeds duringher life as a nun, so in memory to her he decide to makea new bell. He said that anyone that rings the bell threetimes and believes in God, his or her wish would cometrue.Even today sometimes, on a dark night you can hear thesunken bell ringing from the depths of the lake.

Najbolj znana blejska legenda je vsekakor legenda opotopljenem zvonu, o zvon~ku ‘elja z blejskega otoka.Zvon~ek z oto{ke cerkvice privabi na Bled vsako letona tiso~e obiskovalcev. [e posebej pestro je vpomladnih in poletnih mesecih, ko blejski otok obi{~eveliko mladoporo~encev, ki si pred svojo novo‘ivljenjsko potjo pozvonijo {e z zvon~kom ‘elja. Naotok se lahko odpeljete s posebnim ~olnom, “pletnjo”,ki je narejena v doma~ih delavnicah na star,tradicionalen na~in. Motorni ~olni na Blejskem jezeruniso dovoljeni.V mrzlih zimskih mesecih – januarja in februarja – paobiskovalci otok obi{~ejo tudi pe{ ali z drsalkami pozaledenelem jezeru.^lani Dru{tva za podvodne dejavnosti in blejski ~olnarji– pletnarji pa legendo obudijo vsako leto 25. decembra,ko se tudi do 100 potaplja~ev potopi v mrzlo jezero in vposebni predstavi lu~i in glasbe obudi spomin nazvon~ek ‘elja.

Legenda o zvon~ku ‘elja

Tako imenovani »zvon~ek ‘elja« je leta 1534 vlilFranziskusu Patavinus v italijanski Padovi. Nekako vtem ~asu je na blejskem gradu ‘ivela mlada,neutola‘ljiva vdova. Mo‘a so ji ubili razbojniki innjegovo truplo vrgli v jezero. Zbrala je vse svoje srebroin zlato ter dala vliti zvon~ek za kapelo na otoku.Vendar tja ni prispel. Hud vihar ga je potopil z ladjicoin ~olnarji vred. Kdor s tem zvonompozvoni in svojo ‘eljo sporo~i usmiljeni »gospe z jezera«se mu ‘elja izpolni.V temni no~i je tudi dandanes iz globin jezera mo~sli{ati potopljeni zvon.

ANECDOTES FROMTHE WORLD OF CHESS

At a tournament some time ago, Korchnoi was pittedagainst an African team member who had a very poorcommand of chess skills.He soon had a winning position, but his opponentpersevered with the game in a completely hopelessposition....The following dialogue soon developed:Korchnoi: ’Do you speak English?’Opponent: ’Yes.’Korchnoi: ’Why don’t you resign!?’

At the Chess Olympiad in Havana in1966, the Sovietgrandmasters played a number of simultaneous games.The revolutionary Che Guevara was one of the partici-pants at Viktor Korchnoi’s simultaneous games. Anofficial came up to Korchnoi and said to him: ’CheGuevara loves to play chess, but he’s a pretty bad player.He’d be unimaginably happy if he were to draw withyou.’ Korchnoi nodded his head in understanding.Later, in the hotel, Talj asked him how the simultaneousgames had gone. ’I beat them all,’ he answered. ’EvenChe Guevara?’ ’Him, too, unfortunately he hadn’t theslightest idea how to play against the Catalonian.’

When 83-year old grandmaster Mizes defeated Dutchmaster Van Forest (85 years old) at a tournament in1950, he told journalists. ’Quite simply, youth won!’And opposite cases can be found.At a tournament in Petrograd in 1914, at the end of agame of two veterans (72-year old Blekburn and 60-year old Gunsberg) the former, cheerful in victory, saysto the latter: ’You’re still too young to play with me!’

In 1967, a grand tournament was organised in MonteCarlo. They sent an invitation to the American ChessFederation for the participation of two grandmasters,with the note that one of them must be Bobby Fischer.What happened at the tournament was never madepublic.The organisers didn’t want to wash their dirty linen inpublic ... but their next invitation read: ’We invite twoAmerican grandmasters to our tournament – on condi-tion that neither of them is Robert Fischer!’

Kor~noj se je na nekem turnirju v davni preteklostisre~al z afri{kim predstavnikom, ki je zelo slaboobvladal ve{~ino {ahovske igre.Kmalu je imel dobljeno pozicijo, vendar pa je njegovnasprotnik kljub popolnoma izgubljenem polo‚ajuvztrajno nadaljeval z igro.Kmalu se je razvil naslednji dialog:Kor~noj: »Do you speak English?«Nasprotnik: »Yes.«Kor~noj: » Why do you not resign!?«

Na {ahovski olimpijadi v Havani leta 1966 so sovjetskivelemojstri odigrali ve~ simultank. Na simultankiViktorja Kor~noja je bil med udele‘enci tudirevolucionar Che Guevara.
