The Map. The Idea.

The original walk.

On the 22nd August 2016, I went for what turned out to be a marvellous, 19km stroll through the streets of Munich. It was splendid. I was armed with some snacks, a ‘Field Notes’ note pad and a nice pen. I didn’t know where I was going to end up – my final destination was a mystery. All I knew was that I was going to take 90 turns and mark these turns as waypoints.

My walk – your walk.

Here’s the idea: I’d like you to take the same walk but in your part of the world; take the turns I took, turn left, turn right and make wildcard decisions of your own (more about them later).

The 90 waypoint walk is an experiment: I’d like you to use the 90 waypoint map to explore your city, town, village and arrive at your own final photo finish. One map and a million different stories.

How to use the map.

Instructions

1. Print out the 90 waypoint map.

2. Start anywhere you want.

3. Follow the turns on the map when you reach a junction.

4. You have 10 wildcards. If you reach a junction and the street doesn’t tickle your fancy then you can use a wildcard. Just carry on walking until you find a street that appeals to you and then make your turn. Wildcards add to the adventure.

5. Tick of the waypoints. Make notes, take photographs and explore your city. Let people know you’re on the walk by using the #90waypoint hashtag on Twitter or Instagram.

6. The final waypoint is a turn right. Congratulations, you’ve arrived! Where the devil are you? Explore this waypoint and document your destination with a photograph.

7. Send me the photograph and an account of your magnificent walk.

Do This Stuff

• Do enjoy the walk. Don’t rush it - just take your time.

• Let someone know that you’re going on the walk. Better still, take someone with you.

• Stay alert. Be conscious of the people, cyclists and traffic around you.

• Take photographs, make some notes and really get into the adventure of (re)discovering where you are.

• Take breaks every so often. Sip on a cool drink, enjoy a snack or a meal. Enjoy the day.

Don't Do This Stuff

• Don’t go anywhere where you feel unsafe. If you’re concerned about your safety, then stop the walk immediately.

• Don’t trespass and don’t break the law. You must stay on streets or pathways that are open to the public and pedestrians.

Preparing your walk.

Snacks, water and equipment.

You’re not climbing Everest nor about to start an expedition to the North Pole but you are stepping out on a journey that can take a couple of hours. You don’t really know how long your going to be out there so you’ll need to pack a few things into a bag and take them with you.

1. You’ll be burning carbs so take some snacks with you: apples, muesli bars or sandwiches.

2. You’ll be sweating so take something to drink with you: water and juices.

3. Make sure that your mobile phone is charged. You may need to check your location on a map and take photographs with your phone. I take a couple of external power packs with me.

4. Pack a note book and have a pen. You’ll find that your mind will wander – you’ll have ideas so make sure you can write them down.

5. Got a camera? Take it with you for those extra special shots.

tracking your walk.

Steps and Kilometres.

Tracking your journey, the steps and time you’ve taken and the kilometres you’ve covered isn’t compulsory. But it would be really helpful to get this information from you – so that we can share this with with other 90 waypoint walkers. It may also surprise you how far you’ve walked.

Here are some ways to track your walk

1. Use a GPS device. I have a Garmin etrex touch 35. You may have something similar.

2. Fitness trackers from companies such as Withings or Jawbone track times, steps and distances.

3. You can install apps such as “walkmeter” onto your mobile phone and record your expedition.

Your photo finish.

The final photograph

You’ve walked your walk, used up your 10 wildcards and passed through all 90 waypoints and reached your final destination. Adventure completed. Well done! The journey is over. Please take a photograph of what you can see and record this historic moment.

#90waypointMy photo finish

19 kilometres, 90 waypoints and 5 hours later – I ended up here at the Nymphenburg Palace in Munich.

Feedback and documentation.

Feedback.

I’d love to hear about your walk: how it felt, what you encountered – the sounds, smells and the people your saw. We’ve taken the same turns and passed through the same waypoints, you and I but each journey was fundamentally different. I find that incredibly exciting. Please let me know what you experienced.

Documentation.

1. Send me your photo finish. You’ll get full credit, of course!

2. I’ll be documenting all of the walks on www.marcusjohnhenrybrown.com.

3. Use the #90waypoint hashtag when you’re out on the walk.
