Frosting Fairness, Finally!Dr. Alissa CransLoyola Marymount UniversityMany of us are familiar with how to slice a cake ensuringequal sized slices for all. But what about those of uswho want an equal amount of frosting as well?! Thisquestion is a classic with the problem solvers amongstus. In 1975, Martin Gardner considered a square cakecut into 7 pieces in his Scientific American column. Morethan a decade earlier, H.S.M. Coxeter posed the problemfor a square cake sliced into 9 pieces as an exercise inhis book, Introduction to Geometry. Together, we will

solve this problem for a square cake cut into 5 pieces, and investigate the other cakeshapes for which the same procedure will produce slices with equal cake and frosting.

We determine an analytic solution for theprobability density for the distribution of distances between points chosenfrom each sphere.

2210 Viscous Gravity Current Flow in Confined ChannelsAngel Umana, George Mason UniversityViscous gravity currents characterize a large class of fluids. One regime forthese fluids is in the case of a channel confining the fluid flow. In this project,a model is developed for such fluids. This model allows us to study di↵erentchannel geometries. Numerical solutions are explored for di↵erent geometries.

2208 Classification of (0, 2) LG Field Theories with C < 3Sean Gholson, James Madison UniversityOur research classifies the possible forms of super-potential for 2-dimensionalLandau-Ginzburg field theories with a (0,2) super-symmetry and a centralcharge less than three. We have done this by applying constraints from (0,2)theories to non-singular, quasi-homogeneous ideals with two variables and twogenerators.

In this presentation, we explore packings of three circles oftwo radius classes onto a square flat torus. Using pictures, we introduce basicconcepts, illustrate maximally dense arrangements, and outline the proofs ofoptimality.

2210 Modeling a Chaotic BilliardRandy Shoemaker, James Madison UniversityA Bunimovich stadium billiard is a chaotic dynamical system. In this talk wediscuss the di�culties in creating a computer model of this system due to finiteprecision. We examine how its chaotic nature can aide in computing the imageof a set of close trajectories and how this can simplify the modeling process.

We explore the generalization of oneof these ancient theorems from Euclidean geometry into both spherical andhyperbolic geometries.

2208 Visualizing Cubic Moduli SpacesAjeet Gary, University of Maryland College ParkSL(2, C) character varieties allow us to represent hyperbolic metrics ontopological surfaces on two generators as certain cubic surfaces. We investigatedynamics and ergodicity on these surfaces, as well as their other geometricproperties.

2210 Predicting Olympic Medal CountsEmmy Yarmy, University of LynchburgWe used variables unrelated to athletic ability (GDP per capita in US dollars,a dummy variable measuring whether or not the country has a socialist history,and the latitude of the countries capital city) to predict medal counts inthe Summer and Winter Olympics using a zero-inflated negative binomialregression.

These self-convolutions arise fromcertain planar rooted forests, which generalize planar rooted trees. We thendemonstrate a bijection between the generalized action graphs and the planerrooted forests.

2204 Invariants of Curves with the Fels-Olver Moving FrameJordan Berkompas, Longwood UniversityIn this talk we will show how to use the Fels-Olver method of moving framesto investigate the geometry of curves in the Lorentz-Minkowski plane andin a companion three-dimensional geometry. We will demonstrate how togenerate di↵erential invariants for curves based only on the transformations ofthe geometry.

2208 The Hausdor↵ dimension of the limit set of a pair ofpantsIan Hill, James Madison UniversityGiven a 3-holed sphere, there is a natural way to cut the surface so that itbecomes an octagon that sits in hyperbolic space. From these ”cuts” we maydefine functions that act on the space and we may consider the limit set ofthese functions. Its Hausdor↵ measure is in general unknown and is the subjectof the talk.

2210 Assessing the Descriptive Epidemiology of Clubfoot inIowaSiri Neerchal, University of Maryland College ParkClubfoot, a common birth defect, has unknown causes. We examine trendsin prevalence, estimate associations with child and parental characteristics,and identify geographic hotspots in the state of Iowa using logistic regression,spline models, and multilevel Poisson analyses (through a Bayesian approach),respectively.

CSI: Count on Statistics forInvestigationDr. Kimberly SellersGeorgetown UniversityDiscrete data (particularly counts) introduce anadded layer of complexity to any sort of statisticalanalysis. While the Poisson distribution isoftentimesa firstchoice to describe and/or modelsuch data, constraining qualities can limit itsuse. This talk will introduce alternative models,particularly one with which I have worked heavilyto advance the field of discrete or count datamodeling.
