V.E. Day

A diary entry (recount) written from somebody

who has just experienced V.E.

Day.

English WritingToday, we are going to plan some of

our writing for the week ahead.

Task 1

Before watching the videos, create a mind map of everything you already

know about V.E. day.

English WritingWatch the video.

Year 5 Timetable Week Beginning Monday 4th May

By the end of the week you will

complete at least 1 and a half A4

pages of writing from a character’s point of view that experienced V.E.

Day.

Purpose: to share your thoughts and feelings about V.E. day, and to

recount your day. It should express your

hopes, happiness and relief.

Audience: no intended audience apart from

the writer.

Style: diary entry: first person written from a

chosen in present

Think about: When it was? What it was celebrating? How did people

celebrate? Who was involved?

Using a different colour add extra notes and facts that you’ve

remembered or learnt through watching the videos.

Upload an image of your finished mind map or use the drawing tool

on Seesaw.

Task 2You are going to prepare your writing by thinking about the

following questions in relation to your character:

How old are you? Where in London do you live?

What has life been like for the past 6 years?

What family members have been off fighting in the war?

Have you returned from the country as an evacuee?

Now that food will not be rationed, what are you looking forward to

eating?

Audience: no intended audience apart from the writer.

Style: first person written in present and past tense. Informal. Thoughts

and feelings.

Today, you are going to write the first part of your diary entry: half a

page. You are focussing on your introductory paragraph (which you

always find in a diary) and then your second paragraph should focus on

the morning of V.E. Day.

Include the following: How you woke up?

What you ate for breakfast? What you wore?

Where you went? Who you met? What you saw?

What you heard? How were people celebrating in the

morning?

Use implied emotion (see not tell) and 5 senses.

You should only write up to lunch time. Don’t mention

seeing the Royal Family yet.

Challenge: You may want to write it as a surprise for your character (they may not have

listened to the wireless the night before).

Audience: no intended audience apart from the writer.

Style: first person written in present and past tense. Informal. Thoughts

and feelings.

Today, you are going to write the second part of your diary entry: half

a page. You are writing about the afternoon celebrations and going

down the Mall to Buckingham Palace to see the Royal Family.

Remember to describe all the people around you. Your diary should flow from the previous

lesson.

You should only write what happened in the afternoon (2

paragraphs)

Vocab‘The Blitz’, rations, evacuee,

wireless, Hitler, blackout, Nazi Germany, ‘The Front’, soldiers, Union flags

King George VI, Queen Elizabeth (the king’s wife),

Princess Elizabeth (our current queen), Princess Margaret,

The Mall, Buckingham Palace, Balcony, Winston Churchill, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Nelson’s Common

Audience: no intended audience apart from the writer.

Style: first person written in present and past tense. Informal. Thoughts

and feelings.

Today, you are going to write the third and final part of your diary

entry: half a page. You are focussing on the evening celebrations and a final paragraph that sums up your

thought and feelings and talk about the future (2 paragraphs).

Vocab

‘The Blitz’, rations, evacuee, wireless, Hitler, blackout, Nazi

Germany, ‘The Front’, soldiers, Union flags

King George VI, Queen Elizabeth (the king’s wife),

Princess Elizabeth (our current queen), Princess Margaret,

The Mall, Buckingham Palace, Balcony, Winston Churchill

Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Nelson’s Common

Modelled As the sky started to darken, the

celebrations got even louder. Hand in hand, Nancy and I walked through

Year 5 Timetable Week Beginning Monday 4th May(introduction) and past

tense. Informal. Thoughts and feelings.

Success Criteria• Has an

introduction to set the scene and create atmosphere.

• Use ambitious vocab to explain what has happened.

• Is written as if talking to someone (using an informal tone).

• Uses some personal pronouns: I, we, my, me.

• Talks about feelings, reactions and opinions from the writer's point of view.

• Uses time conjunctions to show when things happened.

• Add 2 of your own targets for success to the criteria.

Task 2 does not need to be uploaded to Seesaw.

If you are finding it difficult: pick a child character of a

similar age. This will help you think from their perspective.

Vocab‘The Blitz’, rations, evacuee, wireless, Winston Churchill,

Hitler, King George VI, blackout, Nazi Germany, ‘The Front’, soldiers, Union flags

Modelled Dear Diary, I can’t believe what has happened! Nazi Germany has surrendered! Ever since I heard the news on the wireless radio last night, I haven’t been able to contain the grin on my face. We finally did it! We’re finally free! We WON!

This morning, I woke up to the sound of sweet and gentle singing. It’s been a long time since I heard my mum sing, but there was no mistaking it: it was her voice. However, there was something in the air more beautiful than my mum’s voice: food! I quickly got dressed in my Sunday outfit and made my way to the kitchen. Sizzling in the pan was bacon and eggs! I sat down quickly at the kitchen table excited that we were having such a delicious breakfast after years of rationing. Nancy was already there at the table her eyes wide. She won’t have even remembered the last time we had this for breakfast! Finally it was time to eat. I was allowed one rasher of bacon and two eggs. My stomach didn’t know what had hit it!

Modelled Everywhere I looked out of the bus window, people were smiling from ear to ear. Music was playing from

every window and crowds of people were celebrating. The bus had to

stop at least six times because people kept on getting in the way, but I didn’t care. It allowed me to

look at all the people celebrating in the streets. Everywhere I looked, I could see white, red and blue. The colours of our flag! The colours of

our celebration!

When Nancy and I finally arrived at Trafalgar Square, my eyes grew to

twice their size in amazement; I couldn’t believe what we were

seeing! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people in one space in all my

life! Everyone was having a jolly good time! Soldiers, men, woman and

children were dancing and hugging. Some people were climbing on top of

the four fountains, as policeman watched them laughing.

the crowds with mum, who still lined the Mall trying to get another

glimpse of his Highness. We had to weave through people dancing in the

street as the sounds of cheers continued to deafen me. But I didn’t care! Life was good. The world was

at peace.

minutes of independent reading.

Select an activity to complete every day:

1. Select 2 characters from your book and compare them. Think about their personality, appearance and behaviour. 2. Pick 2 characters you like, write a short letter from one to the other. 3. Describe a setting from your book using 3 different senses.4. What genre is your book (comedy, thriller, action…)? Use examples from the text to prove your point5. Pick a character form the book, design 3 questions you’d ask that character and answer them from their perspective. 6. Find 3 really interesting short and simple sentences in your book. What made them interesting? 7. Pick a character from your book who is not the main character. Think of the last even that happened and describe it from their perspective. 8. Design a different ending to the story9. Pick a paragraph and try to edit it using more ambitious vocabulary and year 5 writing techniques

Afternoons:During the afternoons you should complete a range of activities linked to other curriculum subjects. This week we have assigned1 R.E. task1 History task1 Science taskThese will also be set on Seesaw. For the remaining time select your own activities and learning based on your own interests and trying to include a range of subjects.

History – British Values: This week we would like the children to think about VE day, which is celebrated on the 8th of May. A lot of photographs showing significant events from the original VE day and celebrations have been documented by the Imperial War Museum. You can see some at these 2 locations:

Activity:

An important part of winning the war was the fact the Allied Forces were able to talk in secret. Morse code helped with that. Use this website to help you find out: https://kids.kiddle.co/Morse_code

1. What is Morse code? 2. How can we read Morse code?

Year 5 Timetable Week Beginning Monday 4th May3. Why is it called Morse code? 4. How did we send messages in Morse code?

Here is the alphabet in Morse code, create your own secret message to send! Write out your message then replace all the letters with the correct dots and dashes. Put a short pause between each letter and a long pause between each word.

Try answer the secret code below:

R.E.RE Lesson: 3 Week No: 2 Topic: TransformationTitle: On the Road to Emmaus.

After the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, the disciples were unsure and uncertain of what happened until they had met with Jesus. He helped them to understand all the events that had taken place.

The following story from Luke explains it to us:

On the Sunday evening two disciples were on their way to Emmaus, a village seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking about everything that had happened and did not recognise the stranger who joined them as they walked along.

“What are you talking about so sadly?” he asked them.

They turned to him, their faces full of their sadness. The disciple named Cleopas answered him. “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who does not know all the things that have been going on these last few days?”

“What things?” Jesus asked.

“What happened to Jesus of Nazareth,” they said, “the great prophet who showed by all he did and said that he was sent by God. Our chief priests and leaders handed him over to the Romans and he was crucified. We had hoped that he was the Promised One who would set Israel free. This morning, some women went to the tomb where he had been buried and came back saying they had seen a vision of angels and that Jesus was alive. Some of our friends went to the tomb and found it empty as the women had said, but they didn’t see anything of Jesus.”

Jesus said to them, “How slow you are to believe! Don’t you remember the promises of the prophets about the Christ who would suffer and rise to new life?” Then Jesus started with Moses and went through all the Scriptures explaining the message about himself.

By now they were near to Emmaus, and they begged him to stay with them. So he did and they sat down at table together. He took the bread, blessed it and broke it and gave it

Page 6: 9:00-10:00  · Web viewBy now they were near to Emmaus, and they begged him to stay with them. So he did and they sat down at table together. He took the bread, blessed it and broke

Year 5 Timetable Week Beginning Monday 4th Mayto them. Suddenly, as if their eyes had just opened, they recognised him; but even as they did, he vanished.

“How could we not have known!” they exclaimed. “Weren’t our hearts burning as he talked to us and explained the Scriptures to us?”

At once they set out and returned to Jerusalem. When they arrived, the Eleven and the other disciples said, “Yes, it’s true! He has appeared to Simon!” and then they told their story and how they had recognised him when he blessed and broke the bread.

Task: Design a storyboard to show what happened on the Road to Emmaus. Your captions/speech bubbles must show how the Holy Spirit had changed their belief.

ScienceLiving things and their habitats: lesson 2

Watch this video of a flower: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=493WeySyf-8If you have a plant at home with a flower, ask permission if you are allowed to dissect it with an adults help and see these different parts for yourself. To the right is a diagram of a flower. Use the video to help label the different parts.

Answer these questions: 1) What is the nectar in a plant used for? 2) What part of the flower shows the insects where to go?3) The sepal is not used in pollination, what role do you think it has for the flower? 4) Why does a plant need to grow a flower?

The flower is a vital part of a plant that allows it to reproduce by producing pollen. Plants can’t move like we do, so how do they spread their pollen to other plants? Write down as many ways you can think of.

Plants that produce pollen can be classified in 2 groups: Insect pollinators and wind pollinators. Use the internet to research why these plants are different.

Look at the image below, some of these plants are insect pollinators and some are wind pollinators. Label each plant as an insect or wind pollinator
