Recommended Practices For Industrial Vacuuming?Most Contractors Combine High-Volume Air Moving with Waterjetting;Synergy Between Both May Lead to Enhanced Training Opportunities

is well-served by recommendedpractices administered by theWaterJet Technology Association(WJTA), no similar standards exist forthe industrial vacuuming that usuallyaccompanies waterjet work.

The result is that contractors whoutilize industrial vacuuming mustdevelop their own training and safetyprotocols, or simply train their staff asbest they can and let the chips fallwhere they may.

Either way isn’t an optimumsolution, say industry veterans.

“Most industrial contractors serveclients with both product lines,” saidGary Toothe, C.E.T., training managerof Thompson Industrial Services, Inc.,Sumter, S.C., and a member of theWaterJet Technology AssociationSafety Committee. “They have high-pressure water cleaning as well ashigh-air-volume industrial vacuuming,and on a lot of jobs, one supports theother. In my 21 years of experience incontracting, very few companies haveone product line without the other.”

That is, Toothe said, high-pressurewater jetting contractors will havehigh-volume vacuum equipment tosupport waste removal, or industrialvacuum contractors will have high-pressure water cleaners to break upmaterial prior to vacuuming.Therefore, there is a close synergybetween both families of equipment.

Yet no standardized training orsafety recommended practices existthat could be utilized by industrialvacuuming contractors, as exist forwater jetting. At this time WJTAoffers recommended practices for

Close synergy between jetting,vacuum

The synergy is so close that somecombination sewer units are forms ofhigh-pressure water jetting andindustrial vacuuming in one unit,Toothe said. “People who are doingpipeline cleaning, for example, willhave need for a set of standards forboth,” he said.

“In the majority of job sites, thewaterjet and vacuum equipment isworking side-by-side,” said KenCarroll, WJTA association manager.“If a particular contractor doesn’thave his own equipment, he will leasethe equipment or hire an outsidecontractor to do the work. We arefinding that there are more and moreservice contractors that have vacuumtrucks as part of their equipment line.”

While these contractors may lackrecommended practices for high-volume vacuum equipment, he said,WJTA may be in a position to fill thatgap. “We are trying to find out whatWJTA can do for them,” Carroll said.“We want to determine if they feelthere is a gap that the association maybe able to fill. And that’s up to them tosay.”

Some manufacturers, such asGuzzler Manufacturing, Inc., asubsidiary of Federal SignalCorporation, conduct safety trainingsessions for customers.

ay Leno, recognizingthe value of the

waterjet process forquickly cutting a widerange of materials, hasinstalled waterjet cuttingequipment which usespressure equipment fromKMT Waterjet. TheKMT Waterjet “extremepressure system”,delivering waterpressurized to 60,000pounds per square inch,was chosen based oncompany responsiveness,machine reliability and on being anAmerica-made product.

Whenwaterjetting is used to clean, a vacuumis needed to remove the wasteresidue. But right now there is nothingto inform industrial vacuumcontractors of safety recommendedpractices or OSHA requirements, thirdparty evaluation of equipment, or anyother information exchange.”

Some clients — such as petroleumrefining via the American PetroleumInstitute — do dictate certainrequirements to contractors, he said.“But if you go into cement, or steel, orpulp and paper industries, therequirements can be very vague,”Fuller said. “It might be as simple as‘do the job, and don’t get hurt’.”

Contractor-created guidelines

“Regarding a document or guide asto what’s acceptable, or in definingcertain practices as good or bad —which is what WJTA did forwaterblasting — nobody has done thatfor industrial vacuuming,” Toothe said.

Toothe should know: A CertifiedEnvironmental Safety and HealthTrainer by the National EnvironmentalSafety & Health Training Association,he developed a comprehensive trainingprogram for Thompson Industrial thatis among the best in the business.

Trainees are put through a day ofOSHA training, followed by a series oftwo-day classes, including Tech SkillsI and II, Operator Skills, Crew LeaderSkills, and Superintendent Skills.Refresher courses and skilled job classtraining enable field technicians to riseto operator status, and later crewleadership roles involving supervisionand customer contact.

work site requirements, andemployees are familiarized with acustomer’s potential layout andmaterials hazards. “We have acomputerized database in the dispatchoffice and hard copies in my office ofall the work we’ve ever performed,”Toothe said.

Safe work rules are extended to thejob site. The firm does a hazardanalysis before each job, looking forelectrical lines and hazards to passers-by. Employees know that conditionschange throughout the day, and must

Considerable savings possible

It goes without saying that acontractor utilizing industrialvacuuming could achieve considerablesavings, while attaining a high level ofcompetency, if he or she were able toaccess prepared safety or trainingbest-practice standards. By adoptinggeneric, common terminology andpersonnel classifications, standardscould be made available to theindustry. But at this time, they simplyare not available.

Training would include safety, butalso could include troubleshooting, fieldmaintenance, and effective cleaningtechniques.


“Right now, OSHA doesn’t have anyregulations to cover high-pressurewater cleaning or high-volumeindustrial vacuuming,” Toothe said.“The only safety regulations arecustomer-developed, manufacturer-developed, or in our case, contractor-developed. We developed ourwaterblast policy based on the WJTA,but our industrial vacuum policy wascreated by us with some input fromthe truck manufacturers. The problemis, most of the manufacturer materialare disclaimers: ‘don’t do this, don’t dothat’. They are aimed more atprotecting themselves from productliability, than instructing usersproactively how they can use theproduct safely and efficiently.”

“For most of the contractors wedeal with, if they have waterjetequipment, they will have vacuum

equipment,” Fuller said.“Recommended best practices arevery closely geared toward safety, andvacuum truck contractors withoutstandardized, recommended bestpractices could benefit from guidelinessuch as making sure no power linesare overhead, having the proper jobset-up, keeping hoses as straight aspossible, always using a safety cage toprotect hands, the use of relief valves,grounding the truck and staticdischarge, and operation of the truckat the optimum RPMs for the materialand distance they are conveying.”

training recommendations for users ofhigh-volume vacuum equipment.

“The WJTA wrote therecommended practices forwaterjetting, and I think they are theproper forum to write therecommendations for industrialvacuuming,” Toothe said. “Thereseems to be some interest towards thisin the portion of WJTA that iscontract-oriented. I feel the WJTAwould be a good means to create a setof recommended practices forindustrial vacuuming.”

The synergy of equipment use andmutual clientele might lead waterjetand vacuuming contractors to thesame source for recommended bestpractices, Federal Signal’s Fuller said.“They serve the same master,” he

said. “Since both sectors are soclosely tied, it makes sense that bothwould be well-served by the kind ofbest-practice information exchangethat WJTA can provide.”

Service contractors may have safetyprograms that are structured to theirindividual needs and equipment,WJTA’s Carroll said. “Some havesimple safety programs, some havemiddle-of-the-road programs, andsome have advanced ones,” he said.“For the most part there verydefinitely is a commitment to safety,but it differs according to the needs ofthe contractor. Some vacuumcontractors may already have safetypractices that may be incorporatedinto recommended practices that mightbe developed by WJTA in the coming

years. If that’s the case, othercontractors will have benefited fromthe exchange of ideas that a nationalassociation can facilitate.”

Association-sponsored vehicles forthis educational interchange wouldinclude WJTA’s Jet News newsletter,programs at conferences, and otherwritten material, Carroll said. “As theorganization evolves, and as needscome up, the WJTA will respond tothe needs of its members,” he said.

Furthermore, providing industrialvacuum best-practice training alsomight bring more contractors to theWJTA, Toothe said. “Contractorsneed to be part of the WJTA,” hesaid. “The Waterblast Boot Camp at

And if you’re going todraw contractors, in excess of 90percent of contractors with awaterblaster are going to have, or rent,some form of industrial vacuum tosupport their high-pressure watercleaning. It makes sense to me that ifwaterblast is your target audience,WJTA should go ahead and cover theother half of it too, because nobodyelse is currently.”

In industrial vacuums, Toothedifferentiates pure vacuum trucks,with rotary vane pumps that create avacuum in the vessel — such as areused by septic cleaners — fromindustrial high-volume air movers usingpositive displacement blowers.

“The latter are moving very highvolumes of air at very high inches of


mercury,” Toothe said. “A lot ofpeople call them ‘air movers’ ratherthan ‘vacuums’, and I think the WJTAneeds to reach out to the industrial airmover segment of the market, 1500cfm or greater. With the sewer andporta-potty people, the dangers are notcaused by the strength of theequipment, but from the hazards offalling into the septic tank, forexample. The WJTA needs to developrecommended practices for industrialair movers, not forthe septic trucks, thesame way it hasrecommendedpractices forindustrial waterblasters, but notpressure washers.”

Toothe said theSafety Committee, asit solicits input for

updating current waterblast practices,might ask the same stakeholders whattheir interest level might be in havingan international standard for the airmoving industry.

“If there’s sufficient interest, then Ithink the Safety Committee mightconsider working on a draft documentto have available for delegates at thenext conference in 2007 in Houston,”Toothe said.

Traditionally, conventional diamondsaws or carbide-tipped routers havebeen used to singulate flash memorycards. However they are limited tocutting straight lines. Other shortcom-ings with these traditional methodsinclude less productivity with lowerCpks*, higher maintenance require-ments and higher cost of ownershipthan waterjet singulation systems.
